I get that Nintendo makes it, but still; we don't call the 360 the "Microsoft XBox 360", or the PS3 the "Sony Playstation 3", so why leave the company name in the title? We all know who created it. It's just another little thing that ticks me off, since it makes the Wii sound like some sort of toy, which implies that it's only for kids, which makes gaming seem like less of an important form of media.

Maybe it's just the way it sounds, but it really bothers me. Although I do notice that the Nintendo name has been in nearly all of its home consoles: the NES, SNES, N64, but I don't remember the GC being called the "Nintendo Gamecube". I could be wrong, though.

Does anyone agree with me on the point that including the name "Nintendo" in the title is a little more than pointless?

People say "Nintendo" Wii because they don't want people to be confused and mistake what they said for something else.;)

Its not always called the Nintendo Wii. In fact the code name was "Revolution", not the Nintendo "Revolution". When they changed the name to "Wii", they said just that, "Wii". Nothing b4 it, nothing after it. The official name is "Wii". Whether or not people call it "Nintendo Wii" is their choice. People can call it wutever the hell they want, as long as people know what they are refering to.

Myself, and most people I know just call it "Wii", or the Wii...

well yeah the complete name is Nintendo Wii but you don't hear people saying "I'm going home so I can play with my Nintendo Wii" i mean it's kind of silly thinking about this 'cuz people don't call it Nintendo Wii people just call it wii, so what's the point of getting mad about it?

And yeah, it was also named Nintendo Gamecube if you don't remenber

Interesting tip: did you know that the word "Nintendo" means "Made from heaven"???

Its because the name Nintendo deserves to be placed before Wii. Every living soul on this earth knows the name Nintendo so why not say it.

While it wasn't ALWAYS mentioned, some people did say Nintendo Gamecube. Not to mention, "Nintendo Gamecube" was actually on the lid & displayed at startup, the Wii is Nintendo's first major home console to not include the company's name.

Wii is the first nintendo console to officially not have the nintendo name on it. But since nintendo changes their console's names every generation they have to write nintendo for people to know it is made by nintendo. Since sony and microsoft have stuck with xbox or playstation, they get the name now. Same reason for the Nintendo DS. Since they ditched the gameboy name they had to slap nintendo onto DS. If you were a mom looking for something to buy her child for christmas, would you really know what the heck a DS is?

That's what I'm trying to say. I just worded it badly.

/thread.

Oh, and isn't the Japanese spelling of Wii some sort of combination of Nintendo, Revolution, and Victory? I think I heard that a long time ago, about the time the name was officially changed. That would make the "Nintendo" part even more redundant.

well also, it's just one word. Wii. With the PS3 you either say P-S-3 or playstation 3 and with the 360 you usually say Xbox 360 so I guess the Wii just nees some adjective in front to make sure people knoe what king of Wii they are talking about.

That makes some sense, but I don't think there are that many other "Wii"s out there, unless they're some sort of cheap rip-off like the Vii. In a way, it stops people from making a "Wee" machine or something.

This.

Just the other day I was talking to a guy about the Wii and some one walked into the conversation right when I said "Yeah, I love my Wii." Needless to say he was like "wtf?" and I had to clarify. I try to make sure to say "Nintendo Wii" every time now to avoid future mistakes.

I think some people call it the Nintendo Wii because "Wii" by itself feels like it needs more syllables. For example: x-box-three-six-ty. 5 syllables. play-sta-tion-three. 4 syllables. Even the shortened versions of those consoles (360 and PS3 respectively) each have 3 syllables. Wii only has one: Wii. So, to make it sound more important, stick Nintendo in front: that adds another 3 syllables, bringing the total to 4, thus staying more in line with the names of the other systems.

But that's just me.

Cause Wii sounds like weiner and is pretty lame... like somebody calling a hot dog a weiner OR calling a wang a weiner.

Saying things like: "Want to borrow my Wii?".. "I'm having problems with my Wii?" could mean something totally different

What i'm getting at is we've associated the phrase Wii with other meanings and will take some getting used to.

I agree with you. It's not like you'll say "Mum, can I have a Sony Playstation 3, a Microsoft Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii for Christmas." I would have said " Mum, can I have a PS3, a 360 and a Wii for Chritmas" See how much shorter it is!

I always used Nintendo to describe whatever Nintendo console I own. N64 is the only acception. I called my Gamecube either Nintendo Gamecube or Gamecube Nintendo unless I was typing it, and my Wii Nintendo Wii sometimes.

Wii is too short and can easily be confused with other things.

Adding Nintendo quickly clarifies what it is, and it doesn't really bother people to add Nintendo at the beginning because the name Wii is only a syllable long in the first place.

Nah, I meant every word and never intended it as a joke. I'm not the best at explaining things and most people don't agree with my opinion anyways. Ever since they named the Nintendo Wii, Wii instead of Revolution i've thought that the name was horrible.

I don't mind it. Sometimes it actually sounds better then just 'Wii' when used in the right context. Also, for all you people saying the name 'Nintendo' is in every Nintendo system what about Game Boy, Game & Watch, & Virtual Boy. They don't use the word 'Nintendo' in their names.

They have always used the name in their home systems. Portables are another story (yes, the Virtual boy is considered "portable"... at least that's how it was marketed).

Except nobody ever claims they're playing "with" a console. It's not a toy. They were just playing it. Not with it.

And if you're immature enough to still think that the word "Wii" is relevant to private parts, you need to grow up.
