We are new to the Wii and have only Wii remotes & nunchuks right now. I would like to download Super Mario World & I understand that I need a "classic" controller for that. I also want to get Zelda Windwaker. So, do I need a Gamecube controller for Windwaker? I read reviews on Amazon for various Wii controllersand am not sure I understand all this correctly. Would a controller such as "Shockwave Wireless 2.4GHZ Controller" work for both of these (as well as for any VC or gamecube games that need controllers)? It looks like there are two different brands for this same typeof controller on Amazon (Phantiq & Nyko). Since we are new to video gaming, I would like to get the minimum types of controllers needed for any kind of games on the Wii!

Also, for Windwaker, do I just buy a gamecube version of the game and it will just play in the Wii? TIA!!

if u want to play GC games then u will need a GC controller and memory card. as for different brands...if it says its a GC controller or memory card then it will work in ure wii (or to be more accurate..itll work as well in ure wii as it would in ure GC....some 3rd party stuff can be lemons.....they break easily). if ure not confident with what ure buying from a 3rd party manufacturer then stick to offical nintendo stuff. its more expensive but its basically guranteed to work. if u get a GC controller then u wont need a classic controller. all VC games will work with a GC controller as far as i know. the only downside is that, unless u buy a wireless GC controller, ure controller will be tethered to the wii. as for playing the GC game..once u have inserted ure GC controller and memory card into the side of ure wii..just plonk in the GC disc into the wiis disc drive and start it like u would start a wii game. GC discs are a different size but dont worry, the wiis drive is designed to take both. u dont neven need to worry about putting it in the center...the drive will take care of positioning.

All gamecube game work on the Wii. All of them. So, if you buy Wind Waker (the best game of the world, by the way) you just insert in in the disc slot and you are ready. You need a memory card to save your progress for gamecube games. I recommend to get the Nintendo memory cards, not other brands, as these may break, get stuck on the wii, or the data saved on them could be erased. Just look for the golden nintendo seal of quality for the games, systems and accessories you are buying. Now, for the controllers, the best thing you can do is to get a Gamecube controller. Is just the best choice. To play gamecube games, you need a gamecube controller. You can't play gamecube games with the classic controller or the wii controllers. For the virtual console games you can use the classic or gamecube controller. You say that you want to have the least amount of controllers, so just get a gamecube controller, as they work for every virtual console game. Just make sure in the official nintendo gamecube controller, as other ones may not work well, or you could damage your system. Is just safer to buy the original controllers and games.

So, now I have a question about buying Zelda Wind Waker...are there any differences between the different packages? I see two different versions where one version says "players choice". TIA!

"Player's Choice" just means that the game has sold a certain amount of copies (usually over 1 million or so), and therefore it's being sold for a reduce price, usually $19.99. It's the same deal as the "Greatest Hits" label that appears on some PS2 games. The game content for "Player's Choice" titles is exactly the same, though, so it doesn't matter which one you get. If they're different prices, just get the cheaper one.

Well, now that I have had my Wii for almost 2 whole weeks, I am learning a bit about games, etc. but now have another related question :). It seems like older cube games are being released in Wii format (Pikmin, MarioKart, etc or Ocarina of Time on VC). I wouldn't mind waiting for a Wii version of Zelda Windwaker if it ever will be done. Is there a way to find out if Nintendo will be doing this one for Wii? I tried researching the answer but am confused by this type of thing (we have never had a video game system). I don't want to start getting Gamecube games just for the Wii if I can get them in an eventual Wii verson. Again, TIA!

Bumping - to add to my confusion : I just found Punch Out on WiiWare and now a disc version has just come out for Wii. So, will these older Nintendo games eventually become available on a Wii disc format? Now I am wondering if I should just not get Ocarina on VC and not get Windwaker Gamecube if I can just wait for a regular Wii release (a disc so that I will not need a memory card or a Gamecube or classic controller)?? I have a bunch of good games already to try so am not in a rush to get these but do want them eventually for the Wii. I am getting more confused ! Any info for me?

TIA!

The Punch Out that will be released is a completely new game, sort of a remake of the original. The one on the VC is the original NES version. There will not be a release of Ocarina of Time for the Wii (nor will be Windwaker get a Wii release). If you want to play those two games, you could get the special edition of the Windwaker for the Gamecube which includes a bonus disc featuring Ocarina of Time. It's quite hard to find though, so it would most likely be cheaper to get the regular version of the Windwaker and but Ocarina of Time on the VC.

Thank you so much! I guess I will invest in some Gamecube controllers& get the VC Ocarina & GC Windwaker now. My teenage son will beglad - he has been enjoying Twilight Princess.

Thanks again to everyone for answering my questions - it has been really helpful. I have never played video games before (I am 49) & am so surprisedby how much I've loved the Wii games so far...I am a boardgame player but my family doesn't always have time to play games & I don't like to play boardgames solitaire & have really liked playingWii games by myself. Just wish I had more free time :). I have also really fallen for Gold's Gym Cardio - very fun & tough!

Some Gamecube games will get an adaptation to the wii. These games are almost exactly the same, but with wii controls for the whole game. There are 3 games available now: Pikmin, Mario Power Tennis and Donkey Knog Jungle Beat. Nintendo will release Pikmin 2 with new play control and the two gamecube Metroid Prime Games.

Now, Mario Kart Wii is NOT a new play control game. It's a complete new game of the mario kart series made for the wii. if you connect the wii to the internet, you can download games from the wii shop channel. These include original games made for the wii (which are called wiiware games) and the "virtual console" games which are games from Nintendo past systems that you can download for less than $10, for all the gamers who couldn't play these classics. Ocarina of Time is a virtual console game, not a New Play Control! game. Nintendo will NOT release a new play control game for ocarina or wind waker. So I really recomend to get Wind Waker for gamecube.

Punch Out!! for Wii: This one is not a vitual console game and it's not a new play control! game. You can find the first two punch out game for downlaoding on the virtual console. The punch out for wii is a complete new game of the punch out series, sort of a remake of the original game that was released on the "nintendo entertaning system" (and that you can find it now on the virtual console for $5).

Extra info:

- VC = virtual console

- NPC! = new play control! series

- OoT = The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

- WW = The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker

- NES = Nintendo Entertainment System. (the first nintendo console).

- SNES = Super Nintendo Entertainment System

- N64 = Nintendo 64

- GCN = Nintendo GameCube

Thanks for the additional info, Rod90! I just ordered two wireless GC controllers, a memory card for GC games, a SDHC card for VC and WiiWares (I already have Helix & World of Goo!), and a copy of WindWaker. When the controllers arrive, I will get OoT. I should be set!

Gailp333, I said before that Nintendo would release NPC! of the first 2 metroid prime games. They will not do that now, as they decided to release Metroid Prime Trilogy that will include Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (the Metroid Prime for Wii). The best thing is that this great pack will cost just $50. 3 games for the price of 1.

Also remember that to save GC games you need a GC memory card, not an SD card.

I know this questions been answered already. But no man, no. Link to the past is the best game in the world.

Someone is stuck in the past :P. Only blind love would let someone like Link to the Past better than Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, or Wind Waker. Maybe AS much, but not more.

Each Zelda has its charm... But Wind Waker was superb.

Not saying Link to the Past was better, but overall it is my favorite Zelda of all time. Link's awakening get second with Ocarina claiming third. Big difference between "better" and "favorite" there.

It's google. Blame google. I usually don't post in these and report them, but I just want to put that out there.
