Mario and it's not even close.
To me Link is Mario's red haired stepchild that's never invited to any family outings.

well, the top game in the gaming history of gamerankings.com is a zleda game.

And the mascot for all of gaming is Mario.

Huh? Mario might be the mascot of Nintendo, but Zelda is crown jewel of all their franchises. Have you heard of Link to the Past and Ocarina of Time? They are two of the greatest games of all time.

You are absolutely right. Well said.I like both...but I think that I rather go with Mario. He's still my 3rd fav char, tho.Fav char is Snake and 2nd is Sonic (he's cool, even if some of the games kinda sucked).
Also,I Super Mario is kinda more fast paced than Zelda (Super Mario doesn't have puzzles...atleast not hard ones :P)
That's hard. I'm a huge Zelda lover...but I picked up SMG today and immediately fell in love with it. It beats DOWN LoZ: TP.
But, eh, I dunno.
Zelda games are more fun than Mario games.
Although I really enjoyed beating Galaxy recently, there was little depth to the story and it wasn't a true adventure like Zelda is.
Zelda FTW.
A lot of Zelda fanboys.
The only advantage Zelda has over Mario is that it is more critically acclaimed. Mario sells better. Zelda sells around 3-5 million on average, with OoT being at 7 million, Mario games usually get 7 million easily (exception was Sunshine at like five million but that was mostly due to the system's poor sales). But SMG will probably get ten million easily and NSMB is at like 16 million. Actually, the only title of the Zelda series that has any commerical important to Nintendo was Wind Waker, as it helped with the GCN's poor sales. Otherwise Nintendo could have gotten by fine without the Zelda series. I know you want to deny it, but believe me, they didn't really need the series. I know you fanboys want to dney it, but. Mario Party DS has almost beaten Twilight Princess in sales, so that should say something about how importat the Zelda series is to Nintendo from a commercial standpoint.
Super Mario by a longshot.

So basically your saying that the only thing Mario has over is Zelda is better sales.
So Mario games sell better, but Zelda games are better. That's basically what you just said. And it's true.
I love Mario, good times but Zelda is the winner
Zelda has sword fights and dungeons and side quests (the extra 60 stars really don't count), and a MUCH more interesting story
Zelda is more cinematic by nature and I love that. I love the epic feel you get when playing the game especially on something like the jousting match on the bridge. Oh god when I did that I had a nerdgasm it was just so freaking cool. Plus boss fights in Zelda are waaaaay cooler.
I'll take Volvagia over Bouldergeist anyday.
Zelda. They're both great, obviously...but I like games with atmosphere, Zelda has tons and Mario has very little. Plus OoT is one of my all time favs.
Although I do think it's about time to take Zelda in a bit of a new direction. It's getting a little stale.
Zelda games got surpased a decade ago.

A decade ago, OoT the released and revolutionized the genre completely and quickly became the most critically acclaimed game of all time and is still the highest rated game of all time. What games surpassed Zelda a decade ago or anytime between then and now?

Exactly my point.
That was the last time Zelda was the king of it all in that genre, now it gets beat all the time by adventure games that follow the same sorts of themes.
Mario is still the king of his genre. Mario has always been the king of his genre.

You never answered my question. What same-genre games have surpassed Zelda?

If we go with the whole medieval layout there's games like Elder Scrolls and Fable. When you think of the gaming landscape with those games they come to mind.
If you just want to go straight action adventure then there's a slew.
Mario on the other hand has had his fair share of contenders (most notably Sony with the Jak series and Ratchet and Clank) and still comes out on top. He's the defining character of the platforming genre and still rules the roost. Even now with his game being on "inferior hardware" to some.
