Q: How broken is Okami?

A: So broken this disk here...

feels better about itself now

It's not a bad game but the controls just destroy everything.

The brush and the Wiimote sounds like a great idea until you use it. The strokes have to be in the exact spot to make any of the slashes work and just to be fun it doesn't recognize half of them.

There's one part when you have to help this guy Susan by slashing things. Only problem is that the game doesn't pick up on all the slashes so he has to do the ENTIRE thing over again, not bad until you find out you can't skip the scene that comes before it. So you're stuck watching the scene every single time before you actually get a chance to slash again.

It's not like it doesn't pick up on the slashes and you don't see it on the screen either. You SEE the slashes go right across what you're supposed to be slashing but nothing happens.

Capcom really screwed over Wii owners on this one. Instead of improving on a last gen game they had their 6th tier team port over a broken game.

If you play the game plan on redoing a lot of the actions even though you did them right the first,. second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth.......times

Great job highlighting one bad aspect about the game, and not talking about any of the good.

Interesting. This is the first negative feedback I've even heard about this game. I guess I can judge for myself when my copy comes in today.

Wow. First the motion controls are fickle and work only half of the time (like Boxing, or Rayman) but now devs can't even get the IR part right? Mind you the IR has worked great since release and beyond... It seems like devs are getting worse with the new controller rather than better. I guess we will all be using the GC controller soon enough, or move on...

No, not really. I've only ran into one instance where I had to repeat the motions a few extra times to finish the task. It was at the very beginning of the game, when you have to make the first tree bloom while Mr. Orange does his dance.

I'm more than halfway through the game now and haven't experienced a single other problem like that one.

No, that's a faulty analogy. In your original post, you highlighted something that happens once or twice in a 30 hour game. Why not talk about what happens in the other 29.9 hours instead? Seems like a better way to showcase what this game is all about to me.

No, in my first post I gave an example of how it's broken.

I could go on to say that the combat isn't as responsive as it was last gen because of the waggle or the slowdown the game has whenever there's too many enemies on the screen or when the lighting effects wash over the screen or that the game looks worse now because without that paper filter everything is crisp now in a way that was never intended.

The game has a lot wrong with it but for 29.99 I thought it was going to be worth it. Now because of the aggravation factor I've been dealing with of having to replay sections of the game because IT'S broken, yeah. That took it down to a game that's worth 19.99 (if you don't mind redoing parts even though you're doing it correctly the first time)

This title is shovelware, a shovelware game that you can have some fun with but also a shovelware game that you're fighting the controls in every single meaningful part of the game.

Blog it?

Still won't be affecting my decision on getting the game. I want it for the environment, dungeons, and story. This blemish will eventually be forgiven in my book.

Do you perchance have Parkinson's? Drawing can be hard with that affliction.

j/k

I had little to NO trouble with the game. Sure, the strokes would OCCASIONALLY not register for me, but it was rare. The big thing that helped was realizing that you were supposed to draw straight lines with the Z button instead of A.

Great game. Worked nearly perfect for me.

I noticed no slowdown.

I encountered a few of the problems you mentioned, but they didn't really bother me much. I mean the celestial brush is only a small porition of the game..and for the most part it's been working.

Also, saying that Ready At Dawn is a 6th tier Capcom team is incorrect, Its a team contracted by Capcom for this job and previously they've done Daxter and God of War for PSP. Very talented company if you ask me.

This thread is pathetic. I know that you havent played the game since everyone who has done it knows that there isnt a problem with slashes since you hold the Z button to make them steady. This thread needs to get locked.

Slash worked probably 95% of the time with the Z button.

The only stroke that was difficult overall was Cherry Bomb

EDIT: Using the Z button for Watersprout works wonders too. Just have to start the stroke in the proper place.

The original game was pretty picky about position too, but I can see how someone who didn't plunk 25 hours into that version wouldn't recoginize what to do.

I still haven't touched Okami Wii (trust me, its not the only game still in shrinkwrap in my room) but I imagine this is due to the old models having a new paint job. If the enemies and items weren't drawn to scale, then you would have to unintuitively slash something in an area you wouldn't suspect. I remember doing that a few times (like drum men and some light poles), but for the most part it works just as imagined.

