I'm not trying to degrade the game or anything, I just want to know what's so great about it. (I've never played it)

Please, when replying, follow this one rule:

DO NOT LET NOSTALGIA SPEAK FOR YOU!

I know that might be hard, but don't. Think if you were a person that never played the game before and compare it to more recent games like Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

If you play it you'll know, its basically everything you could love about an rpg but mario style, its even better than the paper marios in my opinion because it is a true rpg (when you go into a battle you can have 3 characters instead of 2 and it has a great story)

I'm partial to the steamy love scene involving Mario and Princess Peach at the beginning.

I've never played it, but Paper Mario, which is the greatest game ever, took a lot of elements from it as far as I know. It's cool in my book.

It was a great game back in its day and is still fun to play now. Super Mario RPG was a joint venture between Nintendo and Squaresoft (now SquareEnix) and they managed a very solid game. The story was well thought out. The battle engine was unique for its time (up to 3 characters with timed attacks to bolster damage). You controlled how you wanted your characters to develope as they leveled to a certain degree. The ending was cool to watch (espeically if you managed to get all the fireworks). Great game all around.

Exactly it's got all the addictive gameplay you'd find in a Final Fantasy but with Marios charm. The best way to describe it is that it's like a recces cup. Peanut butter and choclate 2 great tastes that taste great together.

If you're a fan of turn based RPG's and Mario it's a match made in heaven.

The only problem is that sales weren't so heavenly and that's why Nintendo ditched the structure after one experiment and decided to build in the direction of the Paper Mario series

The thing is, it's like comparing Super Mario 64 to the action platformers of today. A lot of its power comes from the impact it had on the industry and on the gamers themselves.

HOWEVER, I never played Super Mario RPG until I had a Gamecube and I STILL LOVED IT! Like TwilightSoldier said, it's got Square's powerful flair for RPGs combined with the charm and flexibility of the Mario universe. It's a good game. No, it's a great game. Just to complain when you don't find too many "unique" things. That's kinda like people who read Shakespeare and complain about all of the "cliches". The thing is Super Mario RPG, like Shakespeare, CREATED a lot of the cliches in their respective spheres.

Is there a focus on timing like in Mario and Luigi/Paper Mario? If not, then I'm not very interested. Those are the only RPG's that can hold my interest.

Yes there is. A LOT. That's where they got the Paper Mario timing mechanic idea from. It's the first TBRPG I know of that used that mechanic. I'm not saying it WAS THE first, but the earliest I can think of.

The Paper Mario games are the timing mechanic games.

That was to get the game accepted globally by more then just the strict turn based fans

So Super Mario RPG doesn't have ANY timing involved in the fighting at all?

The timing mechanic started with Super Mario RPG, at least with the Mario RPG games. Hit the attack button at just the right moment and you get a small boost to your attack and defense. One of the reasons why I loved (and still love) the game.

I wish the next Mario RPG was a direct sequel of Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Super Paper Mario was cool, but it couldn't hold a candle to the first Mario RPG.

Because Mallow is a tumor who thinks he is a frog and Geno is a possesed puppet who shoots bullets out of his hands. I dont hate Mallow but Geno is way cooler.

Yeah, I found the story and characters to be really memorable. My favorites? The Axem Rangers, but maybe that was because I was a kid and still enjoyed Power Ranger rip-offs.

Nothing can beat the 1337 hammer bros in Partners in Time.

Anyway, this game basically sounds almost exactly like Paper Mario, which means I should love it.

I recommend moving topics like this over to the Legacy Platforms forum. I do understand that Super Mario RPG has a strong possibility of appearing on Wii, but until it does this discussion is about a 12 year old game that plays on a 17 year old console.

NOTE: SMRPG used a very special chip for the SNES that acted as a second microprocessor, making it very hard to emulate, this is also why Kirby 3 hasn't come out yet on VC

Fine screw yourself out of an awesome game. See if I care. Sorry if I sound harsh but fanboys are people you will find for just about every good game. Deal with it! Btw what are you talking about? Where are these "Geno fanboys" I hear you talking about? I haven't seen/or heard any....

How long? Jeez...haven't played the whole way through in years. I know that when I was a kid, I tried to cap all my characters (lvl 99 is the cap, if I'm not mistaken), fight the secret boss (Crulex from a Final Fantasy game...forgot which one), and basically get every secret/cool thing in the game. I believe I spent most of a summer break playing the game.

I think you can probably beat the game fully in around 40 to 60 hours. That's if you spend some time with it. Play it quickly, I guess...30 hours? Maybe? Someone with a good memory wanna back me up on this?

Before I begin, I have to say that Super Mario RPG was introduced to me by a friend and brought me to the world of hardcore console gaming. It remains my one of my favorite games ever, yet it has been a while since i last played it. So forgive me if the nostalgia is heavy...im trying to tone it down

Super Mario RPG is a very basic RPG. If you've never played an RPG before, this is a great game to start off, as it's very basic as far as RPGs go. The thing is, it also has a great story, especially for a Mario game which, traditionally, has no plot at all. The characterizations are pretty cool, the game is well-written, and it's also a pretty funny game. It even introduced the concept of pressing a button during an attack to increase/decrease damage (depending on who was attacking who). If you're too old to be swayed by the Mario charm and/or are anexperienced RPG veteran, this most likely is NOT the game for you.

(Nostalgia back ON) I, however, loved this game to death. I am forever grateful to that friend for showing me this game and roping me in cause otherwise, I wouldn't be here talking to you on this nerdy as anything gaming website. NOW FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, PUT THIS BABY ON THE VC!! PLEASEEEEEEE

Seeing as im 14 (born in '93) Super Mario RPG was one of the first games i played and the first RPG's I played so I have amazing memories of that game. IMO Super Mario RPG is 10x the game Paper Mario is.

I played the game for the first time in 2000 and thought it was good but even back then it was not standing up well to the test of time. That does not mean it was a bad game, but many games just can't stand the test of time.(ex FF7 is just not as good as it once was)

Zomfg. Other than being the greatest game of all time, it combines two perfect entities: MARIO and SQUARE. This was and is my favorite game of all time and the pinnacle against which all games should be judged imo. I paid $70 for it way back more than 10 years ago and it's the best purchase I've ever made. Words are incapable of describing it. It's MUCH better than the Paper Mario series, and those games rock. We need it on the VC. I'll download it just to have it on my Wii, as I did with Sim City. GGOAT (Greatest Game of All Time)

because Squaresoft made it. it was nice to see mario and others in a square made game. I want to see either a sequel or a kingdom hearts type of game where everyone in the nintendo universe is involved. It should be an epic Final Fantasy type game, where the visuals would be mindblowing on the CG cutscenes. For nintendo fans like myself, it would be a dream come true. Nintendo and Square make this happen!!!!!:D

So...

Main quest = 30 hours

Getting all the secrets = 40-60 hours?

I'm partial to the steamy love scene involving Mario and Princess Peach at the beginning.Helen_Mirren

Oh wow, that actually made me laugh
