There have already been more models of the Nintendo 3DS than of any other Nintendo handheld in history. With so many models, you'd think that there is a clear progression of improvement over the years, but surprisingly enough, that is not actually the case- the models are all each differentiated enough that you can make a compelling case for each of them, except for maybe the original.

Here's a summary of each model to better help you vote:

NINTENDO 3DS:

  • Original launch model
  • Features autostereoscopic 3DS
  • Small form factor
  • Comes with 2GB storage included
  • Comes with a telescopic stylus
  • 3-5 hours of battery life
  • Cramped ergonomics
  • Unstable 3D with a narrow sweet spot

NINTENDO 3DS XL:

  • Bigger screens compared to original model
  • Slightly better 3D quality
  • 4GB of included storage
  • More spread out ergonomics
  • 5-7 hours of battery life
  • Low pixel density
  • Too big to be truly portable
  • Unstable 3D with a narrow sweet spot

NINTENDO 2DS:

  • Comfortable form factor and ergonomics
  • Extremely cheap
  • Comes with 4GB of included storage
  • Most durable 3DS model
  • Lack of clamshell design limits portability
  • No autostereoscopic 3D whatsoever
  • Only mono sound output (requires headphones for stereo sound)
  • 4-6 hours of battery life
  • Screen size reverts to the same as that of the original 3DS model

NEW NINTENDO 3DS:

  • Same form factor and size as the original model
  • Battery life 4-6 hours
  • 4GB of included memory
  • Changeable faceplates add to further customization
  • Super Stable 3D
  • Highest pixel density of any 3DS model
  • Added controls via the C stick, and ZL/ZR buttons
  • Small form factor can lead to cramped ergonomics

NEW NINTENDO 3DS XL

  • Same form factor as the 3DS XL
  • Massive screens, using IPS panels (highest quality screens)
  • 4GB included memory
  • Super Stable 3D
  • 5-8 hours of battery life
  • Added controls via the C stick, and ZL/ZR buttons
  • More spread out ergonomics
  • Massive size means low portability
  • No changeable faceplates
  • Extremely low pixel density

Which one is the very best model, then? It seems like on paper, the New 3DS would be the best, but because that did not launch here in North America, I can't actually say for sure. Of the ones I used? New 3DS XL wins out for sure, so that gets my vote.

How about you all?

I would go with the first one, since I've had that one for years.

The 2DS feels best in my hands. I find the original 3DS to be the prettiest of the bunch. However, I'd go with the New 3DS as being the best model. It's more powerful than the first, has more control options, and can still fit in your pocket. I never liked the XL models.

I have to go with the N3DS XL, so purdy. It also improves bout everything that it makes for a nice upgrade. Not something you must have to enjoy your games, but it helps some.

2DS. Its comfortable for long play sessions. I bet I could whip it at a wall full force and it stands a chance of surviving. Its extremely durable.

I still have my original 3ds, but I guess technically the N3ds is better. Never liked the XL versions, always felt too big to be portable and geared more for kids. Side note who is voting for the doorstop?

N3DS XL for me, but the face plates on the regular N3DS are pretty kool.

N3DS XL, after playing playing it on a big screen (for a handheld) not going smaller, though the changeable faceplates are really cool and I want that Xenoblade faceplates

Can I ask how is the New 3DS XL not better than everything else? There's no question.

I am holding out for a New 3DS the regular one with interchangeable faceplates, But Nintendo has not released it in North America. This is the best version of the 3DS and it is not offered in North America. Sigh....

I suppose I will have to import one. But I won't be able to transfer over of my 3DS stuff. Since Nintendo 3DS models are region locked. I just don't want the New 3DS XL.

My only wish is that they make a New 2DSXL. Put a full slide pad for the right stick, split the big L/R buttons for a ZL/ZR and it would be an incredible handheld. I mean it would be huge but awesome.

Smaller model *new* 3DS

I've had the original, XL and now the smaller *new* 3DS. The larger screen on the XL models makes everything look a bit blocky and low res, much prefer my *new* model in black with Goomba face plates and the Snes coloured buttons. Stable 3d is worth the money alone really

Easily XL > standard, and new > old. So New 3DS XL.

Suprised no one went for the XL model.
