I know what you mean. I liked the D-pad on the GBA SP much better. The DS Lite's D-pad is simply too "mushy." You can't perform accurate button combos with any great precision. I tried to play Super Street Fighter 2: Turbo Revival for GBA on the DS, and my thumb was absolutely burning after just 3 fights. I would have liked that they retained the same D-pad as before.

I don't mind the DS D-pad. Now, the Wii's D-pad... terrible. I have to play NES games on my classic controller. Too small to be accurate.

I was disappointed that they decided to opt for a smaller D-pad for the DS Lite. That was one thing that they had on the DS fat that I liked. A minor gripe, but at the same time not so much. Have you noticed that the DS is lacking majorly in good fighting games?

The ONLY thing I don't like about DS lite is the d pad, it's just way too small. More often than not, I use my regular DS to play games that need more accurate control of the d pad.

The small d pad and overall small square shape give my hands the 'NES cramps'...bummed.

I completely agree. The new D-pad works fine, but it feels so uncomfortable. It is constantly moving around, and I sometimes even feel like I might break it. The SP had a D-pad that was stronger, and because of that I never play a GBA game on my DS unless I have to.

Nintendo is trying to strenghten your thumbs so when they release better games, you can play them with ease.

This is either

1. A joke (please be joking).

2. A fanboy's spin on an ongoing problem.

I don't doubt that that's possible, in fact it's probably already been done by somebody somewhere. If only I knew of a site where I could buy a DS Lite with the Phat's D-pad, I might consider buying it.

I wonder why they decided to make the change. I guess their thinking went like this, "It must be different in every way except for the screens." If they hadn't, I wouldn't be at risk of getting tendinitis everytime I played SF2 on my DS! I suppose if you're willing to take apart an old DS and your DS Lite, you could do it yourself with minimal fuss.

I tend to be very bad at doing things like that. I suppose I could do it myself, but I'm likely to render my DS completely useless if I try.

That last comment made about Nintendo's ideas to strengthen thumbs for future games. Awesome. I kinda respect you more for just saying that.

Being smaller than the original DS' d-pad, it does demand more pressure on its edges. As a result, it's a bit uncomfortable and more difficult to input precise diagonal directions (Animal Crossing and Metroid Prime comes to mind). Then again, not too many games demand you to input precise diagonal directions, so it's not too big of a deal.
