It uses Dual Layer DVD just like DVDs and the 360 except that the Wiis laser can't read DVD coding and not to mention that the drive isn't meant to spin constantly for hours. (Games only spin fastin intervals)

It's not the laser. The Wiicould play DVDs with just a firmware upgrade, but Nintendo would haveto pay a licensing fee to include DVD playback, and the fee would be passed onto us consumers.
Why the need for DVD playback at this point? Who doesn't have a DVD player that wants one by now? You can get cheap ones for $20 at Wal-Mart if you want a DVD player so bad. I don't get it.
I've been playing DVDs with my DVD player for years now. The time is already here! I'm glad I wasn't late to the game. But I'm sure wishing I could play them on my cell phone. That feature would make all the difference for me.
It would be nice, seeing how it would save an AV port in the back of the tv and all.
It is very possible for it to be done via a firmware update, I don't know why people say otherwise because you can already play dvd's via the gamecube mode homebrew.
Ok the Wii CAN play DVDs it just doesn't. Yeah I have a DVD player too but not in my room, where my wii is. Plus even i did get one itd be much more convienient to have 2-in-1 rather than getting an adapter or plugging and unplugging the AV cords. also if u only pay 20 dollars for a DVD player it will be a crappy one and not worth it. AAAAANND finally DVDs on Wii would be sweet because u can use the wiimote as a remote and feature selection would be a breeze with IR compared to any other DVD players(besides maybe PC)...so i think DVD playback would be sweet....thats what i feel like i had to say
Who needs yet another DVD player? I currently own more dvd players now (4) then I've owned VCR's....ever. I have a PS3, PS2, Cyberhome all region, and Panasonic region1.
whenever nintendo has time. right now they are too busy trying to make enough wiis for everybody right now cause it's selling like a mother. i say, whenever the sells of wiis go down a little bit.
