yeah, i know, to keep the wierdos away from the kiddies, but metroid would of been so much better online with non FC voice chat and choosable game modes without them being friends or rivals. and then people just give their friend codes in forums like this one! who's with me on the basis that friend codes are a nuiseance and hold back the full online expperience?

It's exactly as you said, to keep kids safe. We will probably never experience true online play from this generation of Nintendo. But, since they make some of the best games in the world, it might be a trade worth making.

I agree a little more freedom would be nice since I think there are a lot more older people playing nintendo systems than kids...maybe have something for the children where they put in their age and it gives them the version of online games we have now but for the adults its like every other online game. Even going by account name and making it so only 1 person has to invite and the other accepts would be nice...

On the bright side, it does prevent the less intelligent folk from spamming you with obscenities and reasons why they 'pwn you' when they're losing 5-0.As such people are the reason I avoid online PC gaming, I think it's a good trade.

^Friend codes aren't really keeping kids safe, just making it harder for those who would offend and prey to do so while crippling online play in the process. Truth is you probably do not need a chat room as nothing of interest or intelligence ever goes on in there, but not having a centralized meeting place to find games is just bothersome.

I see so many signatures that are just long lists of game names and numbers in hopes that someone will take the time to write their name down, input that long list of digits and hope to find them online at the same time. Is this what Nintendo had in mind? It shows that the company has little experience with online play and its a shame with such a great lineup of titles.

To answer the OP question, yes friend codes stink.

Friend codes are a real pain and when most people are getting them off forums from people they don't really know it sort of defeats the object of it. there should be more games like MKDS where you can choose to play against friends or go worldwide if you want to.

friend codes aren't all that bad. it takes a minute at most to write down a friend code and put it on a game. it's not rocket science. and the best wifi games (mario kart and metroid) allow you to play games without friend codes anyways so why does it matter.

Friend codes are easy to use and only bother people who are trying to meet new people on line and become friends. Making friends is what the real world (and forums :)) are for. I've tried the alternative, using a server browser and entering games you want, but unfortunately none of the DS games are like Halo or anything. Imagine if you suddenly dropped in on a MK race. It sounds retarded because it is. Now, MP: H should have had a browser and servers to play on, but hey gotta keep consistency, right? My only gripe of friend codes is that it should be DS codes. I'm tired of using multiple friend codes for each game.
