Playing Zelda 3D: Am I just bad, or am I trying to do stuff too early?

So I have been playing this game for a few hours now, and I have to say that I am hooked. Not only has the game itself hooked me, but it also has me hooked on the system, as I see this now as a portal console somewhere between a gamecube and a wii, unlike the NDS which was lacking in real hardware power. I can't wait to get some of the other awesome software titles!

However, as I play Zelda, I have trouble figuring out if I am really bad at the game, or just trying to do things before I have the ability to do them. For instance, I just got to the Gorgon (probably spelling that wrong, but it's the rock eater guys on Death Mountain), and I have found that up to this point there has been a ton of stuff I have tried to do, but failed horribly. Here are just a few things:

1) Solve the Lost Forest puzzle

2) Try to catch all the chickens for that woman in the village at the bottom of the mountain

3) Try to solve the music puzzle with the giant rotating platform in the village at the bottom

And all three of those times, I may have done a little bit in the way of progress, but I was ultimately thwarted. So here is my question: Is there stuff that I should skip over with the intent to come back later to complete? Because I just don't know what I am doing wrong lol. Also, as a random side question, do you play as kid link the whole game, because I got the impressive you also got to play him as an adult. No spoiler information, just a simple answer will suffice... Thanks guys, still an amazing game that I have to force myself to put down

Don't worry, there are many things that you can only partially complete or can't touch until later in the game (the things you mentioned included). Yes, you play as adult link at some point.

Zelda games are full of those. Get used to moving on and keeping your eye open for the tool/hint that you need to finish a particular task.

I don't like using walkthroughs... I feel like it spoils the game, and usually I just piece it together myself. But with this game, I was hitting so many dead ends I just had to be sure

try playing the songs you have learned at certain areas and to certain people to get to the next part of death mountain (thats all i will say, took me a while and i had played 2/3 of the game back on the n64).

First of all out of the 3 things you listed, you can do 1 of them at the point you are at now. The other 2 things need to be done later on.You will come accross a lot of things in the game that you will need to come back later on to do.

alrighty then... I guess now I just have to figure out which one it is (though I have a feeling its the chicken collecting, since the other ones seem to require items that I don't have yet)... it's really cool and interesting to think of how much this world has to offer... I just have to remember to come back here when I have those items later on!

I found the big troll guy behind the wall you unlock with Zelda's Lullaby, but he keeps insisting he doesn't want my help fixing his problems... so I guess I am going to backtrack and try to go all the way up the mountain and see where that gets me...

I don't either, but with this game it was a must. There's so many little things that you have to do to trigger the solution to the puzzle that I found myself very frustrated until I started using a guide. Kind of like the things you're talking about now. You really don't know if you can complete certain tasks except through trial and error. Im having fun with the game but really can't believe so many people proclaimed it as the best game of all time. This is the only game I can ever remember using a guide for most of the time. At the first hint that I'm stuck I pull up a walk through and I've found the game much more fun.

I'll see if the difficulty prevails as I get further in the game, and if it does maybe I'll use a free online guide... but I would never buy one

You don't need to use a walkthrough, if you get stuck and do need help you can use one of the sheikah stones in the game (the stones with an eye that light up and have a hole at the base, there is 1 outside Links house).

Nah, I only used a guide once for the game (the original game on the 64), and that was IMO justifiable, as the way to reach a certain ledge didnt make sense and it was kinda glitchy in how he got up to it. So the way i was approaching the jump was wrong :P.

The Goron guy is in a bad mood. A tune might ease him up. Also you can glide around when jumping off a ledge holding a chicken. You'll need to do that.

you can always come back later, so if you think you're unprepared, just move on.