The only thing I can add is that video game logic is not always your logic, but if Capcom used people with no logic, don't try to rationalize the illogical. Every other CAPCOM outing has been excellent, so if one ends up less than perfect we should yell at the team and not the company.

This seems to be a pretty common complaint among reviews, but the general consensus is that it does destroy the game. Try the PS2 version.

give it some time Jayson. You'll get used to the strokes and how they must be done. it really depends on the speed and length of your stroke otherwise the game will confuse it with another ability. (why does my post sound so wrong...)

The PS2 version had the same problem too on that part. I had to do it several times before blooming the flower that was giving me the problem. It drove me crazy to the point I almost quit the game. Couldn't skip the cut scene and had listen to it over...and over...and over again.=S To jayson: the PS2 had similar problems recognizing straight lines if they weren't on a flat enough horizontal plane. I'm not surprised you are running into similar problems on the Wii version.

Yeah, I think the fact that you HAVE to watch the cutscene over and over if you screw up annoyed me more than missing the ques. It wouldn't have been so frustrating if you could just get right back to doing the brush strokes. Whoever thinks unskippable cutscenes are a "good idea" needs slapped. Hard!

But, I really don't have a problem with the controls for either version of the game. I like the Wii version better because the IR controls much faster than an analog stick.

it looks like i'm the only one here who prefers using A instead of Z for a straight line. I hate using Z actually. Also, Z just makes me commit more mistakes instead of helping me. The angle of the line is always wrong when i use Z. As most people have said, i've grown accustomed to the controls and it perfectly works fine. Still, i commit mistakes and that the game will not pick up my stroke but it occurs lesser times now.

anyway, the game is epic. just finished it the other day.

I'm back

Ok, I hate the Z button lol

It feels too restrictive

My problem isn't the straight lines, I'm great at that/those. My problem seems to be a combination of speed (that I'm about done with) and then starting the line in the right area.

Now I'm learning to adapt but here's the thing. I played the last gen version in my Best Buy twice on two different visits.

You ask why that's important?

It's important because in two sessions of play that lasted about 20-30 mins total I NEVER had the slashing problems with the last gen version. The Wii version that I have in my house on my TV is less user friendly by a mile.

I stand there and the trees throw the fruit and I slash with the A button and I see the slash go right across the fruit and I still get hit. Then I do it all over again with the Z button and the same scenario unfolds.

It takes practice, sad thing is I'll be halfway through the game once I get it all down.

I'll update this through my adventures with the title lol

that sounds similar to some probs i had with the PS2 version when i played it briefly. eg the bit where ure going down the river on the log and u need to draw lines from the riverbank to the log to stop it from going over a waterfall. it took me AGES to get that right on the PS2.

sometimes it also wouldnt pick up on something because i was too far away from it.

im not sure if its better or worse on wii (its not out in europe yet on wii) but the game was certainly not perfect on the PS2 either in that regard. still a brilliant game from what ive played of it though.

Capcom really screwed over Wii owners on this one. Instead of improving on a last gen game they had their 6th tier team port over a broken game.

If you play the game plan on redoing a lot of the actions even though you did them right the first,. second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth.......times

Jaysonguy

They didn't port over a broken game, but if what your saying is true and I have heard there are some minor flaws in some of the controls and other parts. That would mean they broke the game while porting it.

The game can't be half as bad as that guy named Susan.

Yeah, i hear you. The controls are a bit frustrating in parts. I am having extreme trouble slashing at the fruit throwing trees. It seems simple enough, but it just does not work for me, 9 times out of 10.

I don't know what your talking about. I think the controls are great. Of course if Nintendo made it it would be another story with you.Lunar52

Exactly. If it were developed by Nintendo, Jaysonguy would say: "Nintendo has done it again! Another masterpiece! I love you Nintendo!" But since Capcom developed it we hear: "The game is broken! It's shovelware crap!"

The reality of the situation is that this game is the 5th highest rated Wii game on Game Rankings.

If Nintendo made it there wouldn't be this problem.
