Eh are you developers serious!! whats with the graphics for the Wii lately?. I just saw the new screens for the game 'surf's up' and it looks awful!!. Developers are getting lazy and should put all their effort into getting the most out of the Wii's graphic capabilities!. The nintendo Wii has better graphics power than the original xbox so start showing it!.

I dont care if developers delay games on the Wii as long as they are improving that game to the best it can be!....no more rushed games!. It has to be said that Nintendo are the best developers for their own system cus games like Mario galaxy,SMBB,Metro Prime....they all look great at the moment but its the likes of ubisoft,EA,THQ that are making half arsed games and im sick of it!. Its just dragging the nintendo wii's name in the mud by having these lame ass graphics when we all know that the Wii is far more capable!. Anyone agree?

I really hope developers quit being lazy soon. I have no idea what's up with all these new games that looks like / worse than GC games, either. It's starting to piss me off a little. I fear that Mario Galaxy is going to be the first Wii game that looks great.

Quit saying graphics aren't important. Games like GTA: Vice City wouldn't have ruled this much if they had Pacman graphics.

Oh god you dont get my point at all!...yes gameplay is more important and all that but LISTEN!!! developers can at least use what the Wii has to offer for graphics aswell!. It would be great to get the whole package for a Wii game on a nintendo wii system!!......not only just great gameplay and but good graphics also that match up to the Wii's standard!. Now are you starting to listen!

You're right, they are being lazy. But this is just the beginning for Wii. Things will get much prettier as soon as some first party games like Mario and Metroid come out. Then people will know what Wii is capable of, and they won't buy some ugly EA rehash game.

This is nothing new... Very few developers pushed the GameCube graphically as well. I can name a handful of titles that looked great on GameCube. So far, the only ones that look decent on Wii are Sonic and Red Steel (at times). And yet the Wii can do much more than that. FarCry is a crying shame.

I really don't care much for graphics. When i see good graphics, all I say is "oooooooh, that looks nice!" The graphics is not what interest me in games, its the fun that I can get out of it. Its all about gameplay for me. Graphics can't keep me playing, only the amount of fun the game is giving me.

Gameplay and graphics are both important. There is more to games than graphics, and there is more to games than gameplay. It takes a good balance between the two to make a great game. The Wii developers see the use of the Wiimote as an escape from having to put in the smallest effort to make a game visually appealing. They think, "People who buy a Wii aren't buying it for the graphics, they're buying it for the remote." As you can see, many people are starting to see through this. Devs had better begin to implement some decent graphics. At least current as of 5 years ago.

Sonic looks great.  Better than anything the cube could do. Excite Truck and Rayman don't look bad either, they might have been possible on the cube, but they would have at least been top tier looking cube games, unlike most other wii crap.  I'm not too worried about graphics, but It would be nice if some developers put some effort into the games.

I have to agree with you wholeheartedly.  A good example of the laziness of developers compared with what they are actually capable of can be seen in a great Gamecube launch title, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2.  That game, hands down, looks much better than anything anyone has offered on Wii.  They should all be ashamed of themselves, Nintendo included.

theres alot more to gameing than graphicsstinky_bomb

And it's that attitude, which Nintendo unfortunately has planted into all of our heads, that has led to subpar graphics.  I don't care what anyone says, yes it is gameplay over graphics, but if that's the case, why didn't we get the wiimote simply as an add on for the GC?  Why aren't we playing monopoly or cards right now then?  Why were the graphic capabilities improved for the wii, slight as they are?

Oh, that's because Nintendo knows that graphics are still important.  Graphics shouldn't be the sole focus, HOWEVER, they are still an integral component of the gaming experience.  Imagine a game like Half Life or even Resident Evil 4 without the amazing audio/visual technical wonders those developers worked so hard to deliver?  So next people are going to say, well, those games were made to help deliver a story.  So games without stories don't need great graphics.  Well, that's a whole other topic altogether.  Are there certain games that need more graphical attention?  Can certain genres do with stick figures and black and white?  Puzzle games maybe.

On another note, we do need to give devs time.  Remember, the remote is a radically new interface and devs are only given a certain amount of resources (money, time) and are constantly being pressured to put things out the door to be released, which again may be a flaw in the game design model itself.  Games like Spore, Sims or GTA or the Blizzard games (some of these examples may be innacurate or outdated) take forever to get releases because they are fine tuning everything.  Blizzard used to only release one title every couple of years, but it would come out as compelling and nearly flawless, true epic gaming experiences, which the Wii isn't after.  However, those aforementioned games sold like hotcakes.  I will assume that the thing most publishing companies without much experience for the developing of games don't understand, what most of the team directed towards sales and profit margins and such, (and this next part precludes any issues regarding video games as art) is that any piece of work which hopes to rise about the mediocrity and be a truly good piece of work takes WORK, which takes TIME, and PATIENCE.

So I guess on that end, we Wii gamers are beset with a paradox of sorts.  Wii want great games, and some people on the board express their willingness to let developers take their time to deliver better products.  At the same time, there aren't enough good games out, we're going through a game drought, etc.  So which is it?  Personally, I would rather wait long enough to get a game like Spore and because of how well crafted it is, be able to play the game for 100 hours or more.  Why is it taking so long for us to get games like SMG, or TP, or even SSBB?  Because Nintendo themselves understands the need to deliver quality products.  Of course, they are a huge company now who can afford to take their time.  So the responsibility I think now lies in the gamers hands, which again can be problematic.  Do we help support smaller devs by buying their (sometimes) subpar games, in the hopes that they might deliver on the next one that WOW-OH GEE-THAT WAS AN AMAZING GAME experience?  Or do we wait and wait and only support those elite companies?  On the one hand, why support the smaller devs if they are handing us horrible games?  On the other hand, when a company gets too big, they get lazy and themselves start delivering subpar material, and right then is when some small unheard of dev delivers an amazing product and becomes the next Nintendo or Rockstar.

