I'd like it if it were named "Generation", seeing as other companies are beginning to copy nintendo.

Well, let's see. The Wii's original name was the Revolution...What about the Nintendo Riot? Then again, actual riots might appear outside some game stores. ^^; Not a good idea.

What about the Nintendo Liberation?

Or, completely going against the whole "revolution" theme...

Nintendo King.

Wii too! lol

Unless it has a new feature, then it will be named in the same way DS / 3DS is. If not, probably Wii HD or something.

None of the above. There won't be a Wii 2 or a Wii HD. Remember how Reggie was saying that they won't just make a Wii with more horsepower and, instead, would wait until they could come up something OTHER than adding Hertz and Bytes? That's because the Nintendo was already the incumbent leader in the portable business. In consoles, they are following a strategy of disruption. In order to create a wheel of disruption, you have to disrupt your own product, not just add features to it. Chances are they'll even ditch the Wii moniker; as crazy as that may sound if you follow traditional business practices, it's part of the strategy of disruption.

Actually, I think there is a chance that next Wii will 'just' be an improved Wii with 'minor' add-ons, like 3DS. It's basically a DS, but with 'depth' which won't be implemented as widely as Motion / IR. Because of this, they will add more of these minor things like rumble and an accelerometer to compensate for not having this huge new idea like the Stulys was.

720p

Wiimote+Nunchuck 2.0, and by that I mean improved speaker, enhanced WM+, maybe even some blow mechanic like in the DS. Basically more input features.

Improved online

Maybe, just maybe, a new big thing!

To be honest, the Wii feels like a demo with huge potential waiting around the next corner. Where are all the awesome groundbreaking re-defining sports games that utilize the Wii control scheme? I think Wii 2 is going to be Wii-centric with 'minor' addons and not this new big thing

BUT!! It would be for the best if there is such a new thing because they have exhausted Wii features in SMG, I don't want Sunshine 2 as the next Mario. For the Metroid franchise, it has only been seen in 1 game so far, which is MP3 and I want more of the same in this case. With Zelda Wii, we'll have to wait and see. But I can't imagine another Mario a la SMG without this new big thing.

Again, you can't compare the DS and the Wii. Nintendo was dominating the handheld business and was FORCED to DISRUPT the console business. Two completely different business strategies: One is orthodox (DS), the other is disruptive (Wii).

The DS was pegged to fail because of the touchscreen and different interface. It was just as disruptive as the Wii.

Wii 2 would be okay, but it'll be something that's not too complicated. So I don't expect to see revolution or generation or anything like that.

I mean, I'm for change, but not that fast change. I'd like them to fully exhaust the Wii features before moving on. Basically, the Wii feels like a demo (Wii sports / resort) which showcase what the Wii is capable of. I'd love to see more of that, with improved controls and 720p before I move on to the next big thing.

tl:dr; your idea = 2014 release, my theory = 2012 release. Do you get my point?

sonic_spark

It was innovative, very innovative, but not disruptive. "Analysts" "predicted" its "failure" because Sony was releasing a handheld too and they "thought" Sony could do no wrong. And yes, that's a lot of quotation marks, but they serve a purpose.

It wouldn't be a smart move. Of course, their next console will be HD and all, but they can't risk splitting their audience. In the handheld market Nintendo can do a lot of things that they simply can't do with the Wii.

not having numbers. at least not to indicate continuation (stupid 3DS ruining my pre-set argument >.>) and it could be named anything. they'll probably make it simple and catchy (no "nintendo 64" or "gamecube")

The way I see it, the wii was exhausted a long time ago. I mean, the thing is so underpowered that most developers would rather not work with it, since their artistic vision can be more fully realized on more powerful consoles, and so you guys end up with lazy developers churning out shovelware at breakneck speeds. The online is also lackluster ( friendcodes? WTF??), and of course nintendo itself is one of the only developers actually making good games for it. I think its high time for a new system. They've already established a comfortable lead in marketshare, with over 70 million units sold, and they've likely made most of the money they're going to from it, so why not release a new console within the next year on par with the capabilities of the other guys at a lower price, since the tech has depreciated?

