That random old guy in the promo was that Hipster's grandfather.
Though it sounds better because I think they will include a friend request system with the Wii U.
They said so? Since he read the user name on the board before he video called him like he'd never heard the user name before I took it as he didn't know him. He called him "grandpa" in the video but I took that as him just saying the dude was old. That random old guy in the promo was that Hipster's grandfather.

I honestly think people complain more about the friend codes than is neccessary. Giving someone your Livetag or Psn name isnt that simple either if you got a complicated nickname with a lot of symbols n stuff. Also choosing a nickname I wanna keep is alot of pressure for me. Its really just the overall online system that was the problem with the Wii, rather than the friend codes. I think this Miiverse look like a pretty aswesome turn around though, so i dont care if it got friend tags.

Yeah, but at least if you play a game with that person on Live or PSN, you can send them a friend request without entering that person's 'complicated' name. There are certain Wii games that allow you to send a friend request in the same manner as Live or PSN. Nonetheless, this new system of friending people doesn't sound that bad for the Wii U.
I think this is just fake. Nintendo said that friend codes are gone completely.
Take a look at this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_Network
Dude, really? Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America confirmed this in an interview to Kotaku, one of the bigger gaming sites. This is 100% official. You're saying a Wikipedia listing that can be changed by anyone is better? Just come to grips with this news. It really doesn't sound that bad. It just sounds like Friend Codes allow you to do one or two extra communication features with friends or something like thatI think this is just fake. Well get use to it. The 3DS has one universal friend code so everyone should've seen this coming. I know I did. But to be fair, they could be much less restrictive than FCs have been in the past. Honestly the difference between 6-12 digits and 6-12 letters isn't that big to me so long as there is just one for my device. And to clarify once again, this isn't fake at all.[QUOTE="TyberZannxxxx"][QUOTE="bonesawisready5"] Dude, really? OK let me ask you this. If Nintendo was requiring people to know each other to add each other, then what difference would having a gametag make? The scenario would be exactly the same, you would have to know someone to add them. Having a name doesn't indicate how the system works.Again, people still have to know each other to add each other. TyberZannxxxx
Expected. As long as it's as simple as with 3DS, I can have no problem with this.linkyshinksIt needs to be more simple than the 3DS. They need to get rid of the whole having to add each other separately thing and then it will be fine. If I add you, then a message should be sent to you saying that I want to do so, instead of having to contact you through another site. I mean with that whole Miiverse thing, I would assume that's the way its going to work. Whether they had names or numbers is irrelevant, its simple a matter if they can take that one last step to streamline the process.

1. There is a name associated with a friend code.
2. You have to tell someone BOTH your name AND your friend code.
3. You need to ask the other person for BOTH his/her name AND his/her friend code.
In short, you can only add someone you actually know. And both people must do this to add each other. With a Gamertag, you can just look up the Gamertag, send the request, and wait for the request to be accepted with the press of a single button. We should just make a petition for Nintendo to get rid of Friend Codes entirely and just use a Gamertag. Anybody willing to make a petition?

For what? There are two other systems with an 'easier' way of adding people. If you don't like it, then stick with those systems. But it seems like you like Nintendo, so you may end up getting a Wii U with or without friend codes.

Friend Codes makes it too hard and inconvenient for me to add friends. Unless Nintendo uses Gamertags, I won't add anybody to my friends list. Now are we going to make a petition or not?

The article doesn't state that you need to know someone else's FC in order to add them. It only says there will be a different level of interaction, between those who you add randomly and those you actually 'know'. So you will still be able to play with random people you don't know and add them. The real question will be what can you do with someone that you 'know' versus someone that you don't. I really don't care as long as I can play with them and add them to my list.

I'm thinking maybe video chat will be limited to people you know (understandable if you have ever played Uno on 360). Messages left by people you know will probably also take priority over those left by randoms.OK let me ask you this. On the 3DS you need only know the friend code. The name automatically comes up even if you enter it wrong once they add you.If the system uses FC's, you don't need anyone's name. You just need the code, that's it. The inconvenient part of the 3DS is if I want to add someone from GS, I have to contact them on GS to exchange codes. If they get rid of that, then there is no issue. Sepewrath
Exactly. Especially if someone has already gone through the 'trouble' of putting his/her Friend Code out there for people to see, all that needs to take place is some sort of confirmation process whenever that user has been added by someone else. It's basically the same result as exchanging codes, but can take place with fewer steps.
Between this and the ability to add players met online to some extent, the whole process has become more rounded.
I would, but requesting achievements is stupid and pointless. Also, it's dumb to call them gamertags instead of usernames like every other service does, except Xbox Live.http://www.change.org/petitions/nintendo-add-gamertags-and-achievements-to-nintendo-network

I think you'll have a code attached to your account but when you see people you'll see their username and you can find people via usernames. I guess kinda like Battle.net.HaziqonfireThat would be great. As much as I love the 3DS the friend code system is kinda annoying. Not nearly as bad as the Wii, but still....

So you don't have to both exchange Friendcodes to add somebody.

I think the best thing to do is have different layers of interaction.
You should be able to see and play with anyone online and maybe give mii emoticons, text, or doodle (though texts and doodles would be moded).
If you have made a frined with someone through a request you can chat in game.
If you exchange codes and both type them in, then you can chat at any time and vidoe chat at any time.

Yeah, but the Wii wasn't released with online gaming in mind. Wii U won't make that same mistake (hopefully) Also, handhelds aren't really for serious online gaming. This is how their online system should work:
Bob has just finished playing team death match with a nice group of people, Bob decides he should send them friend requests.
Bob just got some helpful advice from someone playing the same game as him on Miiverse, Bob decides he should send them a friend request.
Bob just had a great conversation with StarBlazer64 on a random online message board, Bob decides to add his 12 digit friend code. A friend request is then sent to StarBlazer64 as a notification where he can simply accept or decilne the friend request.
That's the only major thing I feel is missing right now. I don't have a problem using one universal code, if that means I can have whatever username I want.
That's actually pretty much what Miiverse is now.I think the best thing to do is have different layers of interaction.

n-Space says that "Nintendo is fully embracing connectivity".
"Question: What do you like most like about the Nintendo 3DS?
Tim Schwalk: I love that Nintendo is fully embracing connectivity. It's so easy to jump into an online game and not only play with your friends, but chat with them as well. In Heroes of Ruin, you can even play games with "strangers", complete with voice chat if the parental settings on your console allow it. There are no difficult hoops to jump through or crazy restrictions. Nintendo did an outstanding job with the 3DS, and Heroes of Ruin is going to be THE game to get to show off the connectivity options of the system."

That's the only thing I like about Friend codes is I can choose any username I want and I don't have to worry about someone else having it.This is how their online system should work:

I just want a friend request option. I also want it to have atleast 12 characters because I want to use my Steam and PSN username for Wii U and that is 12 characters longs. With the 3DS I have to cut off the 17 in my username since 3DS only allows 10 characters.
