Both are really great!
I have a lot of nostalgia for Mario 64, but I'm going with Galaxy as the better game.
I won't hesitate in saying that Mario 64 changed the gaming world by huge proportions. Galaxy was awesome, and it's very addicting and I love the gameplay, but I think on the grand scheme, 64 was epic. Probobly one of the top ten games of all time.

Alot of you should really take the nostalgia goggles off. Galaxy is easily the better game, it trumps 64 in aesthetics, music, controls, level variation, power ups, bosses, enemies, and just pure imagination. As far as difficulty goes, the only reason SM64 could be considered more challenging will ALWAYS be camera issues. I died more times than I can count due to solely the camera not being able to move to a logical viewpoint. Besides, the Super Mario Bros series will always be harder than anything in 3D Mario titles combined.
I was born and raised on the NES,I remember the N64 era quite well, and I can tell you this. While SM64 deserves a spot in history for its importance in gaming, Galaxy should always be remembered as the better game.
For it's time, Super Mario 64 definitely caused a bigger stir than Galaxy did but If you were to put them side by side today, Galaxy would destroy Mario 64.
In other words, Galaxy is the better game, 64 was more revolutionary.
I prefer Galaxy because I could never beat 64(never had the patience to get past 40 stars :/ )masou0049
but smg had 121 starts altogether and you needed 100 to beat the game how can you prefer smg over 64
Well, 64 has a huge disadvantage in that it is now old. At the time it was amazing, intuitive, and more fun than much else out there. I never completed it in its original form, but played through all 150 stars of the DS remake. If we were reviewing them the typical way we would break it down.
Name(Why rate this?): Obvious victory to Galaxy.
Sound 64: Good tunes and soundeffects. Mario's "oofs" can get a tad repetitive.
Sound Galaxy: Orchestrated songs that (Gasp?) don't cause mild insanity after long play sessions. Great simple sound effects give a feeling of actuall action. Winner!
Graphics 64: Great for its time, it featured large enviroments and some amazing 3D forms of familiar badguys.
Graphics Galaxy: Actually beatiful. The graphics are clean, crisp, and functional. The bosses, bad guys, and enemies look awesome, but don't distract from your goals. Winner!
Gameplay 64: Sharp controls, short learning curve, and brilliant levels to play through. This game offered an excellent expirience across man different worlds, ensuring that you never get bored(Actually, going up and down those staircases was a little bit boring.)
Gameplay Galaxy: Great controls coupled with excellent animations give you a sense of actually controlling Mario. The level designs are intuitive, yet varied. Winner!
The Winner is Galaxy! (Nobody saw that coming.)
If you consider the impact that had in their own times however, 64 blows Galaxy away.
Sunshine.

GASP i thought i was the only one. really i don't know why people hate this game (from what i heard)
but Sunshine = SMG > SMDS > SM64

This. When compared directly against eachother, it's no doubt that almost everyone will agree that Super Mario Galaxy is the better game. As well it should be-it had a decade+ to refine the 3D platforming formula. However, when looking at the history of gaming, Super Mario 64's importance to our hobby is light years ahead of what Galaxy could ever hope to accomplish. Super Mario 64 basically pioneered the 3D platformer, and got it surprisingly right on the first try.
So yeah, Galaxy is "the better game" by today's standards because it can accomplish bigger and better things on newer hardware. I'm not saying it isn't an amazing game, because it is. The importance of SM64 to the gaming industry can not be understated, though.
