I was going to make this thread earlier but I was postponed by laziness and a readily supply of Fritos so I'm doing it now....

Is anyone else completely shocked that Sonic the Hedgehog is the biggest hero in Smash Bros?

I mean I followed the story mode (which I now have to play again because of a new Wii) and I still can't get over the fact that at the end of the game it's going to be Sonic the Hedgehog that saves the day.

One of the biggest Nintendo titles in the Wii's lifespan and Sonic the Hedgehog is the hero.

(for those wondering why I'm saying his complete name, Sonic the Hedgehog, it's because if I say it enough I may finally have it completely register in my head)

All through game we see characters have to take part in saving the world. Mario, Link , Samus, Donkey Kong, Kirby, etc....... they all play a part in the game on the way to the final boss. Each one gets their facetime and each one wins as you progress.

Until the end of the game, at the final boss the game presents a window and proceeds to toss everything out of it.

Mario fails, Link fails, Samus fails, Nintendo good guys fail, Nintendo bad guys fail, it's over. Every single Nintendo character fails and now the final boss has the final laugh.

Oh wait, what's that????? Why it's.......it's.......

SEGA'S MASCOT, SONIC THE HEDGEHOG, TO SAVE THE DAY!

Oddly enough while Nintendo's characters had to make their way in teams to the final boss getting their rears kicked and kept on regrouping Sonic the Hedgehog made it all the way to the boss as well ON HIS OWN. Then he's the only one that can even put a dent in the final boss. Sonic was the only one able to put a chink in the boss' armor that allowed there to be a final battle.

Was anyone else shocked that it was Sonic the Hedgehog was the ultimate hero in the game?

Its cause sonic is one of the last to unlock (only toon link and wolf after him) and face it the story was just nintendo's way of linking all the characters together with the story just a method of gluing them all together, so i think Sonic as a hero was an unintended consequence. Although it does make for some very amusing irony.

P.S. is any one else happy to see sonic as the hero in a decent game since the 1990's :)

I think Sonic was the most requested new character. It doesn't surprise me to see him get the spotlight.

My guess is that he was added to the last minute. Sonic wasn't planed to be in the game from the beginning like Snake was. So sakurai had to fit him in withou redoing everything that was already done. And it's kind of cool to see him pop up like that. Though it's weird because he is annouced right away on the box, so it wasn't a total surprise for me.

Ya..I wasn't happy with seeing Sonic as the hero at the end either. I think it's a way of saying Sega has given up in trying to top Mario as the best platformer on the market by appearing in a Nintendo game? I don't know if that's how anyone else feels, but that's the way I look at it. :|

That's the way I look at it, a little of a late addition to the game. Also, Sonic just happened to surprise Taboo, and probably took the easiest road to get to him. I don't know, my mind just makes up all these stories up, like when Sonic actually stopped at Wienerschnitzel for some chilli-dogs (hmmm, that sounds so good) before the final battle.

I hated the fact that Sonic had the least inspired introduction in the game... I was like, "Wait... wth... so Sonic just chills in Subspace?" then I cam across this interpretation on the Brawl Boards... it's kind of interesting :P Master Hand represents the spirit of creativity necessary to craft beautiful and fun games. He's the visionary, the artist. Without him, all you have is the same tired crap over and over again. Crazy Hand represents the spirit of destruction and conflict necessary to enjoy games. He's the one who makes the driving reasons to PLAY the game. Without him, all you have is pretentious artsy fartsy bull. Lots of fluff, no substance. In this case, what does Tabuu represent? Tabuu represents series decay. Subspace represents terrible games. The dragging of things into Subspace through the bombs is the fall of what was once great. No single character could fight such a terrible force, thus, everyone who stood against Tabuu was defeated with ease. Even Master Hand, the spirit of creativity, couldn't hope to even begin to hope to lay a scratch on it alone. Maybe if his other half had been there. This also, by the way, explains why Sonic didn't show up until he did. He had already been a prisoner of Tabuu's for a solid four-five years now. This also explains why Tabuu effortlessly destroys everybody else but Sonic blindsides him. Why would you expect somebody you've beaten consistently for four years to suddenly pose a threat to you? lol

So to go on further...we know that Snake had been invited to Brawl (just like Ness and Lucas) and agreed to take part. Thus why we see them so often. Does that mean that Sonic hadn't been invited at all? That Sonic is crashing the party? Could that explain why Shadow is the only other character we see in brawls? Sonic was trapped, but Shadow was preserved (like Little Mac, Saki, and Ray MKI) and only Sonic knew where to find him?

Still, had this been a more appropiate metaphor, does that mean that Super Mario Bros. 2 actually created subspace? Should Mario and co. have stayed behind to clean up their unfortunate creation? Or is this the plothole for SSB4 that will open the door for more franchises to emerge into Nintendo's universe?

