Accroding to Miyamoto that may be a possibility.

As you know, we have already collaborated with Retro for the Metroid Prime series in the past. And I think when we talk about any other franchise, Zelda might be a possible franchise for that collaboration

I am not sure if this would turn out brilliant, or a disaster. Honestly, given their latest 2 games (since one or two of the lead devs from prime 1 and 2 is/are gone), I am not so sure it would turn out good. Well it would turn out good, but lets just say that DKCR and MP3 are not the masterpieces that MP1 and MP2 are. Or DKC2, DKC3, OoT and MM are for that matter. If Zelda gets more linear I will freak out.

Retro + Nintendo to make Wii-U Zeldas.

Nintendo + Capcom to make 3DS Zeldas.

Nintendo + Grezzo to bring us more ports to both platforms! :D (Remastered TP and SS in HD on Wii-U please.)

Oh sorry, I was merely dreaming there for a moment.

I hope not. I'm not a fan of anything they've made yet, and I would rather they not touch Zelda since they take so long to make.

i think they might let them develop a zelda on the 3ds. nintendo wouldnt let them take on a big cosole release like SS from the start.

if it happens im sure the game will be awesome

I don't think Retro could make a Zelda game themselves. But I would love to see Nintendo give them a role in the game, such as saying make us a Death Mountain or Zora's Domain

Prime 3 was good and DKCR was pretty good too, but Prime 1 and 2 really are on a whole different level IMO. As for Nintendo not letting Zelda get screwed up, after SS I am a bit worried. Hear me out! lol I love SS and I am not saying they screwed Zelda up with it, I am saying if they went further with the condensing and linearizing they did in SS, it could quite possibly get ruined (for me). I HATED the multiple linear planets in Prime 3 and Hunters. I much prefer the worlds of Prime 1 and 2. If the last game Retro developed was Prime 2, I would be jumping up and down at the chance of them helping with Zelda. I do still have hope (definitely) that they could do an awesome job though, I am just a tad skeptical.

I don't know. Does the current Zelda Team really need another developer to step in and make a new Death Mountain? I'm not saying there would be anything wrong with it, but there isn't anything wrong with it as is either. I' d prefer if Retro worked on games that needed their expertise. Zelda is already in good hands.

I think a colobation throughout the whole effort is the best way to go. I think Retro alone might get too far away from the Zelda feel in areas. If they work together though I think they will really bring something to the table.

lol i see what your saying, i have to agree.

my opinions on what SS did for the zelda series was it introduced alot of game mechanics that have potential for making the ultimate zelda game. but ya they should REALLY consider removing some of the linearity. linearity is good as far as story development goes, but too much of it would be bad, for example what happened to metroid other m.

im still trying to beat SS lol....

so of course the appeal of having a western dev is that we may get a less linear Zelda title. That's not a guarantee since Retro is very Nintendo-infused but there's a lot of people there with western sensibilities.

It's hard to say exactly how a more open Zelda would be. I would be fine with a Mario 64 type openness, where you unlock different areas in a linear fashion but there is a lot of options and branching within those areas. The difference could be that the overworld in the Zelda game would have a much bigger focus than the one in Mario 64 and of course you don't need to separate the goals from the overworld either.

I don't want it to be like Elder Scrolls. I love those games but that isn't Zelda. In Zelda games the main quest is king while in ES the appeal of the overworld overshadows the main quest.

It isn't that hard to say at all actually, The original and A Link to the Past were very open games. As was WindWaker in terms of exploration. It is only relatively recently that Zelda became so linear. Though I don't think it will ever reach the openness of a game like Elder Scrolls, that just wouldn't be Zelda.

Agreed. I dont want it to be a TES game. I like that Zelda is a very structured and memorable adventure. I just wish SS was a bit more open and had more to explore.

To me the only truly open world Zelda game was the original Legend of Zelda. In Legend of Zelda the dungeons had a suggested order but it did not have to be followed.

Being able to explore your map definitely makes LttP and WW less linear than something like Uncharted but that exploration only customizes your game by adding some more health or money or something else that has little impact your success. True progession in those games is very linear and cinematic. You start the game in area 1. You get an ability in area 1 that opens area 2. You get an ability in area 2 that opens area 3. 4,5,6,.... and it all unfolds rather like a movie does.

Tom mentioned this in his review of course and it does take away from the sense of adventure. When someone is either holding your hand or ordering you around the whole way it feels less satisfying. That makes sense right? It's just like real life. Life is more enjoyable when you are in control of your own destiny rather than the other way around. It feels good when your imagination and preferences have some kind of meaningful impact on your life.

Like I said, Legend of Zelda is the only game in the series like that.

That part in interview more specifically is about Mario Kart 7, in which Retro helped out a lot, but overall the Japanese side of Nintendo still had the biggest saying. (I bet no one would have even guessed Retro worked on it, if Nintendo didn't straight out say it) I'd guess, this would be a similiar case for Zelda, in which their influence would be minimal and mostly go to developing graphics and such.

but what's the point of going out on a limb to say retro could be part of Zelda's development if they are just going to take orders from Nintendo?? I thought the idea was to get a western perspective

Regardless, they would be developing some aspect of the game. They could have a major influence on the final product, like the collaboration between Nintendo and Team Ninja, or something minor like with Mario Kart 7.

They will be HD development slaves if so, of course they would bring their perspective and influence the game but the big design decisions (what makes Zelda, Zelda) will always come from EAD.

I don't think I want a Retro Zelda to be honest, even though Metroid Prime is one of my fav games ever.

Retro are very good developers. What could possibly go wrong?
