I got a used Nintendo DS but the touch screen wont work. I was wondering if i need to be able to use the touch screen for all games and if i need to get it repaired. Can i play most of the games for ds without using it at all?

No. Most DS games will require you to use the touch screen.

You should get it repaired if possible or otherwise you'll be stuck with playing GBA games and the few DS that don't require you to use the touch screen.

I suggest getting it repaired, but in the meantime; mario kart and animal crossing don't need touch screen controls...

Non-stylus-requiring games that come to mind:

Nanostray 2

Bangai-O Spirits (but you won't be able to use the level editor)

N+ (again, no level editor for you)

Metal Slug 7

Ketsui: Death Label

Izuna

Izuna 2

Disgaea DS

Chrono Trigger DS

FF4 DS

Geometry Wars Galaxies

...but yeah, get that fixed, brah.

N64 with 2 screens

But if that were the case, the DS would have three or four noteworthy games, like the N64. At least the DS has an actual library that doesn't consist of just Mario Zelda Mario Mario Zelda Mario Mario Mario Starfox Mario.

castlevania? the newest one.EuroMafia

This is true until you unlock Albus Mode, where the touch screen is used to teleport around on-screen, and necessary to get past certain areas.

I've seen replacement touchscreens online. If i buy one is it possible to fix on my own or is it a hard thing to fix? I'm asking these questions because i got my ds from a friend for free and theres no serial number on the back so i don't think i can send it in for repair.

Most of the games on the DS use the touch screen. Though, there are a lot of games that don't use it as well, such as the ones that were mentioned by other users.
