If you are at all passionate about the industry that creates our games, this article has to be read. If you are concerned about the lack of 3rd party support (or the poor efforts they have put out thus far), this article has to be read. If you hate the constant flow of "casual games" clogging up the Wii's library, this article absolutely has to be read.

Why do I emphasize the importance of this article? Well, to be honest, it's a long read and I know that a lot of people are much too lazy to go through it. But if you simply just take out 15 minutes of your day and read through this, you will understand why it should be read.

In fact, from this point on, if I offer this article to someone who says that the Wii has too many casual games, or that 3rd parties can't sell on the Wii, and they refuse to read it, I will no longer continue that discussion with them. This article is that important. It basically kills any debate on those issues.

I strongly feel that this will shut up anyone who says that Nintendo has a problem here. It will also answer the question "why do 3rd parties sell poorly on Nintendo consoles?"

LINK

Just read it, already. Then, discuss. Do you agree, or disagree?

Yeah, don't worry. I'm not about giving people spyware or anything like that. Besides, Gamespot has my information, so if I did give you a virus, they'd know where to find me. Viruses FTL!

What I basically summed up from this article was: Industries chase trends, immitations and copies of genre-defining games are rarely as good as the originals, there's technically no such thing as "casual gaming", and Nintendo always seems infinitely smarter than all of it's critics. So this article really didn't teach me anything that I didn't already know.

It was an OK read, though...long like you said, but the occasional picture helped.

Yeah, but see you already knew this. This article is for people who didn't know it yet (which is a lot of people, by the way).

I did like the whole "birdman" analogy; how copy-cat designers look at the "feathers" of games like GTA 3 and Super Mario and not the "flight" they take. Never would have thought to present it that way.

Yeah it's a great analogy that keeps you reminded throughout the article that this is what is going on in the industry.

And even though you and I already knew this information, I don't think I've ever seen it presented so well. I mean, every piece of information is right there, you know? It'll be really useful when I'm too lazy to argue with some guy who makes a thread saying "OMG! NO 3rd Party Support!!! WHY?!?"

I'm sitting at work watching the clock tick down so...I read the whole thing. It was long winded, but honestly, anyone who doesn't read that article and at least crack a smile at Nintendo's brilliant and proven strategy must be made of stone. Whoever wrote it wrote an impeccable piece of journalism with great supporting facts and quotes, and that birdman analogy was definitely the right way to draw readers in.

I bookmarked it. I have to show this to some fanboy friends of mine...I was just arguing with someone about how the 3rd party support issue isn't a massive deal to Nintendo, but I'm not nearly as articulate as this writer is. I only hope I can convince them to read at least the key parts of it.

was alright, nowt groundbreaking said in there, we all know that games developers complain about nintendo's games being the only ones to sell is because they are trying to avoid the fact that they made a bad game not really applying to any sort of market

but yeah, would be nice if somebody like EA read that tho

that was a really long but brilliant read. I have never doubted nintendo's strategy because i see the Wii as what the DS started as,(great first party, poor third party). This article opened my eyes again and showed me why I am a proud Wii and DS owner.

It's only going to go uphill from here guys!

Amazing read, I like how the author points out that for older gamers like me, I was "trained" by games like megaman, mario old final fantasies. Nintendo just want to "educate" the younger and returning gamers with game like wii sport, wii play and gradually introducing them to more and more complex games. Now if only third parties would read that

i think thAT article was made by a fanboy none the less, no officail , if it was it would be on gamespot and every big site devoted to gaming including ign ,

that link=fail its fan site material

as i just listed lots of third party titles it all depends on your favorite genres, thats all ,

and with wiis strong success,, you rest assured there will be more ,and who ever said most of wii games are minigame/casual games, is not true, theres only what less then 10 of the over 800 titles out that are minigame based, marioparty is a board game so it doesnt go there,

itll go with board games and monopoly and marioparty been around since n64 or earlier so its no suprise your gonna see marioparty ,

and with wii only being out for a year no one should be complaining with all the aaa and aa in between since launch ,

why do you think ps2 is successful, it had games that appealed to everybody including non gamers, hence ddr and such ,

and you cant deny like wii ps2 had its fair share of cheap budget games infact theres more budget games /shovel ware on ps2 then on any console in the last gen era ,
so why complain now,

it does not credit any one good to complain when its already too late,

and making threads like this one is a 60-90 percent based off a fanboy site,

and there for like i said 50 percent of it is biased, putting 2d games on the bottom of a chart hmm ,,fail those are what created this industy hey you gotta start some where, cant just get up and create a ps3 like game in one year, it took over 20 yrs for technology to go this far so putting genres in a list is biased already. i think the person who created that site forgot nintendo already admited to much casual games wont help and wii play was their last one since, wii fit is possibly the last non game we will see from nintendo ,

theres alot more they have also that site claimed its all nintendos fault that third party devs make the games they make,

how can it be nintendos fault, thats like saying its sony fault that third partys delay thier games

again why i say its a fan boy site, everything in that article is half baked, fanboy talk , i would like to see an officail site such as this or nintendo to create that same article then id believe it but with the above list of games ive seen and liked or looked interisted in ,, i wont believe it,

