I was wondering if it would be possible for them to make a download from the virtual console or something that will let you play DVD's, maybe like a DVD channel.
Sorry about the title typo. I meant to say possible.

It'd be kinda neat, but to me it's just an added bonus.
Don't know how useful it'd be for me though.
For some people it would be useful as it frees up an an AV input, but I don't know what the quality would be like for the serious home cinema users among us.
I do know that it'd be more than satisfactory [:
It already reads the DVD format. Nintendo has a deal with a company to develop the capabilities and the company happens to deal primarily in software. Do a bit of research and the answer is yes, but we'll be waiting to get it. I've heard talk about around the end of the year.
If I could find any links, I would, but I've read this stuff a few months ago and I am not about to dig through the mess to find it. It should be said that Gamespot is my main source of info though, so it was more than likely here.

They cant do it with a firmware update. Maybe some other way.sonic_rusher

Yeah I agree 100%.
HD DVD and Blu-Ray are too expensive for Ninty to put into a console right now because they want to remain the cheapest competitor. These things start off expensive but then they drop to around £20/$40 and they become common in households across the world.
People cannot ask a simple question here and simply get it answered.
Q-"Can the Wii possibly play DVD's with an update?"
A-"Buy a DVD player"
A-"HD is teh more awesomer"
A-"You should already have a way to play DVDs"
A-"If it could play DVDs out of the box it would be teh expensivorz!"
Wow, you guys are such a big help.

If you really want the nerdy explanation as to why it would not be available through an update, I'll happily give it to you.
Another reason why it won't happen:
When Nintendo dished out its final specifications for the Wii, there seemed to be one glaring omission--DVD playback. With the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 touting built-in multimedia players, the Wii seemed to be only next-generation console unable to provide movie playback.
Now, less than a week before the Wii is even on shelves for the first time, it appears that those final specifications weren't so final after all. After weeks of speculation and Internet reports, it has been confirmed that the Wii will eventually get DVD playback.
Sonic Solutions, makers of the popular Roxio CD- and DVD-burning software, today announced that it has been chosen by Nintendo to provide "high-quality DVD movie viewing to a future version" of the Wii. Sonic Solutions says the new version of the Wii is expected in "the latter half of 2007."
When asked for comment, a representative from Nintendo confirmed the statement from Sonic Studios.
Nintendo has yet to make a formal announcement about the new Wii, and has not indicated whether DVD playback is part of a console redesign.
im pretty sure i read that the only reason the wii cant play dvd's is because ninty would have to pay a large fee to enable it. it technically can but its not enabled. plus didnt they promise dvd enabled wiis in 08?
i actually kinda think you'll be able to buy dvd playback in wii ware or something.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'd never use it.It'd be kinda neat, but to me it's just an added bonus.

Of course it's possible. But will it happen? hell no. Nintendo never do the little things that count.
Would it kill them to show the freaking time when i click the home button?
No but what is possible is streaming services on the Wii to watch movies. Or download movies on a big SD card. Though playing DVD movies on the Wii most likely will requirenew additionalhardware.fr0stm0rn

At the moment, no - no firmware download would allow you to play dvds. It could make it possible to play movies off an SD card, given the right codecs, but again its limited by this silly restriction on SD card sizes.
My guess would be what they did with the PanasonicCube and bring out a limited edition DVD playing Wii.
No, not even firmware update.
Why?
Because Nintendo uses their own Optical Discs which are not DVDs.
That's why the Wii can also read Cube discs.
A firmware upgrade could probably solve it. The Wii uses encrypted DVDs as its media storage so it can play DVDs.
But Nintendo skipped the DVD movie playback because of licensing fees which would've made the console more expensive. So it won't happen.
There was talk about a new version of Wii justfor Japan which would be able to play DVD movies.
It's not like 95% of people have DVD players anyway...... ;)JrWhoDude, i already have a DVD player, just not in the room my Wii is in...
