Reggie Fils-Aime confirmed to Kotaku what was reported by an David Gibson earlier in the week on Twitter that the Wii U will use friend codes in some way. Though it doesn't sound so bad. But yes there will be both personal accounts and friend codes. Y'know I do hate to say I told you so guys in this scenario. But it doesn't sound THAT bad. [QUOTE="Kotaku"] First the bad news maybe. Nintendo has not chucked the idea of requiring people to have friend codes, which, on the Wii, were 16-digit codes that people had to exchange before being linked as friends on the system. And now the better news "There are friend codes, but it's not the existing friend code system," Fils-Aime said. "What do I mean by that? Here's what I mean: you will be able to identify people as friends and have a certain level of interaction vs. a different level of interaction for the more general population. The method by which you identify someone as a friend is a lot simpler than what's happening today with Friend Codes." (He declined to lay out the new Wii U friend code program just yet.) The problem I believe people had with the Wii version, I told Fils-Aime, is that adults who owned the system felt like, hey, if I'm an adult, treat me like an adult and let me friend people I've met online without having to call a person and exchange a code or something like that. "Agreed," Fils-Aime said. "You feel like those people will be happier?" I asked. "Yes, they will be."

Check out the full story at Kotaku It doesn't sound that bad. Sounds like if you know your cousin on Nintendo Network you can add a code (hopefully like 4-5 digits) that allows more in depth conversation. Not like you need to know the code to play together online. And to be fair that Mii-verse promo they showed did have that Hipster calling a random old guy so that would indicate video calling isn't something friend codes are required for.

That random old guy in the promo was that Hipster's grandfather.

Though it sounds better because I think they will include a friend request system with the Wii U.

They said so? Since he read the user name on the board before he video called him like he'd never heard the user name before I took it as he didn't know him. He called him "grandpa" in the video but I took that as him just saying the dude was old.

I honestly think people complain more about the friend codes than is neccessary. Giving someone your Livetag or Psn name isnt that simple either if you got a complicated nickname with a lot of symbols n stuff. Also choosing a nickname I wanna keep is alot of pressure for me. Its really just the overall online system that was the problem with the Wii, rather than the friend codes. I think this Miiverse look like a pretty aswesome turn around though, so i dont care if it got friend tags.

That's quite vague, hard to tell if this is good or bad news.

Nintendo_Ownes7
IIRC, the guy wasn't comfortable calling the elderly man grandpa.

Yeah, but at least if you play a game with that person on Live or PSN, you can send them a friend request without entering that person's 'complicated' name. There are certain Wii games that allow you to send a friend request in the same manner as Live or PSN. Nonetheless, this new system of friending people doesn't sound that bad for the Wii U.

I think this is just fake. Nintendo said that friend codes are gone completely.

Dude, really? Reggie Fils-Aime, the president of Nintendo of America confirmed this in an interview to Kotaku, one of the bigger gaming sites. This is 100% official. You're saying a Wikipedia listing that can be changed by anyone is better? Just come to grips with this news. It really doesn't sound that bad. It just sounds like Friend Codes allow you to do one or two extra communication features with friends or something like that

Well get use to it. The 3DS has one universal friend code so everyone should've seen this coming. I know I did. But to be fair, they could be much less restrictive than FCs have been in the past. Honestly the difference between 6-12 digits and 6-12 letters isn't that big to me so long as there is just one for my device. And to clarify once again, this isn't fake at all.

Expected. As long as it's as simple as with 3DS, I can have no problem with this.

OK let me ask you this. If Nintendo was requiring people to know each other to add each other, then what difference would having a gametag make? The scenario would be exactly the same, you would have to know someone to add them. Having a name doesn't indicate how the system works.

It needs to be more simple than the 3DS. They need to get rid of the whole having to add each other separately thing and then it will be fine. If I add you, then a message should be sent to you saying that I want to do so, instead of having to contact you through another site. I mean with that whole Miiverse thing, I would assume that's the way its going to work. Whether they had names or numbers is irrelevant, its simple a matter if they can take that one last step to streamline the process.

1. There is a name associated with a friend code.

2. You have to tell someone BOTH your name AND your friend code.

3. You need to ask the other person for BOTH his/her name AND his/her friend code.

In short, you can only add someone you actually know. And both people must do this to add each other. With a Gamertag, you can just look up the Gamertag, send the request, and wait for the request to be accepted with the press of a single button. We should just make a petition for Nintendo to get rid of Friend Codes entirely and just use a Gamertag. Anybody willing to make a petition?

For what? There are two other systems with an 'easier' way of adding people. If you don't like it, then stick with those systems. But it seems like you like Nintendo, so you may end up getting a Wii U with or without friend codes.

lol are you doing that purpose? What you said made no sense of any kind, not at all. If Nintendo was using the same system as they used on the 3DS, then whether they had a name or number, you would still have to contact people to add them. If they used a system where you could just add people by sending them a note, then that could also happen, whether they had a name or a code. Its not exactly rocket science.