Haha I think you would be pretty amazed how much a company can milk something. I beleive they will do something unexpected again. I thought the disruption strategy comment did have some weight. I am hoping that the 3ds and the new wii will take vibes from apple, with their super sexy hardware. Combine that with nintendo's sexy software and you have a winner. I have my doubts that nintendo would make an app store where anyone could post something which would be sweet, but I can dream. I just hope they make something Awesome. Now let me take a crack at the name, hmmmmm.... I have no idea. When they throw something so unexpected as Wii out there how can we guess the next one?

Now that you mention Apple... I'm inclined to believe that the 3DS is a preemptive strike against Apple.

Here's the thing about disruption, the Wii HD/Wii 2 and whatnot: If Nintendo wants to keep going with the strategy of disruption, they'll have to disrupt the Wii. That's why I insist on telling you guys that there won't be a Wii HD or a Wii 2, but a completely different thing. If there is a Wii HD/Wii 2, Nintendo would be abandoning the blue ocean/disruption strategy. If they do that, there are exactly two possible scenarios:

1) The Playstation 2 scenario.

2) The Playstation 3 scenario.

Some of you only see the Playstation 2 scenario, thus, you claim that the Wii HD/Wii 2 is a great idea. However, the Playstation 3 scenario is just as likely. That's why following the strategy of disruption once again is what Nintendo will more likely do. It will be much more cumbersome in terms of R&D and whatnot, but it's the smart thing to do.

If they drop "Wii" from the console's name then they would be making a bad mistake. The name Wii alone would guarantee a big amount of systems moved around, it is too strong of a brand.

Just to clarify, I don't think ninty should release a console whose only justification is more horsepower with which to output in high-def. That's kind of a "duh" statement. Of course there should be other features that set it apart from its predecessor, but exactly how much more room there is for nintendo to innovate is questionable. I cant imagine what they might try next lol, but anyway, I don't know why Iwata and Reggie think that's all we want, because I for certain want something more than just HD visuals, which are awesome, but don't ensure quality gameplay alone. I hope they can come up with something that can top both Natal, and Move (ugh) to heighten gameplay experiences and sweeten the HD package.

Motion controls will be a given. A standard. They will be there, but there will be something else that, more than likely, will have nothing to do with motion sensing. While Sony is talking about 3D games for home consoles, which, arguably, is what common sense dictates, Nintendo releases the 3DS, which is a handheld (and you won't need the nerdy glasses, mind you). That's how out of the box Nintendo is thinking.

Yeah, you're right 3d is probably a given, but I have my own doubts about it's effectiveness in gaming, which I wont go into. I'm just having trouble thinking of what else could be done to enhance the gaming experience, short of making us wear a VR helmet. I guess we'll have to wait and see. It would be nice if ninty revealed the new console this E3, but that's about as likely to happen as me winning the lottery while making a hole in one and being struck by lightning, watching pigs fly all the while.

Nintendo won't release a new console

because

Wii is such an off the wall name for a system, if they go that route again it becomes cliche,

and if they go back to a conventional name they won't meet the same sucess of the Wii.

Nintendo sits on it's hands as Sony PS4 and Microsoft Xbox 24/7 are released, a while turns into another entire console generation. After a final price cut to 25cents, and6 billion sales, Wii console sales dry up, every concieveable type of game had been made and 3rd parties were long gone since software was retailing for your 2 cents.

Nintendo goes bankrupt. Wii quit.

Actually, i really doubt that as only a small percentage of the nintendo userbase, or anyone come to think of it, will have 3D TV any time soon. Just look at how many people don't have HD or have just got it, i don't think they'll be wanting to shell out for a new TV. Nintendo would never restrict thier potential userbase like this as they try to appeal to as many people as they can. (Case in point, Nintendo Wii)
