Why is called the Wii U? Why not call it the Wii HD?

So why is the Wii U called the Wii U, and what does the U stand for? Since it an HD version or replacement of the original Wii it should have been called the Wii HD.

I do have a Wii U and I like it alot so I am not picking on it, and I had an original Wii and I hated it especially the motion based controls.

The fact that even people who own the system don't really understand what Nintendo are trying to achieve with it should be sending clear signals to Nintendo that in the future they need to focus on not only making their message clearer, but also conveying that message.

i have no idea why they would even associate it with the wii. should have took that name out completely only becuase everyone asks me if its a extra peripheral. iv seen people return wiiu games saying it didnt work on their wii. Hell when i was trying to preorder mine from walmart and target the employees and managers kept telling me no such thing existed lol it was rediculous, i too am curious why they called it the wiiu

It's a completely different system, with different play mechanics. It's not just an HD version of the Wii.

It's not a replacement or a HD version, it's the successor to the Wii, just as the Wii was the successor to the Gamecube, just as the Gamecube was the successor to the Nintendo 64, etc.

Anyway, Wii HD sounds weird and it objectifies the console as a Wii but with a higher resolution.

Super Wii would've been better.

Yeah, I've seen so many shops near me having signs up around the Wii U games saying "Wii U games only work on a Wii U console", it's pretty ridiculous.

its much more than just an HD wii...

the controls are completetly different....wiimote is not the main controller anymore.. the inventioon of miiverse and ninetndos new online direction..

it uses blu-ray discs....it now has a tv guide service that connects to your cable box...you can play games without the tv on..

its more than just an HD wii..

..

btw reggie said its called wiiU because it will focus on yoU ..the gamer..

The Wii was called Wii cause it was like We play together. Meaning it got people together. Reggie said Wii U is a system specifically made for U meaning you. Thats why.

I really wish they had changed the Wii part of the logo, just like how they added only a red 3 to the DS logo on the 3DS. The fact that the logos look so similar can't help with consumer confusion. Hopefully if they do a slim or redesign Wii U in a few years they change the logo like Sony did with the their redesigns

If it was specifically made for me then why does it not seem to interest me the way a system made for me should. Reggie lied.

Begs the question why people aren't confused when it comes to PS2/PS3 Xbox/Xbox 360, etc. Don't get me wrong, I've met my fair share of people who are dumbfounded when they are told a PS3 game will not work on a PS2, etc, but I guess it's just because the letter U is as subtle as anything

I've definitely seen the same stuff for the 3DS aswell, there was a lot of confusion with that.. Ah well

If I recall correctly, the U is supposed to mean the console is for "you", the gamer, or something along those lines. The name should have been changed completely.

There are some very legit concerns in this thread- I am astonished how many people are unclear on whether the Wii U is simply the newest bundle of the traditional Wii or just the designation of the tablet peripheral. You can sort of see how Nintendo is trying to follow suit with Sony and Microsoft by coming up with a core brand name and just popping a number or letter at the end to represent subsequent generations but the problem with Nintendo is that they've (successfully) targeted the younger and older markets; individuals who, generally speaking, aren't up on the incrimental changes of hardware updates and generation advancements.

I have heard that the "U" represents "you" in the way Wii was a play on the concept of "we". I've also heard that the U is short for Universe, as in the next logical progression from the Galaxy editions of games on the first Wii.

Either way, there is no denying that the general public is having a really hard time understanding that Wii U is in fact Nintendo's 8th Generation offering and not just a new bundle/ peripheral package for the 7th gen Wii.

If the public is confused over the Wii U name then that is their problem, not Nintendo's. Anyway, this controversy over the Wii U name is just what Nintendo wants--discussion which will attract interest in the system.

The Wii HD is too generic and the Wii U is more than HD graphics.

That would cause more confusion. It implies that it's just an HD version of the Wii, which is not.

thetravman

There cannot be anymore confusion than there already is. Its impossible. Both names are equally bad.

They should have just called it the Wii 2.. Or the Nintendo U... More likely the Wii 2.

Wii U already leaves you with the first impression that its an add-on to current gen Wii. Wii HD that problem is even more prevalent.

Its not the public's fault its Nintendo. If the public is confused then it would reflect in the sales. Sales affect Nintendo's bottom line so they better start caring before this confusion becomes financially problematic. The least they could have done was change the color of the box but as of now the difference between the Wii and Wii U is the inclusion of U which is barely noticeable to the browsing customer.

Marketing. The market of WII owners is uninformed parents, so they're not going to know what's going on or when to expect a new console. I have friends who are casual Halo/COD gamers who have no idea a new Wii was released. They did an awful job of marketing their product not to mention there aren't really any 'system sellers'.
