I notice that there are three main Ds out or coming out soon. So which one is the best for someone looking for the first Ds. A lot of reviews that I have read only really talk about upgrading not including people that are looking to get their first Ds.

I am talking about the DSi, DS lite, and the DSi LX.

I want to be able to connect to wifi with the Ds, so I can trade Pokemon with other people and maybe even battle people.

Which one functions the best in ur opinion? I heard that the lites buttons are less than stellar.

Second of all what are some games that you would recommend?

I plan to pick up Pokemon Heart Gold and possibly Pokemon Platinum.

Thanks for your help.

If you like Pokemon, I would think the DS lite would be the obvious choice.

You can play gba games that way, and I for one quite frankly still play my gba games. DS lite has the brightest setting and is my preferred method of playing the other handheld's games.

You could get the DSi and DSi XL, but they're essentially useless. Their camera isn't that great, and while you may enjoy the DS ware, it still hasn't lived up to its potential.

Especially when there's talks of a DS 2 in a few years, a DS lite is the most bang for your buck.

All the ds's can connect to wi-fi. and I'm pretty sure the 3 ds's mentioned have the same buttons. if u want to play gba games too, get the lite. if u want to play dsiware games, get the dsiXL (or the normal dsi if u need better portability) as for recommending games. check out the recommendation thread's first post, it shows genres and good games under each genre. or tell what kind of games/genres u like, and I'll recommend some =)

I don't have many GBA games. So that is not a factor in buying a DS. If I get the Ds lite will I still be able to trade pokemon with people. I heard some where that the Ds lite can only connect to certain things. Not sure if true.

I like:

platformers

RPGS

shooters

Open world games ( like GTA)

This is kind of an impulsive buy, but some of the games on there look cool.

Lite. Especially if you're going to be playing Pokemon.

The GBA slot is very useful.

If you want to move your gba pokemon from your pokemon games like ruby/sapphire/emerald or firered/leafgreen, then you use the slot for that. However, many of the pokemon from those games are in the pokemon games HG/SS, so IMO it's not such a big deal. In terms of wifi, the ds lite should be the same for teh dsi. it depends on your budget. if you want to go cheaper, do the lite. if you have some more money, go for the dsi, which has slightly bigger screens, louder speakers, extra brightness setting, and c lickier buttons and d pad. However, if you can a little more, you can get the dsi XL, which i'm not sure about, but i know it has very big screens.

And again on pokemon, pokemon will work just fine on any DS.

yeah the ds lite should work fine with trading and everything. I recommend Castlevania games(3 on the ds) which are platformers/but u can level up so they could be considered an rpg too. and obviously Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars for your open world ds gaming. As for shooters, the ds doesn't have too many good ones. Metroid Prime Hunters is popular, I like Dementium the Ward, and Moon.

It really depends bud...

If you want to play old gba games, then the ds lite is the one you want since it's the only DS model left with a GB slot. The DSi and DSi XL are pretty much the same, except that the DSi is meant more for portability, and the XL is meant more for sitting at home and playing. Where will you be playing your DS the most? If you say on the go, then your best bet is the DSi, but if you're like me and will choose to play your DS mostly at home, then the XL is better since the screens are bigger (at the expense of the light weight and portability of the original DSi model). The perfect DS is different for everyone, since everyones situation is different. Good luck!

Wow I was just about to make a thread exactly like this. I was hoping that I could get away with going the cheap route and I'm very glad to find out I can! :)

The Lite is for me. I'm a huge Pokemon Fan. :)

ThanksFoxh0und666.

I see myself mostly playing a ds mostly at home. However, I think I will probably get the regular Dsi.

I like to play my gameboy laying down on my bed, and I see myself doing that with a ds.

BTW... there's a new DS to be released. it's the new gen, so you might want to wait for an official release date before getting a DSi (which i still think it's a nice idea)

it's probable that, if you grab a DSi now, you'll still have a whole year to play. on the other hand, if you wait for the 3DS, you won't have to switch systems so soon and will still have access to the whole DS library, and most likely all the DSi's functions.

I'd wait till the 3DS comes around, you're gonna feel ripped off if you by a DS right now.

Because there aren't dozens of excellent games on the DS right now... right? Because it's not about the games; it's about having the latest and greatest.

lol i actually agree with you. Like I said before guys, there's always going to be something better coming out sooner or later. The 3DS is probably going to be released Feb-Mar 2011, and imo at launch the systems are always horrible and usually take a while to hit their stride, not to mention the hefty price tag it's going to carry. I was literally about to pick up my phone and cancel my pre-order for the XL, but decided not to and am going to wait until the 3DS gets a good library and smaller price first. But that's just me. Also, for anyone buying a DSi/DSi XL soon, I'm sure gamestop will have some trade in deal.

first, (s)he is the topic creator, and second, it still applies to "what is the perfect DS for someone looking for their first model?" question, as (s)he is wondering if the new generation will have backwards compatibility, which is a very important point to take in consideration when choosing whether to buy or not a new handheld when you know there's a new generation coming in a year. and to answer your question, yes, it does have backwards compatibility. it's one of the very few things that have been confirmed by nintendo themselves right now. according to them, it has full BC to all DS and DSi games. how you transfer your downloaded games, i don't know. if the DSiWare will be available on the 3DS's online store, i don't know that either. but considering they emphasized on the "DS and DSi" part, i could pretty much assure you that the 3DS will still have 2 screens and 2 cameras, not to mention a similar button scheme.

Since you're not a fan of GBA games, the DSi is the system to get as long as you are aware of the $170 price tag.

$157 for white on Amazon... free shipping and no tax. A couple days ago it was $129 on Dell... with tax $140.

DS Lite is the best value right now. It is backwards compatible = more games.
