The best answer is to have a lobby for people who don't want to snake, introducing an overheating system would ruin time trials mode which would make a HUGE number of time trials fanatics VERY angry lol.

How about give the best of both worlds. You can't just have one or the other because if you create a snake-free lobby, what's to still stop people from snaking. I don't think it's fair to have the system boot someone out of a snake-free lobby because what if someone is double boosting (but not snaking) and the system thinks it's snaking. Also you just can't have the overheating system for the people who find snaking to be the most enjoyable part of the game. Then again, I guess you can't make everyone happy.

Snaking is when a player uses the mini-boost in Mario Kart on the straightaways.  You go back and forth across the track and it looks like a snake when it's moving, thus the term snaking.  The community is split about 50-50 as to whether or not it is considered cheating or a bug in the game.

[QUOTE="oblivious789"][QUOTE="criscotwister"]if it takes skill to do it, then learn and master it. it adds depth to the game and more skill drifting has always been in mario kart right? or is this different

But that's like saying that counting cards is fair. It takes lots of skill and brainpower to count cards with enough strategy to win, however, most casinos will blacklist a patron who is able to do it because they consider it cheating.

Counting cards isn't cheating, it just causes them to lose money which is why they ban it. Instead they use like 7 decks which puts the odds greatly in the dealers favour. The more 10's the less the odds of non-dealer winning. Card counting is in most card games, Seven Card Stud poker you have to keep track of what people folded. In Bridge and euchre you need to keep track of the trump that has been played. In Hearts you need to keep track of the Hearts and the Queen. Etc. Drifting should stay in, but I agree that it should only be allowed on turns. They could just program an area just before a turn where you can do it.

This post right here is a big reason why the people who don't like snaking feel the way they do.  Players shouldn't be forced to race against a guy like this who seems, to me, to act like he's better than every other player who doesn't use the same tactics he does.

Agreed. The less articulate pro-snaker's argument goes something like this: "Oh man yousuckyou needa getbetterat MKusuckzzzz." Apparently, you see, snaking is the definitive art in all of videogames. People who think it's against the spirit of the game, or that it makes it less fun, are actually deluded. The truth is they're jealous. Even if they can do it themselves. They're probably just jealous that they can't do it better. etc. In conclusion, I hate snaking. It's not a fun way to play the game. And let's not kid ourselves that it's second only to brain surgery in terms of skill requirement. What about keeping the drift, but taking away the speed boost?

I've been in favor of, in the next Mario Kart game, that the creators make "drifting zones" near the corners of a track and that you can't use a mini-boost in a straightaway.  it would be very easy to program this in and then make a marker of some sort on the track to let you know you've entered the "zone" of drifting so to speak.  That would keep drifting and mini-boosts in the game, but elminate snaking.

Snaking is not cheating, but it definitely makes Mario Kart DS less fun.  The advantage you gain by being good at snaking on MK DS seems to be much greater than the advantage you get from being good at mini turbos in the other Mario Kart versions.  The thing that really ruined Mario Kart DS for me was that there's no penalty for quitters.

QFT Problem is, you get people that like to play "casual" and they auto-lose to snakers. So thier options are limited. Either learn to snake, or keep trying to find matches where isn't a snaker. I think Nintendo needs to introduce a lobby system. Basically, where you can go to join certain games. Like, "Just for FUN" or "Serious only."

I agree 100%. Removing snaking from Mario Kart would be like removing the advanced techniques like wave-dashing from Smash Bros.

i completely agree with the smash bros. reference. it wouldn't be the same game if you took out snaking. The lobby system is all they need to implement to be able to keep snakers away from non-snakers... which i think i'll call mousers, because snakers eat them ALIVE

Basically, you hold the R button to begin to drift and then you push left and right on the D-pad until your sparks turn blue and then release the R button.  That will give you a mini boost and then you repeat it over and over making a "snaking" motion on the straightaways...

For Double Dash you would use the analog stick.