The article took me about an hour to read because I am a slow reader but it was well worth it. It was one of the best articles I have ever read. I hope 3rd party developers will realise Nintendos strategy. They probably won't.

This part was brilliant:

I admit I find myself in astonishment. This is the process I am seeing:

Nintendo: "We are following the strategy of disruption!"

NPD: "Nintendo wins!"

Journalist: "How are you winning, Nintendo?"

Nintendo: "We are following the strategy of disruption!"

Journalist: (ignores Nintendo) "What is going on here, analysts and third parties?"

Analyst: "It is a casual gamer boom!"

Third Parties: "OMG! Easy money! Quick guys, everyone start making casual games!"

Nintendo: "We are following the strategy of disruption!"

Journalist: (philosophically) "Will casual games cause the downfall of the hardcore games? Let me write many editorials about this!"

Analyst: (philosophically) "Is the casual game boom a fad? Let us pontificate over this."

Third Parties: "Hey guys! How you like my casual games? They sure are snazzy! I will make millions! I am such the business whiz!"

Nintendo: "We are following the strategy of disruption!"

Journalist: (scratches head) "You hear something?"

Analyst: "It was just Nintendo speaking. They are saying the same thing."

Journalist: "Yeah! Haha! Same old marketing speak. I am so much smarter about business than Nintendo. In my next interview with Iwata, I'll give him some business lessons."

Third Parties: (cries) "Oh no! My casual games are not selling!"

Journalist: "Obviously, this is because people buy Nintendo consoles for Nintendo games."

Analyst: "Nintendo needs to assist these third parties in getting their casual games to sell."

Third Parties: "That's right! They need to do what WE want them to!"

Nintendo: "We are following the strategy of disruption!"

Journalist: (yawns) "Is that all they say? (becomes excited) Ohhh! Look! A new hardcore game is being made with fresh textures." (runs off)

Analyst: "Obviously, Sony and Microsoft are branching with casual games themselves. Poor Nintendo. Too bad they are out of tricks. I expect Playstation 3 to be surpassing them in a year or two. The market revolves around technology you know."

Third Parties: "My casual games aren't selling? Why!? I do not understand!"

Is it not amazing how everyone talks about the casual gamer boom except Nintendo? Instead, Nintendo keeps talking disruption while everyone either ignores these quotes or misinterpret 'disruption' to mean 'change' or 'innovation'.

I really don't think you read that right. This article is PRO Nintendo, not anti-Nintendo. It's about how 3rd parties are the ones to blame for the poor efforts and cheap "casual" games.

Yes, 3rd parties have been supporting the Wii, but a good majority of their games are of poor quality.

Why would this go in system wars? What about it has anything to do with Sony or Microsoft? Sorry, but I think you need to reread that.

I'm reading it later but it has pictures of people dressed like Christmas lights so I mean on that alone it's worth a click

Oh and what's with people thinking that one of our usual posters is going to send people somewhere that could damage their comp? I mean sure ZELDUH32345 with 4 total posts might, but a regular?

Yeah, that's the unfortunate thing about this article. Everybody knows that a good majority of gamers -- especially the ones who hate on the Wii -- don't have the patience to read all of that. Even if it was half the length I doubt many people would read it.

Hey, like you yourself said, it's a long read. It would help if the author basically had a closing summary paragraph that touched on the main points in the article. People like things quick and to the point...and with lots of pictures! Preferably, pop-ups. Remember those? Man, it was fun to be 5; so many things entertained you!

Believe me, if summarized, it doesn't strike you like it's supposed to. Man, this article os powerful stuff. Not just his analysis, but there's a lot of incredible quotes from interviews and articles that went under the radar.

Don't worry, it was a light-hearted eyeroll, not a judging eyeroll.

Mine was judging

It's 19 pages if you keep the pics and have wide margins in Word.

So that would come out to about 14 normal pages.
