Who is going to pick up Tales of the AByss?

With the bad reviews (Seems harsh) on IGN and GS, it makes me wonder if the game won't be awesome. But I know a lot of people love it and I loved Tales of Symphonia and to a lesser extent, Vesperia. I can't imagine I will be dissapointed with ToA if I love those games. I just find it strange that IGN's reviewer acts like the game has aged horribly when I think I would love ToS to this day.

Last gen, Xplay said it was terrible so I avoided it. I'm not making that mistake again. I don't listen to Western website reviews when it comes to JRPGs anymore. I can't wait to get it.

It came out in Australia over a month ago and I love it. If it makes you feel better I have the exact same feelings with Symphonia and Vesperia. It took me a little bit longer to get engrossed in Tales of the Abyss than others, but once I got past a certain point I couldn't put it down. The 3D effect isn't too great though, but its not necessary.Fire_Emblem_RD

Is it what I would expect from a Tales of game? Or at least from ToS and ToV :P. I liked ToS more than V, though ToV had its things it did a bit better. I just love all the little hidden sidequests and items and so on. There is so much to do in ToS that you wouldn't even realize. I love a good JRPG like this, Baten Kaitos, and Paper Mario.

I actually didn't like Tales of Symphonia all that much. The plot was holey, the graphics sub-par, and the presentation of every detail was really... bad. It would have made a better movie than game x 10.

But, I have a good feeling about Tales of the Abyss so I will probably pick it up after the price drops a bit.

Will definitely get this(must support the Tales series), but not right now. Too many games out right now that I have yet to play.

Just to let you know, Tales games usually become pretty rare after the first month and then pretty much raise in price by the people who bought several copies at launch for this very reason. If you want it I would pick it up day one rather than chance paying even more for it if you find a copy. Just thought I would make sure you know thats a common thing with this series.

Just to let you know, Tales games usually become pretty rare after the first month and then pretty much raise in price by the people who bought several copies at launch for this very reason. If you want it I would pick it up day one rather than chance paying even more for it if you find a copy. Just thought I would make sure you know thats a common thing with this series.

There a loads of used copies of ToS at my GS just sitting there?? I'd rather wait for a discounted price or not buy it at all. As I said, I didn't see the greatness of ToS and apparently this one is not nearly as good. Whatever that means.

Definitely picking this one up. I didn't complete the PS2 version and (for some reason) got rid of it. I know that this game is nowhere near as good as ToS or especially ToL (Tales of Legendia, which I played for 35 hours straight) but this will be my chance to complete the story.

I have it pre-ordered (never played Abyss), but I'm far more interested in Graces F. I'm mostly just buying it out of obligation because it'll encourage them to localize more games. I'm not even confident that I'll genuinely enjoy the game, but eh. I've had plenty of fun times with every game I've ever played, including the ones that I think are terrible overall. No harm done.

If everyone comes together to let Namco Bandai see some decent numbers, then maybe they'll consider giving us Xillia. I definitely want to contribute to that cause (given how interesting Xillia is to me). I hope it goes well for Tales of the Abyss and that goes triple for Tales of Graces F.

Very interested in it. Someone tell me why I should buy it! Why is it so good?

It's alright man, I was mostly being sarcastic and poking fun at people that really think like that. I wasn't trying to accuse you of anything. It just seems like people treat scores between 6 and 7 as horrible, instead of treating them as 'above average' and 'good' .

To stay on topic, lets take a look at the scores that both versions of Tales of the Abyss have gotten on 2 major ranking sites.

The original version has a score of 78 - based on 22 Critics

The 3DS version has a score of 76 - based on 23 Critics

On GameRankings:

The original version has a score of 79.95% - based on 22 reviews

The 3DS version has a score of 77.42% - based on 12 reviews

Does a difference of 2 points truly mean that the 3DS version is significantly worse?

This is why I ignore review scores 9 times out of 10 (haha, get it?:P), because they're never a good way to judge a game. I feel that it's always better to read a review in full to see all the pros and cons, rather than taking the score attached to them at face value.

Oh wow. I thought ToA was more highly acclaimed like ToS was. I guess I was wrong :P. I hear a lot of fans praising it as one of the best ones, and up there with ToS, so if that is true I will definitely get it.

I don't think it has aged badly either, overworld is lacking detail but it all looks nice enough other than that.

If you want a solid Tales game for the 3DS definitely pick this up.

Yeah I loved both ToS and ToV, but the characters, story, scenes and more in ToS just clicked with me better, though a little cheesy and cliche at times no doubt. Both are awesome games and if ToA can match either I will pick it up day one. I love all the sidequests and hidden stuff. There is so much to do in the game its insane. It is a big reason I love JRPG's like it, Baten Kaitos and Paper Mario. SO many awesome unique items to find and quests to do. The thing that makes them so great is they usually feel so different and the reward is almost always something worthwhile and special. I feel like some games do sidequests and you get some more money or whatnot, but getting a new rare item like a badge in Paper Mario, or a sweet weapon in ToS is just awesome.

Holy cow, is the game out in NA right now!? I though it came out in like a week, but Amazon says its out and I can get it tomorrow :P. I just might need to pick this up.

How frequent are save points in the game? I've played plenty of Tales games so I know the general structure but one problem I can see this one having being a portable game is that there aren't many save points in dungeons for short bursts of gameplay.

I would imagine the same as any of them, since they didn't change it and it was originally on PS2. Save points were often enough in ToS and ToV, so I am not worried.

I just bought it today on my lunch break and have been playing it all night!! I dont know why people are hating on this game. I found the 3D very decent and the gameplay addictive. Maybe I love it because I never played a Tales game before? It kind of sucks though that there is notreally any JRPG's on the horizon so other than old DS games I don't know what I'll play after this.

For some reason I never played the PS2 version of this game even though I LOVE the Tales series< Ibought this today and have played it for 6 hours. It's well worth it if you love the Tales games. Dont know if it's worth a buy if you've already played it though.

Tried to play it on PS2 but, after beating Vesperia before it, the loading times just killed it for me. Once I learned of the 3DS port I quit the game just 5 hours in and been waiting for it ever since. It's arriving around here in the next couple of days but in niche quantity as the store clerk told me. Solved this issue by registering a copy.

Expecting to get it Saturday if not sooner. Heck, maybe even tonight.

No load times to be found in the 3DS version, thank god!

I can hardly put the game down! Can't believe I missed out on this game last gen on PS2.
