I haven't played the second Etrian Odyssey, but I'm pretty sure it's just as brutal as the first. Final Fantasy III so far isn't hard at all. The thing is, you can basically heal at a town and walk right back into the dungeon in Final Fantasy, where as in Etrian, the dungeon is a lot more convoluted, and a lot of dangerous in general. It's also harder to make money, which makes you buy your equipment more strategically rather than the normal Final Fantasy formula of walk into a town, get the best equipment, move onto the next dungeon.
Having said that, my experience with Final Fantasy III was not all flowers and happiness and sunshine. I was especially frustrated at the beginning because I kept getting killed by the monsters in the castle for some reason. And I was horribly underleveled for the first dungeon. And there's always a boss here and there that kills one of my characters. Overall though, Etrian by a far shot. It's brutal, but ultimately rewarding.
