Also, do the items fight for Link? No, he weilds them.

As in Majora's mask we've seen Link fight hand-to-hand. Just like anyone else, if Link has the choice to use a weapon he will. As ZumaJones said he can take tons of hits like no other.

Think of the fact that he finds random items all over the world and uses them to his every possible advantage. He's a resourcesful genius.
