Let's say, just for kicks, that the guys at Nintendo, a little over 12 years ago, decided to make Mario 64. They didn't put any effort into the camera, they added unnecessary elements both storyline and gameplay wise, that added nothing to the game, and they rushed it out the door as fast as possible to slug it out with competitors. The game was considered "decent" by most people, but it didn't add anything, and was overshadowed by Sonic Adventure which just launched with the Sega Saturn. A truly revolutionary title that pushed the boundaries of 3D gameplay and placed standards that have yet to be improved with modern technology.
Now, a year later, everybody who had faith in Nintendo and Mario that was involved with it from the beginning leaves Nintendo and heads to a different developer or retires.
Nintendo comes up with the Gamecube and makes mostly mediocre 1st party titles and relies on its name and small 3rd party support to garner a profit.
In it's twilight, Nintendo gives up the console race and becomes a devoted developer and sells its games to the current competition, Sega, Sony, and to a smaller portion, Xbox.
Mario is sold out for every gimmick in the game, adding guns, swords, strange and unnecessary comrades, and the kitchen sink.
Through all of this there is still an idiotic following of diehards that have been supporting Mario since his early years, and a group of younger people who don't know any better that still push Mario's titles towards the magical 500k copies sold mark, hoping in vain for that lost gem that's coming their way.
Thank whatever video game gods there are that this DID NOT HAPPEN. This is a generalized outlook of a mirror negative outcome happening to Nintendo instead of Sega. Not every Mario game that comes out is gold. That's outrageous. Many Mario titles are made by third party developers and sold by Nintendo that don't have a shred of ingenuity or fun involved. The first party Mario titles are the ones everyone wants. They have been a constant source of light for the Nintendo followers.
Somewhere along the line, Sega lost its heart.
There. That's it. I'm done. No more justifying what I've said. I can't do it anymore.
