People have been saying how even games like Metroid and Galaxy felt more casual than their predecessors. I've given it a little thought and I've come up with a hypothesis. I've come to the conclusion that one of the reasons why the Wii feels more casual because of the fact it uses motion controls. When you use motion you bypass having to use a button press or a number of other in-game things to achieve the same objective. Motion control / waggle isn't all that traditional when playing games either which gives the impression that it's easy / casual. When it comes to gaming button presses just felt more hardcore because you had to press a number of buttons to do certain things instead of moving your hands to do something in-game. I don't mind pressing buttons but Wii games just feel easier and sometimes I just want an easy, stress-free game to play. The Wii is stress-free gaming in a small box.

Eh I guess I can agree that Metroid Prime 3 is easier than MP1 and MP2, but it's still pretty hardcore. And Twilight Princess is easier but it was originally a GC game, so I don't know if that counts.

The WII is not a stress-free gaming device. Galaxy got me fustrated especially the Daredevil Runs.... Mario Kart WII is fustrating as well with the items.... and for Brawl.. the lag is the only fustrating thing.

But other than... I like this post. It's true.

Wait was this because of my comment about metroid and mario in your other thread?

Well you heard my opinion probably, but yes I think some of the games are becoming a little more casual like metroid. There wasn't really any real exploration as in past games. They showed you everywhere you needed to go, and the paths were mostly straight forward one door to the next door for the most part. Plus you can get the location of every expansion.

As for Mario it's always been a casual experience, that's what everyone starts out with when they are young. That's why we have so many spin-offs and why he is so successful, because everyone knows him new and old gamers.

I think zelda may be the only game that could be difficult for casual players to pick up and play, but even that has gotten simpler over time.

Trying to get gold/silver medals on some of the levels in Sonic and the Secret Rings is VERY frustrating. But the game has it's easy levels too.

re4 is easy bc you played it already ok i didnt play it 100 percent so its as hard for me lol red steel is so frustrating it isnt funny as is driver paralell lines , zelda is hardcore you just finished it as much as i finished alttp ALL SYSTEMS GAMES HAVE GOTTEN EASIER since this gen started , eg

pd0 compared to pd64 omg to easy halo3 much easier and not as lengthy as 1 or 2 and one of the most obvious would be gta iv what so difficult about shooting lol san andreas is still the hardest of the gta games lol also longest

so no i 30 percent agree , because it isnt just wii its all 3 sony ms what games besides dead rising resident evil goldeneye007 perfect dark 64 doom dn64 ya people get with the times final fantasy zelda or any long rpg

ill do a little comparision between 2 first person shooters to help you out

lets do timesplitters series and the halo series

timesplitters had 3 difficulties which when done on normal or hard ,, it became frustrating as new objectives where added as well as the limited bullets like goldeneye stronger enimies halo, its the same on any difficulty just stronger enimies and less ammo ,,

timesplitters had a series of challenges which in my opinion make the game hard in itself, you dont need to do missions to find these hard lol, especally in timesplitters 2 , one where you gotta catch bag tag get 3 or more points than your opponent, key word three more, not just getting 3 that was and is still uncompleted for me,

then on timesplitters future perfect in just the 2nd or normal difficulty mode of the arcade league theres one that i have to hold on to as many zones by my self with at least 5 ai on the opposing team ,

halo has nothing like that , why is timesplitters as hard as goldeneye well simply because the team behind it made goldeneye

now lets compare san andreas to gta iv ,

san andreas had 6 chapters in its story , ,

with missions varrying in difficulty and you did different things all the time, the most frustrating mission for me would have to be the one where you fly that plane , and or zero missions, that just halted me for two days

gta iv on the other hand, it has you shoot whom ever at a certain time, lol ,

the only hard thing is locating the jumps or birds lol nothing halted me ,

For Metroid being casual, I'll admit that it was too easy on the lowest difficulty setting the first time around. But try it on Hyper mode, and you get a very hardcore experience (dying 5+ times on every boss, and taking 3 months of on/off playing to defeat the last one). Perhaps it's not so much casual, but adaptive difficulty.

Thats how all games are made now, games now are made to be accessible by a large number of people. Hence this often makes games easier by mostly giving you more options than you initially had. Take MGS4 for example it was easier than previous MGS games because you could run through that thing like Rambo, and with all the healing items, superior weapons and abilities, it can be a breeze. Its pretty simple as technology grows the more you can do in games and the more everyone tries to tap into this casual players market the more games will become like this.

As controls become better and more efficient, games seem easier. As technology advances and we can add so much to games, they're going to be made less frustrating.

Mario Galaxy was a pain in the arse at some points, much harder han I ever thought 64 was. Prime 2 was much harder than 1, and 3 was probably about the same difficulty as 1.
Games aren't getting easier/more casual. Controls are becoming more intuitive, frustrations are becoming less frequent in more well-made games, and you are becoming better gamers.

I agree. And people were complaning about NP's secret surprise being House of the Dead Overkill even though they themselves only found out about it like 2 days before.

I agree with this also. Except it's mostly the IR pointer that makes it easier. Waggle is sometimes more fun but it's not really that much easier.

But in MGS4 u still had a choice. u can choice to sneak around the game. With wii games like MP3 u cant really choice to make the game harder
