I picked up DQIX for cheap a few days ago, and have barely been able to put it down (just long enough to get my finals work done!). Anyway, now I am wondering what game should follow (or try and follow), this amazing RPG. I know there are some other DQ games on the platform, but I have to admit I will miss the battle animations, so I'm not sure jumping straight into those will be the best bet. I was thinking maybe FFIV, or Might and Magic if I can find it...

What do you guys think?

Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days. I was surprised it managed to fit onto a DS cartridge.

the thing is that I never beat KH1 or 2, though I did start both of them. I got the final boss of KH1 and couldn't beat him (I was like 12), and I got to the middle of KH2 and lost my PS2, so I just kind of never went back to it. Will I be able to follow/care about the story with only a VERY basic understanding of either narrative?

The plot of the KH series is always confusing no matter even if you play them all. It's meant to be. You don't really need to play the first 2 (I didn't until later) to understand it

One of the Pokemon games. I compare DQIX to Pokemon in that there is a huge amount of content and customability in each game if you choose to work for it. Content wise, I'd say DQIX is the best value on the system.

FFIV is great but it's a heavily story driven game and doesn't have much to do afterwards aside from grinding for ultra rare items and a New Game+ feature. (That sadly isn't as awesome as it could have been.)

I actually prefer story driven games over games with basically no story. So that might work out...

How much did you pay for it? I found one on craigslist in my area for $15, and its a sealed copy. Thats a pretty cheap right? I might get it tonight.

Maybe wait for that new remake of the original Dragon Quest Monsters! Assuming they will localize it here, I'm leaning towards yes. Maybe try out DQ 4, 5 and 6 for the DS if you don't mind a slightly older style of RPG gameplay. DQIX's style reminded me a bit of DQVIII in terms of gameplay so give that a shot if you feel like getting some dust off the ol' ps2!

Got DQ IX first and played it. Loved it so much I bought IV. Different graphics but a better story. Then I got V - which I absolutely loved. My favorite of all the games. Currently I'm half way through XI.

The graphics are considerbly different from IX but all 3 have GREAT storylines. (Storylines are important to me. Without a good story, it's just grinding.)

In all honesty, if you love Dragon Quest IX it has enough content to last you many 100s of hours. That is if you can get into the many side quests, class system, Grotto plunging, and item forging.
