It's probably because they're trying too hard to be cool and different. Like "let's put this random indie song on our commercial and people will think we're 'with the times'. The kids will love us."
I've seen both Apple songs (the two most recent ones) live before the commercials blew them up. What are you hinting at, Mr. Newman >.
I don't know what commercials you get in the States, but in Canada they play "up-and-coming" artists so that they will appear to be, as I said before, "with the times".
I have nothing against the artists who have their music on the commericals, other than the fact that they sold out to get on the commercials.
So what about the use of older 70's rock in advertising like the hummer commercial that used a song by the who? Or I wanna rock by twisted sister?
I think that the recent trend of indie-ish songs getting used in advertisements is caused by three things.
-The first being that the digital distribution era makes it easier for these smaller groups to be heard (download of the day on itunes for an example).
- Next, the marketing field is very much about know what is new and hip and interesting and how people will think in the next few months before they even realize it, so the freshest music is more likely to be spread in those circles and in turn used in their campaigns.
-Finally, the decline of the boomers is leaving some holes in marketing jobs which are being picked up by younger people straight out of college. The young people are best suited for the task of putting together campaigns that the growing young adult demographic which has the spare income to take up hobbies like music appreciation.
The wii at the oscars was a bit surprising, but certainly wasn't free. Product placement is a huge growing business in the marketing segment, and, with a worldwide audience of several hundred million if not into the billions, this certainly fits into that catagory.
