With Nintendo's Virtual Console, selecting 5 VC games developed by Nintendo is just too easy. Those games usually top most of the "best games of all time" lists. But now, six months into the Wii's life, the VC has quite a few awesome games. Some of them many have slipped under the radar of most people considering the fact that most of Nintendo's classic masterpieces are now available. Here's my Top 5 Third Party VC game list:
5. Sonic The Hedgehog - while it's not likely that this game slipped under anyone's radar, this game is so legendary that it demends attention. The only mascot that was able to compete with Mario was Sonic the Hedgehog, and it was all because of this first game.
4. Super Castlevania IV - This was the best entry into the Castlevania series before Symphony of the Night came along. It was this game that cemented the expectations of high quality music and visuals into the minds of gamers. The graphics may have not been anything to take note of artistically, but the special effects in this game were mind-blowing at the time.
3. Romance of the Three Kingdoms IV: Wall of Fire - Here's a game that doesn't get the respect it deserves. Nothing, and I mean nothing, is more satisfying than creating a league of Super Generals in the Character creation mode, building up your cities and armies, invading neighboring cities, and beheading all of your enemies that did you wrong. While alot of people may complain about the menu system or deep learning curve, back in 1995 this was the best in turn based strategy hands down, and remained that way for many years. This is definately the deepest Virtual Console game that you can download right now. Don't forget to keep your popular support and loyalties high, and sell your crops only when the market is good. This isn't a game for dummies.
2. Actraiser - While it hasn't appeared on the VC in North America quite yet, this game should have everyone excited for very good reasons. As a side scroller, it was average and simplistic. As a simulator, it was interesting yet a little too easy. Combined flawlessly into one package with the best graphics and music that were available at the time, it became a legendary game. There is something really appealling about playing a game where you play God, but it's the fact that this game constantly entertains you while doing so that makes it a winner. An often overlooked classic.
1.Street Fighter II: The World Warrior - While everyone knows Street Fighter, and at this point you either love it or hate it. This game not only started the entire fighting genre as we know it today, but it did two other important things as well: For maybe the very first time, an almost absolutely perfect port of an arcade game was released within homes within the timeframe that the game was still popular and...this game gave Nintendo the upper hand in the war against Sega. With the release of this game, the death of arcades was only a few years away. As far as fighting games go, this is the purest form. Master this game, and you will be able to play all other 2D fighting games with outstanding competance.
Well, like I always say, this is just my opinion. Your Top 5 will of course be much different.
