Just got my Nintendo Power in the mail! Here's what they had to say:
First of all, they had nothing but praise for the wonderful character animations, responsive controls, and the fact that it remains a hardcore gamer's game, despite its casual appeal. They also had screenshots of two new characters (well, old characters) Piston Honda and Great Tiger! They also applauded "Title Defense Mode" which is unlocked after you beat the game. It's basically the whole game all over again, except all the characters have new moves, and are therefore much more difficult. All the unlockables and challenges to complete in exhibition mode add a lot of replayability.
So why did it get marked down? For all the reasons you probably expected. They said they weren't quite sold on the Multiplayer, which is fun but not nearly as satisfying as the Single-Player modes. They also said that the balance-board controls aren't nearly responsive enough for the faster paced, more difficult fights. And, of course, there's only one new character, so although the fighters have different moves from the last time around it's all a bit familiar.
Seems fair enough for me. I personally didn't give a flying crap about the multiplayer (although I was hoping balance board controls would be better) and I'm perfectly fine with an old-school character roster. Can't wait!
