Figures I start having problems when Super Mario Galaxy is released...

I'm having some serious issues aiming at the upper left of the screen. No matter what angle I aim the Wiimote at, how a straighten the sensor bar, and how dark I have the room at, its like the top left won't recieve the signal well or at all.I even covered up the little red light on my TV, thinking it might have been interfering, but alas I still have problems. Could the sensor bar be damaged? I'd rather not have to get a new sensor bar.

If you have a digital camera, take a pic of the sensor bar. Im not kidding here. Look at the pic and see if you can see two lights on both ends of the bar. Digital cams will pick up the IR. If you dont have 4 IR leds, that would be your problem.

EDIT: The Wii has to be on, naturally

Also, do you have more than one controller? If so, are they both/all acting up?

Only one controller.

I tried a new wireless bar, same thing.

Tried on different TVs, same thing.

I tested the range around the TV with the little sensor SMG has. It vibrates when you go out of range so I tested it. It went a little bit outside the screen to the left, right and below, which is perfectly fine. But it barely makes it to the top of the screen before it cuts out.

It's bothering the hell out of me, and I can't find a solution. I've moved the bar around, moved it WAY far down, and I still had the EXACT same result, which makes no sense to me. I'm starting to think it's a problem with the remote itself, but I don't have 50 bucks I can throw down just to find out. My remote might have a problem aiming higher, which seriously hampers my ability to fully enjoy SMG. But I don't understand how it could have happened...

*cries*

Umm, one thing you could try (if you haven't already) is switching the sensor bar's from above/below your TV to the opposite position (both physically and in the Wii settings). Then see what (if any) effect this has.

I tried it and had the same result. I had little to no range at the top of the TV, and a TON below. I was pointing it WAY below the TV before it registered as out of range, but barely made it to the top. It's making alot of things in SMG hard to do, and very annoying to try.

*SPOILER for early in the game*

The Galaxy where you fling Mario from those sticky things is difficult when the sticky things are near the corner. (How desriptive of me...)

*END SPOILER*

Yeah, I'm angry.

Don't be angry. I'm having the exact same problem and I was searching on Google to see if other people were having this problem. I think it's a problem with the game. Also, I JUST ordered a new sensor bar and have been using it for a few weeks because my old one was damaged. It is a sensor bar directly from Nintendo, also.

Notice how when you press the home button, you can go into that far left corner, but ONLY in SMG it can't seem to pick up a signal...(perhaps it's a error in-game where that part of the screen was considered cut-off for the star cursor to go). So, yeah, I basically think it's the game. It is really annoying though, because once I died because I didn't grab a blue star thingie to drag me into a bubble because it was too off-screen. :/

Also, the cut-off seems to be going in an upward slant like so: / (not so dramatic, but you get the idea)

Edit:: I emailed Nintendo saying this:

"Hello, I've just bought Super Mario Galaxy and there is a strange sensor bar problem within the game. I just bought a new sensor bar from Nintendo.com, so I know there is nothing wrong with the sensor bar itself. The problem is, when I play Super Mario Galaxy, there is a strange cut-off in the top left corner of the screen. In that corner, if the cursor is pointed there, it fails to recognize it and the cursor disappears. This isn't a sensor bar problem, or a Wii remote problem, as others are having this problem as well. This can be frustrating at times and I was wondering if it will be corrected in a firmware update or something else. Also, when I go to the Wii menu or the Home menu (while playing Galaxy) the cursor can move anywhere I point to, but when I return to play Galaxy it has the problem. Thanks."

I'll let you know what they say back.

I kind of have it figured out now. When I tilt my Wiimote to the left, it starts to cut in and out in that corner (Bottom right now, with sensor bar on top), but when it's tilted to the right it works fine.

Bah, it's always something...

I read your posts and decided that was exactly what was happening to me. I had just changed the batteries though and decided to swap the dying ones back in to see if that made a difference. Now I'm playing with near-dead batteries but my cursor isn't disappearing.

The ones I was replacing with were poor-quality rechargables, I'm not sure if that was a factor or not. I am going to invest in some good rechargables now though.

I have the same proplem.. except its now a year later..

But, maybe you should send your Wiimote back for a new one, as it sounds like that is the problem. Or, if there is a lot of light in the room, that can be affecting it. (Eg. Your tv is next to a window.)

Hi, I live in Italy and I'm using the Pal version of the game.

I'm just having the same problem, it isn't too annoying, but it is.

I use a Philips 14', a classic CRT...... coul be a problem linked to the type of Tv??

If I go back to the main menu of the Wii the problem disappear, it's clearly a thing linked to the game.

Tell me what do you think and excuse me for my poor english!!!

Try replacing your sensor bar with another source of infrared. Try placing two candles where you sensor bar should be. If it works, your sensor bar is damaged, and if it doesn't it is probably the game.

No, is not a problem of the sensor bar...... as I said if I go back to the main menu of the wii the problem goes away.......

and I think is a bug ot the game, because many found the same problem....

I forgot to say that I use an original RGB scart cable from Nintendo, and i adjusted the position of the screen (in the wii menu) with a +8 to let the image perfectly fit in the Tv....

Could be a glitch that comes out with a particular mix of tv, cable, screen position and distance from the TV????

thanks

Any news on this?

Anyways guys, I JUST managed to get a wii (they're impossible to find here in Southern Cali), and bought SMG right away. I've been playing this game at a friend's house and it brought back memories of SM64 so I had to get it. Anyways I was searching the internet because I'm having the exact same problem and found this thread.

Just like you guys, the top left corner of the screen doesn't register. If I put the sensor bar on the top of the TV, the bottom right corner doesn't register, just like one poster mentioned. Also, this only happens in SMG - in the Wii menu screen the pointer works fine in all corners.

Here's the interesting part, this only happens when I'm holding the Wii remote at a natural angle in my right hand. If I hold the Wii remote face up (perfectly horizontal), then I can point in all corners, and if I hold the Wii remote at a 90 degree angle (perfectly vertical, with the A button facing the wall), then again I can point perfectly in all corners. It's only when I hold the Wii remote at a natural angle (between the two horizontal and vertical planes) that the top left corner won't register in SMG.

To sum up, the top left corner doesn't register when the sensor bar is below the TV, the bottom right corner doesn't register when the sensor bar is on top of the TV. All corners register fine if I use the Wii remote at a perfectly horizontal or perfectly vertical angle, but when using the Wii remote at a natural angle, this problem occurs. The remote works perfectly fine in the Wii menu at ANY angle, it's only in SMG that I have this problem. Finally, my friend doesn't have this problem, SMG works perfect at his house at ANY angle.

This is why I believe it's a software issue, so I'm returning my copy of SMG in exchange for another. I'll let you guys know if that works. However, I've also got an old CRT 27 inch TV, and my friend has a flat screen, So I'm wondering if the TV could be the problem. I can't test on a flat screen since I don't have one, but again, the Wii remote works fine in the menu, so I can't see how it could be the TV.

Hope that all makes sense and I hope this thread isn't dead, if so, I'll start a new one and try to get some answers. Did anyone get this issue resolved and if so, how?

Good luck and please let me know if you can help in any way, it's so annoying that I can play it fine at a friend's house but my own wont' work properly.
