I agree with you joshuarocker. I personally love how the 3D looks. There's so much whinning around a concept that it's pretty neat.
"lets add more visual depth to the games." People actually complain about that? I mean, I understand the headaches and such, but this is something that takes some getting used to.
When I bought the 3DS I knew the 3D would be second, gameplay first. haven't been disappointed so far. Ugh I strayed a lil far from the topic. Basically 3D is to make the graphics more beautiful and I think it does have appeal.
i think too many people have the impression that the 3D would have been blow your mind, figurines coming out of the screen 3D.
The thing is the 3D is something subtle. something nice and new to add to the detail of games. Its not a surprise that no game out currently truly unlocks the potential of the 3D because nintendo didnt even announce the system that long ago.
I am glad it isnt the pop out of the screen 3D. especially with a handheld, i dont want something that comes out and forces me to focus in and out and in and out of something too close.
Super street fighter 4 does the 3D in the way its supposed to. It makes it look like little figures are fighting in a box in your hand. I think too many naive people thought it would be like the characters coming out of the screen and fighting on your face.

I am not completely giving up hope on more depth immersion yet though. This is the first generation of 3DS games. Give developers some time to really get into this hardware and see what they can do with it.

definitely, i believe that more immersion is possible. afterall, when did the 3ds get announced? about a year ago. not exactly a lot of time to put out a quality new ip game, so i am expecting more :D
I think these people need to play the 3DS without the 3D on for a while. I did that, and then I realized how flat everything looked. The 3D effect may not revolutionize gameplay, but it gives the games body and a nice sense of depth and dimension. JustPlainLucas
i think 3Ds Revolutionized visuals imo...the only thing better would be HD graphics with 3d...but from now on i want 3d standard on my handhelds..
once you go 3d you dont go back.
If 3D is just use for looks "added depth" then is kinda boring -> SF4, Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars...if 3D effect is use for something - like the AR card shooting game..then its great.
I agree that the 3D effect doesn't always need to affect gameplay, but there are some aspects of it that do enhance gameplay. Pilotwings is the only game I have, so I'll use that to illustrate.
The first one is obvious.... Depth perception helps with any game that has you line up your character with any object in 3D space, whether it be flying by a pillar or jumping to hit a coin block. I won't dwell on that because it's easy to understand.
The second one never occurred to me until I played Pilotwings, and even then, it didn't hit me until I had spent several hours with it. If you have the 3D effect all the way up (or up enough), focusing on the background causes your character in the foreground to double. At first I thought this was kind of annoying (and it's the reason that so many people say they need to put the 3D effect almost all the way down for PW), but then I realized that it makes your character transparent at will. Focus on your character and he's solid; focus on the background and he's transparent. No more moving your character out of the way just to see what's directly behind him.
I think one reason some people are missing these things is that they REALLY want the 3D effect to look as familiar as possible. Since we're used to seeing everything on the screen at once, it's pretty jarring to suddenly have whatever you're not focusing on turn into a double image when there are major distances at play. But that's how our eyes work in reality. Focus on your finger five inches from your face and everything in the background will double; focus on the background and your finger will double. It takes awhile to get used to that on a 3D screen, but once you do, it becomes just as natural as regular vision.
When i buy a 3ds i will be using 2d way more than 3d since the viewing angle has to be perfect on 3d and i move around a lot while playing.Nick3306Yeah, that's a major deterrent. Proved problematic in Pilotwings, as I tend to move it a bit when I steer.
yeah, it's got me considering a 3D TV purchase, but I hate the fact that I'd have to use those damned glasses.i think 3Ds Revolutionized visuals imo...the only thing better would be HD graphics with 3d...but from now on i want 3d standard on my handhelds..

Haha. Me too. When I enter drift turns in Ridge Racer 3D the screen becomes a blurry mess because I always end up moving the handheld about.
As long as 3d affect does not replace gameplay? When game develpers are designing they must put gameplay 1st, anyone remember the early Amiga games? All visual affect and rubbish gameplay.
Well, it's seen as a gimmick because it doesn't appeal to everybody. Not everybody can see it (myself included), it sucks up battery power, and it's just not that revolutionary. 3D will either just die out or they'll come out with a way for everybody to see it. It's a good thing it has the 3D slider though, so people can enjoy it even if they don't like the 3D.DevilBorgFirst I'm sorry you can't experience 3d content. I realize this is a problem for some and it sucks for those people. . . . However. . . . . Just because a certain segment of the population can't see a desired affect doesn't mean it's a gimmick. Color TVs weren't a gimmick because some people are color blind, surround sound isn't a gimmick because some people can't hear. I am glad they provided the 3d slider so that a broader Audience could experience the next round of games however.