Friend Codes makes it too hard and inconvenient for me to add friends. Unless Nintendo uses Gamertags, I won't add anybody to my friends list. Now are we going to make a petition or not?

If the system uses FC's, you don't need anyone's name. You just need the code, that's it. The inconvenient part of the 3DS is if I want to add someone from GS, I have to contact them on GS to exchange codes. If they get rid of that, then there is no issue.

The article doesn't state that you need to know someone else's FC in order to add them. It only says there will be a different level of interaction, between those who you add randomly and those you actually 'know'. So you will still be able to play with random people you don't know and add them. The real question will be what can you do with someone that you 'know' versus someone that you don't. I really don't care as long as I can play with them and add them to my list.

I'm thinking maybe video chat will be limited to people you know (understandable if you have ever played Uno on 360). Messages left by people you know will probably also take priority over those left by randoms.

On the 3DS you need only know the friend code. The name automatically comes up even if you enter it wrong once they add you.

Exactly. Especially if someone has already gone through the 'trouble' of putting his/her Friend Code out there for people to see, all that needs to take place is some sort of confirmation process whenever that user has been added by someone else. It's basically the same result as exchanging codes, but can take place with fewer steps.

Between this and the ability to add players met online to some extent, the whole process has become more rounded.

I would, but requesting achievements is stupid and pointless. Also, it's dumb to call them gamertags instead of usernames like every other service does, except Xbox Live.

I think you'll have a code attached to your account but when you see people you'll see their username and you can find people via usernames. I guess kinda like Battle.net.

I think Nintendo willhave it so you can send a friend request to somebody if you played against them aswell. So you don't have to both exchange Friendcodes to add somebody.

I agree. They need to go!

Michael0134567

I agree too. But the proposed set up for Wii U is tolerable (if I'm interpreting the article correctly).

It does sound better, but why do we need still need them?Doesn't Nintendo want to attract the "hardcore" crowd?

YEAH I KNOW MAN GAMERTAGS ARE WAY MORE HARDCORE THAN FRIEND CODES!! SICK BRO!! *eyeroll.gif*

They do somewhat. But Nintendo knows they will make money off the Wii U anyway.

Of course they will, but who wants friend codes?

More like usernames are way better. Only Xbox Live calls its usernames "gamertags" which sounds incredibly stupid.

I think the best thing to do is have different layers of interaction.

You should be able to see and play with anyone online and maybe give mii emoticons, text, or doodle (though texts and doodles would be moded).

If you have made a frined with someone through a request you can chat in game.

If you exchange codes and both type them in, then you can chat at any time and vidoe chat at any time.

Why do we need friend codes?Just remove them.

Michael0134567

They're an extra layer to insure that you are communicating only with people you know in real life.

I see no problem with communicating with strangers online.Would be useful in games where you need teamwork.

I'm not saying I completely agree with it, that's just nintendo's reasoning. I can understand why they wouldn't want minors communicating with adult strangers though.

I'm ok with only being able to chat with people I really know. I don't want to listen to the crap you have to listen to on XBL.

I highly doubt it will be that way in-game. VOIP better be for the whole team and not just friends, or else it kinda defeats the purpose.

We haven't seen nintendo allow it yet on any platform. Not on the wii, DS, or even the 3DS. So....

Yeah, but the Wii wasn't released with online gaming in mind. Wii U won't make that same mistake (hopefully) Also, handhelds aren't really for serious online gaming.

This is how their online system should work:

Bob has just finished playing team death match with a nice group of people, Bob decides he should send them friend requests.

Bob just got some helpful advice from someone playing the same game as him on Miiverse, Bob decides he should send them a friend request.

Bob just had a great conversation with StarBlazer64 on a random online message board, Bob decides to add his 12 digit friend code. A friend request is then sent to StarBlazer64 as a notification where he can simply accept or decilne the friend request.

That's the only major thing I feel is missing right now. I don't have a problem using one universal code, if that means I can have whatever username I want.

I think the best thing to do is have different layers of interaction.

That's actually pretty much what Miiverse is now.

Heroes of Ruin (an upcoming 3DS game) allows players to chat with anyone, as long as the parental settings allow it.

n-Space says that "Nintendo is fully embracing connectivity".

"Question: What do you like most like about the Nintendo 3DS?

Tim Schwalk: I love that Nintendo is fully embracing connectivity. It's so easy to jump into an online game and not only play with your friends, but chat with them as well. In Heroes of Ruin, you can even play games with "strangers", complete with voice chat if the parental settings on your console allow it. There are no difficult hoops to jump through or crazy restrictions. Nintendo did an outstanding job with the 3DS, and Heroes of Ruin is going to be THE game to get to show off the connectivity options of the system."

That's the only thing I like about Friend codes is I can choose any username I want and I don't have to worry about someone else having it.

I just want a friend request option. I also want it to have atleast 12 characters because I want to use my Steam and PSN username for Wii U and that is 12 characters longs. With the 3DS I have to cut off the 17 in my username since 3DS only allows 10 characters.
