i can't picture an ice climbers game that doesn't play exactly like the original. like, i can't even begin to think how it would work. like a standard platforming game, but with ice levels only, and emphasis on vertical movement? and project hammer? eh.

Project H.A.M.M.E.R looked intresting before it was put on hold and I'd be happy if it did come out on the WiiU.

As for Ice Climber, it's about time it got a new game.

We already know one of the IPs they're bringing back: Pikmin. If that other rumor is true then the second IP would be Star Fox.

I don't see how they could change Ice Climbers without making it a completely different series, so if they wanted to bring the series back, I think a smaller digital game in the vein of the original would be a good idea. Cant do that kind of game as a full retail release.

I'm inclined to agree with you, but let's remember that before this gen, the idea of full retail 2D platformers was also seen as something that couldn't happen, and that genre has produced some of the best selling titles this gen. Still, I do think that Ice Climber is in a very unique situation, since it will probably require some sort of transformation if it has a chance of being successful.

While we're on the subject of Nintendo IPs, there is one particular NES game that I think needs to have a look from Nintendo: Mach Rider. Granted, I don't recall many people praising the original game, but I think that such a game built in today's day and age could turn out to be pretty big thing for Nintendo if they played their cards right. Think about the Ninja Gaiden franchises and how the reenvisioned Xbox title brought new life to that series. I could see Nintendo doing something very similar with Mach Rider if they were to give the series a new identity and work on it. Still, just a random thought on my part. :P

I don't know about that, I never saw the notion that 2D was viewed as something that couldn't be successful. Most just chose not to do it last gen, but jumped on the bandwagon when they saw it was a money maker this gen. Especially on the digital market. Ice Climbers is just to do damn simple, people would be look at it like an iOS game that cost 60 bucks lol.

Whats with the hate for Ice Climbers? :P

I mean, unless I'm mistaken, nobody really cared about Kid Iccuras either untill his game for the 3DS was revealed. When a franchise hasn't seen the light of day in decades it's completly possible for it to go through a major overhaul. For all we know, it (if this rumor is true, ofcourse) it could become a Mountain Climbing Simulator!

My thoughts exactly. And Project H.A.M.M.E.R. could be a great new IP if handled by the right development team.

But I'm not going to believe this rumor until I see it with my own eyes.

Not really, because the design of Kid Icarus is actually in line with the last stage of the game, and combat was a central them in the original Kid Icarus. That game was likely skipping 20yrs of natural evolution and ending up there. Ice Climbers was just going up, I mean I guess they could transform that into some kind of vertical dungeon crawler, but that would still be further from the original than Kid Icarus is. And I don't see any hate for Ice Climbers, its just not a series that is going to get too many people excited.

Similar things were said about the Kid Icarus series ("Meh, the old games weren't anything special.") before Uprising was announced. I don't see why Ice Climbers couldn't be revived as a good retail or digital game, it just needs the right idea behind it. There are plenty of old series that have been revived over the years, and a new Ice Climbers doesn't need to be as simple as the original.

People wanted a Kid Icarus game because of Pit being Brawl. Ice Climbers been there since Melee and never got that reaction, so the demand really doesn't seem to be there.

I figured it was going to happen after Kid Icarus was announced. Ice Climbers is still a well known brand thanks to Smash Bros, it'll find an audience.

Isn't the main idea behind most revivals to create NEW demand for mostly forgoten franchises, even if there was no previous demand for it? What's stoping that with Ice Climbers?

A co-op ice climbers side scroller would be fun. It would be a two player game, except you and your buddy would be tethered together. Opens up all kinds of gameplay opportunities.

Yeah, but cant create demand if people don't want something. Like I said Ice Climbers were in Melee, there was a demo in Brawl and still, nothing. People aren't interested you cant make them be interested. Its like trying to start a fire in a zero oxygen environment.

Sure. If your buddy ever falls, you can pick them up. Also leaves room for puzzles like maybe one player needs to hand on to a cliff, while another has to swing to reach a switch.

I don't disagree with much of what you said. I just feel that the common sentiment of last gen, with the likes of FPS and GTA-like games dominating the market, was that the 2D genre was too simple or 'kiddy' to succeed for the console market at the time. Heck, even the majority of 3D platformers of last gen were more glorified action games than pure platforming games. As for this gen, you have top notch franchises from major publishers, like Sonic and Mega Man, opting to take the downloadable game route on consoles, as opposed to full retail titles. It was really only after the success of New Super Mario Bros. on the DS where console 2D platformers became a possibility again. So while we may think otherwise, I do think there was a sense of apprehension towards 2D platformers prior to the Wii's explosion of titles in the genre.

As for Ice Climbers, I agree, but common logic would suggest that it would be EXACTLY the same game that it was in the NES days. Much like Kid Icarus, there's bound to be some sort of evolution if this rumor turns out to be true. Whether or not that evolution justifies the effort behind this retro revival is something I obviously have no way of telling. :P

which would work with the whole "vertical platformer" thing. you know, instead of sidescroller, "upscroller" :P

Lack of interest in a 25 year old game doesn't automatically equal lack of interest in a new game, with new features and new gameplay mechanics. There was no demand for a new Excite game, but they made one for Wii's launch anyway.

It's more like trying to start a fire without a match, it may take more effort but it's still possible. ;)

From what I remember of Project Hammer when it was first shown off, it looked pretty good compared to other Wii games graphically but it was very linear and seemed to play like a simple beat 'em up. Unless they changed up the gameplay significantly and opened up the game, it's not going to be anything special.

As for Ice Climbers, I can see a climbing game having some interesting gameplay, especially if they remember to include the different enemies that the original had with some sort of spin on them. Imagine trying to climb up a steep, icy chasm with the only thing you can reach is a thin ledge that could very well break if you and your partner were to put your weight on it, and a blizzard is starting up and you need to set up a camp just so you can try to get some sort of fire and stay warm for the night. Do you and your partner split up so one of you can get up on the ledge to try to secure a way up for the other, or do you stay stuck in the chasm and risk being buried by an avalanche? Obviously this setting is likely too dark for an Ice Climbers game, but it's just an idea, and in my head it looks pretty cool.

But this rumor has no credibility at all so it really doesn't matter. There's no chance Nintendo is going to try to bring Project Hammer back, but an Ice Climbers game could happen, it just doesn't really seem like there's much of a game based on the original.
