This is a quote from IGN's article (good read, I recommend it all) found here: http://wii.ign.com/articles/790/790916p1.html

"Let me assure you that our third party partners will also meet the needs of both audiences. As you know, third party development is moving enthusiastically to the Wii because of the innovation and because of the potential return on investment. And despite what you might have heard, to date in the US third parties have sold more Wii games than Nintendo has, and this includes all the success we've had with Zelda and Wii play."

When Reggie says "both audiences," he means core and casual gamers. So, supposedly third party support will increase, although he's been saying that for a long time. And, saying that third party titles have sold more than Nintendo games isn't saying much - Nintendo hasn't made many first party games yet, so there's not much to compete against.

What do you guys think will happen? Will third party support be the Wii's best friend, or the Gamecube all over again? I hope the third party support will in fact get better, but only time will tell.

(I'm not flaming on Nintendo or anything, I know it's very early in the console's life... I just want to know your reactions on this quote and article.)

Third party developers go where the money is. Right now, the Wii is the soup du jour, so while everyone was iffy before launch, some honest to god decent 3rd party games will be coming down the pike. EA, Capcom, THQ, Ubisoft. Those guys like money. The more money they see the Wii making, the more games you'll see coming. The last thing Nintendo has to prove is competent online support, and the IGN UK review of MSC seems to say that they're taking well placed steps in the right direction. With online play, more game possibilities open up, as more chances for money do. 3rd party will become a non-issue in a short amount of time, I can George Zimmerman guarantee that.

Reggie wasn't president of Nintendo of America when the Gamecube came out, so it's not like he promises it again. Third-party is slow for the Wii because nobody expected it to do so well, except the Japanese developers. Ubisoft is the first non-Japanese game company that is delivering alot of games.

All that I know is third-party support will be greater on Wii than it ever will be on Gamecube.

It takes a year or more to make a decent game (cuz there are tons of 3rd party games out for Wii, but since they suck nobody counts them), 08 will have a ton of 3rd party support.

Remember what happened with DS? 3rd parties bet the on the wrong horse and PSP had a much stronger 06 in terms of 3rd parties... now all the sudden, everybodies rushing right back to DS.

Third-party developers cannot ignore installed base, and the Wii is already rushing to the lead, so I expect Reggie's claims to be true.  If the xbox360 has sold 10.8 million consoles to date (according to http://nexgenwars.com/ ) in the 19 months it has been on the market, and the wii has sold 7.1 million in 7 months, this seems to be the likely conclusion to me.

As a "core" gamer, I was skeptical of Nintendo's appeals to the casual crowd, but I can't argue with results.  While the core gamers often pick between the other two systems, both the core and the casual seem to be buying the wii.

That said, I'm probably going to get a 360 at some point, when the hardware problems get fixed up a bit.

I count the games that you claim are insignificant.  Don't make such broad, baseless statements.

DQ: Swords, Rygar Wii, No More Heroes, and DBZ tenkaichi 3 sounds like some nice 3rd party stuff.

If he says so, it's true. The way the Wii is selling, Nintendo doesn't need to rely on false promises to guarantee attention from gamers. And with games like NiGHTS, FF:CC, No More Heroes, Project Rygar, and many untitled projects besides Nintendo own games, I guess software for the core gamer can only get better.

Me as well, although I will add "Super Paper Mario" to that list, and Trauma Center with the third party list.

Still, I know that Nintendo will get a ton of third party games since it's so popular, but the question is, will these games be any good? Just because the DS has a lot of third party support doesn't mean all the games are very good. There are some great ones... but it's a small amount compared to the numbers released.

I just hope the third party companies actually spend some time to work on games instead of just rushing out movie games and things like that.

So...any idea if No More Heroes is coming out this year? It's easily one of my most anticipated 3rd Party games :) I absolutely loved Killer 7. I even bought Contact on the DS :P

It will take at least a year before we see anything really new from new 3rd party developers who only started programming in january once they saw how the Wii was selling.  I'd say this time next year, there will be word of many on the way.
