That way they wouldn't spend money on that and spend on improving the graphics and stuff like that.swrowe78They can, the pro controller for the WII U shows that, they just don't want to. I'm glad Nintendo is trying new things instead of sticknig to the same old boring formula for consoles.
If nintendo did that then we'd have 3 identical consoles to choose from. It's good that Nintendo is creating its own unique identity.
That way they wouldn't spend money on that and spend on improving the graphics and stuff like that.swrowe78Why you even care? if you're looking for a "proper" controller then you're looking at the wrong console maker. Nintendo is for innovation, for doing the same as always you can have any other console. For top of the graphics get a PC BTW, all the console makers have non-"proper" controllers too (Move, Kinect), and even in a PC you can use motion, cameras, tablets, etc. as an input media. Finally, Wii had the CC(Pro), and now there will be the Pro Controller too, so there you have it. Not happy even with that, then don't be it
Because gameplay is most important?
Because they can do both at the same time? Who are you to say they need to make a console that is X times more powerful when they can make one just as good that is Y times more powerful?
Like it or hate it, the controller has become Nintendo's thing. For the new gen, it's a $130 controller that you can't replace if it breaks.

Me. I've been through several. I actually haven't broken one in a long time until Max Payne 3 cost me a PS3 controller. Trust me, these Wii U pads WILL be broken. From what I understand, though, you'll be able to buy separate pads at Nintendo's online store. Not true. Of course they'd offer an option to replace broken gamepads. It costs money, but when has smashing something ever been covered by warranty without some extra care plan? I'm sure if it's a hardware failure, they won't charge. Nintendo's customer support has been great by every account I've seen during the Wii era for problems that aren't the user's fault.

But seriously, who breaks controllers anyway?

That way they wouldn't spend money on that and spend on improving the graphics and stuff like that.swrowe78They have already said they aren't fully into graphics driven like their 2 competitors. Their WiiU gamepad controller has been their proper controller since Wii's pro controller...N64, & GC times had weird controllers (imo), it went back to norm/proper when they release classic controller pro for Wii. The WiiU gamepad is just an evolution of that. Just because there's a screen its not a proper controller?..well they've covered that as well with controller pro.
Well, in my opinion, the GC pad would be close to perfection if they tweaked it a little and yes, they could exchange the expensive pad for more hardware muscle.
However, I also think that if they went with that approach, the Wii U (or however they would call it) would not be much different from the other consoles.
Basically you would be looking at a little prettier games than on the current consoles but still not up to PC level.
With the tablet pad, they atleast have something going for it that distinguishes it from the competition.
Now Sony may claim that the PS3 + Vita combo can be used to same effect, but that's only talks.
And besides, not every PS3 owner has a Vita so I don't see many titles supporting that combo.
You have to think broader than just "traditional controller, better hardware" because if that would correspond with your needs doesn't mean it would also with everyone (infact you may be in the minority).
And to conclude - Nintendo were always innovating in the control department.
The NES had the D-pad, the SNES the shoulder buttons and four button layout, the N64 the analog stick and force feedback, the GC a ergonomic analog stick placement, the DS a 2nd touch screen, the Wii motion controls, ect.
The Wii U pad is an expected evolution that opens new possibilties (whether good or bad).
Proof is in the soup...

This fake one looks better to me:
I don't know why they went with the 360 design when they already had the awesome GC design...

GC controller sux imo ..I didn't like it, I tend to think its Nintendo wanting to be different for the sake of being different. So glad they went back to SNES control pad design style...of course now updated with extra buttons and analog stick.
That way they wouldn't spend money on that and spend on improving the graphics and stuff like that.swrowe78They invented the d pad, shoulder buttons and the analog stick for home videogame consoles. What more can you possibly want from them? Oh, and the Wii U pro controller makes this thread invalid.
Just don't expect to enjoy racing games with the non-analog, digital triggers, unless its a cart game.FastEddie2121The original Gran Turismo worked just fine with the right stick as the throttle.
stop your gripping , if you dont like the pad you can always buy a u pro controller to use it is exactly like the xbox360 controller except stick placment ,
Troll?
Its called INNOVATION. Every time Nintendo makes a new system we get a new controller. Unlike Playstation and Xbox where it looks the same every system. People are afraid of mastering a new controller or to damn lazy. Seriously. Nintendo does whats right.

So having to revert back to a control scheme from 1997 is a good thing? What about Gamecube games played through the VC which require analog triggers? Even SSB needs them as well to pull of certain moves. Its a very odd move from Ninty. We'll see how much people like it if and when GTA5 hits the wii-u. This isn't an innovation. Its a pain in the ass. They are also used in a myriad of ways so its not just sim based racing games that would be hit, but its certainly the most obvious.

Keeping in mind that I detest racing games, I've needed an analog trigger for one game this entire generation- Alpha Protocol had a lockpicking minigame that used the left and right triggers. Put exactly the right about of pressure on the pins and lock them in place. Beyond that, all I've ever done with the triggers is either floor the gas in GTA, Just Cause 2, etcetc, or aim and shoot.