Lol funny. but what I would really like to see is a story like Super Mario Bros Z on newgrounds.com, that would rock. Also, I didn't play ssb64, was too poor to have a N64, what's the story on this one

however, sonic was indeed added at the last minute becouse after some simple polling it was found a lot of people wanted sonic in ssbb so he was added late and thus was added late in the subsapce mode i read on smashbros dojo but i dont feel lik efinding it

That's probably how they got him in the game in the first place. "We'll let him be the hero and see if anyone notices..." "Well ok then". I liked Zuma's interpretation, but if that was the case, has anything came back out of subspace yet then? j/k don't get all game defensive with me.

In all i think Zuma has the best answer/hypothesis here i 99% agree but here is my reason i think sonic's world got eaten up by subspace too but sakurai didnt want to add the cutscene like the halberd it would take too much time to actually add those cutscenes and add to the story i think sonic entered the subspace like the other characters and being there too late he sees tabuu and tries to attack him and suceeds in total i think all along they were going to put sonic in the game the game was probably delayed because for a year or a few months they were trying to add a definate story and make all the cutscenes amazing so i think they were trying to make you infer what happend like with the halberd

This guy is right, Sonic wasn't even added in Smash Bros until 2007, and Sakurai did all he could to fit him into the story. Besides, Sonic doesn't have any extraordinary strength or anything, he was just the only one fast enough to stop the boss before becoming a trophy. (He IS Sonic after all)

this guy is clearly is not using common sense its not the fact that sonic was special enough to save the day they didnt even no if sonic was gonna be in the game so they couldnt give him a big him role and its not really that significant what he did if they knew for sure he was going to be in it he prolly would have a linking small story role like everyone else

I don't think it was meant to be seen exactly how you described it. I think they did that with Sonic because it was a big surprise (assuming your someone who hasn't been following the games development), right at the end of the game, a non-Nintendo character jumping out and saving the day.

I doubt there was actually too much deliberation between the subspace emissiary designers and the box artists about Sonic the Hedgehog. Also although everyone here on Gamespot knows about Sonics inclusion in the game you have to account for casual gamers and others 'not in the know'. At any rate I'm still sceptical over the idea that Nintendo did this to hype Sonics inclusion in the game.

Sonic is on the box and in the manual

They make note to point out Sonic on the box and even show not only a close up shot but it's on top of another shot of him running in the Green Hill Zone

No. Master Hand represents the hands of the gamers. The gamers that control the characters in those gaming universes. All of the creators of video games don't have to use their hands either. Shigeru Miyamoto for example. He just runs the development team, and checks up on what's going on.

Master Hand is an extremely lame final boss, btw.

Crazy Hand represents the spirit of destruction and conflict necessary to enjoy games. He's the one who makes the driving reasons to PLAY the game. Without him, all you have is pretentious artsy fartsy bull. Lots of fluff, no substance.
ZumaJones07

As for Crazy Hand, I don't know much about him..or whatever it is. And speaking of the interpretation, it sounds pretty pretentious itself.

The way you say it makes it sound really cool. Like Vegeta saving Goku then going back to hell. The enemy for so long (1990s) becomes their Savior. That is just awesome. Better to work together then fall divided.

Were they really gonna make Mario the last person to unlock? No, he's the Nintendo mascot, so therefore he should be unlocked and playable first.

He was the smallest hero. He showed up at the last second with no introduction and no real significance.the_leet_kid

Ok, just in case you didn't play the game (which I'm glad I said spoiler or I'd feel bad)

Everyone single Nintendo character falls on their faces, they all fail to beat the last guy. Heck they all fail to even hurt him.

In comes Sonic and saves everyone.

It was clear (to me) that they added him into the story at the last second. I don't think of that character as a hero.

If not for him the bad guy would have won, all the characters would be toast, and the game would be over.

So how you view games is you're supposed to let the boss win the final battle and then have the game over screen come up, that means you won the game.

Awesome

Every single nintendo character did not fall on their faces, Dedede, Kirby, Luigi, Ness, Bowser, Link, Zelda, Wario, and Gannondorf were all fine before Sonic even showed up. Sonic shows up randomly and helps them too.

And as for your last comment, I have no idea what you are talking about.

I actually thought they just forgot to put sonic in throughout the middle of the game and then said "lets just make him appear out of nowhere!" I kind of disliked the way they introduced sonic.

Well...

Sonic only damaged one of his wings...

He helped... but I dont think that qualifies as 'saving everyone' IMO.

But I think the true biggest surprise was Kind Dedede saving everyone. Who the heck knew that those badges were timed to resurrect people? I surely didn't.
