Midway has confirmed that the next-gen new Mortal Kombat game will be released on the Wii, PS3, 360 in 2008 or 2009.

They've also confirmed it will use Epic's Unreal Engine (Notably used for Gears of War)

Meaning a game using the same engine as Gears of War will eventually be on the Wii.

Doesn't mean it will look exactly the same, but it will look good.

As far as MK games go, they haven't been good since the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air had new episodes.

But, what does this mean?

Could a Wii game look on par or very close to Gears of War? In 2009 perhaps?

I dunno.

What do you think?

I would assume it would be made under the Unreal 2.0 engine, which had games like UT2004. Granted, UT2004 looks very nice, so Im sure the games will as well, but definitely not on par with GeoW.

I should've been more clear in my original post, sorry,

The Unreal 3 Engine. The Gears Engine, if you will.

There have been a number of good MK games in the last few years.... And I think it'll look very nice, the Wii is capable of much more than the first generation titles show, like with any system.

And GraveRIP, you should read more closely.  It does say Next Gen Mortal Kombat for release in 2008.  U R Slow. Lol.

Well you're not slow, you're illiterate. It reads Next-Gen MK for 2008 release and the other Link I posed confirms the Unreal Engine 3 usage.

Wii is HD. 480i may not be the best HD but its still HD.

And it case you didn't know the Wii's hardware can handle 720p, though most believe it would stress it and hurt the frame rate.

Wii is HD.

Ok ill try to explain this to u nice and slow. The first link u have only says mk[next gen] and the sec link only says next gen mk to use unreal engine....NOW where does it say Wii....it doesnt..wat makes u think they are talking about wii....when has wii ever used anything close to the unreal engine 3. On the same note u do understand the wii couldnt possiblly use the amout of processing power to use unreal engine 3. Understand even if the wii does do 720p it wont matter when its not strong enough. Sry again if i bashed you but all im tryin to say is its like 1/1000 chance of happening. Expect the engine on 360 or ps3.

No that's not. 720p and up is HD. 480i is what we've been looking for since the inception of TVs. 480p isn't even HD. As for the topic, I thought it was the Doom 3 engine that they said could be done on Wii?

On the second page of the interview is the following exchange.  And it's a good reason why someone would get the idea Midway is using the Unreal 3 engine for the Wii:

GI: How far into development is it?

Boon: The main thing we're doing right now is the core technology. We're using the Unreal 3 engine, and we're getting our base, "How do display a character, normal-mapping, bump-mapping, shadows" all the things that are expected of the game. I have a bunch of ideas on paper in terms of things that I'd like to theoretically try, but it's not like it's in a playable state yet.....

GI: Hypothetical time-frame for release. Are we talking '08?

Boon: Yeah. I would guess-and I wouldn't promise-it would be around the fall, Novemberish time of 2008.

GI: Across all three platforms?

Boon: We're talking about that."

--To be perfectly honest it is not absolutely crystal clear he is talking about the Wii using the Unreal Tourney 3 engine; however, the bulk of the interview is about the Wii's use of motion control for the MK title due out in May AND the Wii in general.  Taking that into consideration and and the quote I listed above it is very reasonable to conclude to the Wii's next-gen MK game will make use of the Unreal 3 engine.  I think I managed to post this without misspelling anything.  Grammar: give it a shot sometime, GraveRIP, it ain't so bad.

If they put Wii as a multiplat version of next gen MMK then its almost assured they are using Unreal.

Seriously we should do a petition like all the Sony fans except for something positive.

We should petition to get MK next gen on Wii. Then it would definitely come to Wii. WHOSE WITH ME!!!

I dunno.

darth-pyschosis

I though the Wiii couldn't handle UE3. That they would use UE 2,5.

Anyway a different engine doesn't affect the  Wii's specs. The Wii will probably never have a game that looks better than Ninja Gaiden for the original xbox. The 360/PS3 are many times stonger than the Wii. So even a game like Gears that uses less than 30% of the consoles potential is wayyy out of the Wii's league.

yeah 480i is what standard television is broadcast in 480p is enhanced defintion, which is like plugging in an svideo cable to a standard definition tv, it just sharpens it up a bit, 720p is TRUE HD along with 1080i.

There's actually other confirmation that MK8 might end up on Wii. In a fan interview over at mortalkombatonline, Ed Boon said they'd definitely be looking into WiiConnect24 in FUTURE MK games (since Armageddon wasn't going to feature it) and would consider it controls for MK8.

Don't forget Mark Reign also said he wouldn't suprised if a developer outside of Epic decided to tone down the engine to make it fit in Wii.

They are coming out with a MK game soon on the Wii. They will probably use that same engine, but name it the same as the 360/PS3 version. Epic has said that Unreal Engine 3 will not run on the Wii.

Well, I hope you're kidding as well here, 'cause that's just dead wrong ;). BTW, I don't own a Wii either, but I'm sure the Wii could get close to Gears of War graphics-wise, it just wouldn't run in HD (although 720p or maybe even 1080i would be possible regarding the hardware, the possible game wouldn't look nearly as good as in 480p) and would probably have smaller environments..

BTW, a lot of the graphical marvels of GOW are caused by this bump mapping...

So to end all these graphics comments: does the Wii have the same graphical capabilities as the PS3 and XBox 360?: NO

Would it be possible for the Wii be able to play games coming close to or rivaling the PS3/XBox graphics on 'normal televisions'?: YES (although this would be absolutely NOT possible when comparing them on HD sets).

Do Wii owners expect PS3/Xbox360 graphics?: NO

Question 1 is a hardware issue

Question 2 is a programming issue, because "graphics" is more than just hardware. Graphics are determined by the programming of the developer and the accessibility of the hardware...

Just look at what Rare did during the SNES era (Donkey Kong) and the N64 era and what Factor 5 did during the GC era.

Why is every one on Unreal Engines Nuts for.. I think that engine blows personally and Mark rein hates Nintendo with a passion. I could care less about his Unreal engine..

Besides Red Steel used the unreal engine and it looked ok.. But i rather people start using other Engines besides Unreal Engine.. Imagine what Red steel would have looked like if it used Capcom Engine for RE4....

I dont get what makes Unreal so much better then any one else Engine...

1) Some GC games (especially Factor 5) is a big fan) has normal mapping, which is one of the types of bump mapping. To my knowledge Mario Galaxy uses Normal Mapping as well.

2) Considering the overall 'internal hardware' picture, PS3 and XBox360 are not in the same league as the Wii, and as such it will never be comparable in the HD region. But I think the games for the Wii could look -as- awesome as well, given that that would be in 480p. A lot of effects can even be software emulated. However, due to the boundary conditions, something has to give, which is-as stated previously-  the resolution in the case of the Wii, and maybe the size of the environments as well.

3) So technically, the graphics won't be the same, but they could be the same in practice. BTW, I'm not bashing Gears of War (which I indeed don't own, but I've seen and played it) as its graphics look superb, and as I said, technically the graphics of the Wii will never be the same, but the human eye and mind do not see technical graphics, they only see the actual screen..

My grammar sucks ;) ...

And BTW, I don't think we will see this this year, I just state the possibility... of a great title...somewhere...sometime..on the Wii.

[QUOTE="jfkunrendered"]LOL!!!!! Did you seriosly just ask if a Wii game would be on par with Gears of War!??? I laugh...I laugh...the Wii cant even do bump mapping! COME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope you were just kidding!!!! It`ll probably use the Unreal Engine 2, not 3.jfkunrendered

So your telling me that the Wii can dish out games close to Gears? I take it you dont own a 360 or PS3? Just look at the final fight with General RAAM on and SD(thats what I use) and go play...whatever comes out this holiday for Wii....and tell me they are similar just do it! And the WII CANNOT DO BUMP MAPPING!!!!!! This is old news man. Just google it.

Go back to the 360 forums Paco... I personally don't mind if any games on the Wii use the Unreal 3 engine. it would be amazing but i'll get my fill of that engine when I upgrade my PC and buy Unreal Tournament 3

I think if they use the Unreal engine on ANY console, they should allow downloadable levels and MODs because it's so easy to do.

Ok....well let me say this...the Wii cannot do adv. bump mapping...which is a fact stated by Ubi....and I was trying to get what you are saying...but I still dont think there is any way a game the Wii can produce eye candy like the 360...and dont get me wrong, I know the wii will put some pretty stuff out there....but to say these future games will be comprable to Gears.....I mean, look at MP3, it looks just like Halo 2 to me.

Your fanboy is showing. Halo 2 was a great looking game and to say something like that shows you have never played it.....what the heck is this thread about again anyway? MK right?

The Unreal Engine would be awesome for the Wii. But, I won't truly be impressed until the Offset Engine is utilized for the Wii (Google "Project Offset"). It can produce graphics superior to Gears of War with hardware that was quite commonplace in 2005. It would be perfect for Wii devs.

Imo, MP2 looked as good as Halo 2, and Re4 better than both.

[QUOTE="GraveRIP"]Wow im sry to say but u r kinda slow. Thats games being released next month. Its not the same game that they are talking about. OMG im sry to say it but wow u r really slow it doesnt even say the game they are talking about is being released for the wii. And even if it did say so the unreal engine 3 would only apply to hd consoles.Sry again if i was alittle harshGraveRIP

Stop being an rude man, 480 p may not be HD but its nice espically since its maximazed at that resolution. Also the wii can run that engine just not in HD

Halo 2, on a graphical level, wasn't too far beyond Metroid Prime 2, or TimeSplitters: Future Perfect.

It was a joke numb-nuts. It's good looking, has fun multiplayer but is heavily overrated (not as much as its predesessor though) and I'll probably buy it when i inevitabley upgrade to Vista. Yes, this topic as about MK and Unreal! Unfortunately I have nothing more to say on either...

Ok...i`m not going to be seen in this thread anymore...the fanboyism is to crazy in here....Future Perfect looked....bad!!! MP2 was pretty good looking, but still, nothing like Halo 2.

My take, can the Wii handle GeoW? By ram alone, no. Can the wii handle GeoW in SDTV? Perhaps with compromises like lower draw distance, gimped particle effects, etc. with leet coding skills ala Factor 5 and Capcom's Re4.

If I remeber correctly, one of ID developers said that the CG could handle the engine better than the xbox if weren't for the RAM (24 vs 64).

Nothing really, I just personally find it easier to Multitask on Macs.