So back to the original argument about games and graphics.  I think it's unfair to call the graphics unneeded, or that they aren't everything, because that's simply dismissive and encourages lazy game design, not only for graphics, but for everything.  I mean, if we all of a sudden excuse graphics, what's next?  Sound?  Game control?  What?  Seriously.  Graphics are an important part of the video game experience, no matter what any Nintendo rep or fanboy says.  For the rest of us, you, any gamer, who is still so adamant that graphics aren't everything, well, there's still Monopoly.

A recent problem with Nintendo is not having decent third party support,so I think that Nintendo is trying to be nice about it too, so that the third party developers aren't scared away.

Laughable, like many of the posts in this thread. Look at IGN's list of the top games for GC, as an example. For the most part, the games that made that list had some of the better/best graphics the system has seen. Developers who take the time to produce great gameplay, and great graphics, are usually justly rewarded. Mediocrity in any facet, be it visuals, sound, controls, story, presentation, etc, will only serve to take away from your experience. Wanting the best possible games means demanding the best of quality in all of those facets, period. With the way games are made nowadays, every part of the game has it's own department working on it, so the excuse that strength in one would lead to weakness in another is weak and pathetic argument.

Look at the sheer size of GTA. You cannot build a game that huge and that flowing without sacrificing somewhere. Final Fantasy can create beautfiful environments through and through, because the worlds are all detached and pre-rendered backdrops. In GTA, EVERYTHING is alive, interactive, and free-flowing. You can drive from the furthest north to the furthest south with only the slightest of load times. If they had made the game as beautiful as a RE4, the game would need to reload every 2nd block. And every neighborhood would have had it's own disc. Hardly convenient. What GTA only further proved is that a great idea will trump great technology every single time. Unfortunately, you do need a certain respectable level of technology in the first place to be able to pull off your great idea, and when great ideas are coupled with great technology, then we're all the better off for it.

Come on!  Using your "Golden Rule" I could make a game with one polygon, and it should be the best game ever.  Also by your logic Zelda should suck because it looks so great.

No, I believe it is relevant. You're complaining about how developers aren't putting enough work into the games, mainly the graphics. Well, games like Elebits, SSX Blur, and Rayman don't have the best graphics, nor represent what the system is capable of, but yet are great games to play. So my point is, graphics aren't what make these games great, it's the gameplay and the experience. It should be about having fun, not how many pixels you can see. The Wii should regularly be putting out games that look as good as RE4; there's no reason for a system power powerful than the gamecube to put out games with bad graphics.

again.......im not focusing on poor graphics, its about lazy developers just doing enough to say 'i got the best of what i could do with the Nintendo Wii'!!.well thats a load of bs!. The Nintendo Wii has built good graphics into some games but they can be even better!. The nintendo Wii can provide so much more for a game if the developers start realising that graphics and gameplay are a package for a complete good game wheather anyone think's it or not!. In other words developers arent using the Nintendo Wii to its true potential!!. Thats the biggest issue here!.

If i would get a Wii, it wouldn't be because of its graphics... but then again. If i play F.E.A.R. and then look at a Wii screenshot. The difference shocks me time after time ^^

I personaly liked the way Wii sports looked like though.

In this first generation of games, developers are just trying to figure out the Wiimote and everything its capable of. In the second and third generation of games is when they will start putting more effort into graphics.

The nintendo Wii can provide so much more for a game if the developers start realising that graphics and gameplay are a package for a complete good game wheather anyone think's it or not!. In other words developers arent using the Nintendo Wii to its true potential!!. Thats the biggest issue here!.

So a game can't be "completely good" if it doesn't use graphics to the console's full potential? I'm sorry, but not many games DO use the console to it's full potential, on any console. Look how long it took for a game like Gears of War to appear on Xbox 360, and the console still has room for improvement. It takes time, first generation games usually aren't all the way there yet. Although unlike the 360, Nintendo didn't set out to create a console with the best looking games, and they encouraged developers to create innovative and fun games, which there have been a few so far released. I'd rather developers worry more about gameplay than graphics to be honest. I'd be complaining more about controls than graphics at this point. Most developers aren't using the controls to it's full potential. Now that's a worthy topic.

what? where are you going with this?. I said i rather have developers take more time on games and you just admitted that not many games do use the console to its full potential!. Thats the main issue im addressing!!. Seriously who are you trying to cover up for?. I have a valid point so stop trialing off the subject!. You have good points but im just saying that most third party developers aren't taking full advantage of the Wii including graphics so stop making this thread into a gameplay vs graphics discussion cus its not at all!!.

[QUOTE="DarthFedor"]

There is also a lot more to graphics than gaming...

Quit saying graphics aren't important. Games like GTA: Vice City wouldn't have ruled this much if they had Pacman graphics.

Mizarus
i guess you never played the first GTA =p, i still have a blast playng that, but i agree devs are getting lazy with the wii, and they are using the wii gameplay as an excuse, thats really lame

The first GTA > all it's 3d Sequels IMO. I guess just prefered the birdseye view for some reason... And while you're all argueing about "ZOMG we need better graphix!" or, "No, we needz teh gamplayz!" I'm sitting here waiting patiently for the return of the sprite. It could happen!

they're just pumping out games right now, because the developers know there's a ton of Wii's sold and relatively few attractive games. i feel like they are just putting it out there because it will sell no matter what it looks like. gotta give it time i guess.

Nothing wrong with sprites. I'll play sprite RPG's and side-scrolling 2D's any day. (just two examples)

i agree, wii sports has good graphics. sometimes i wish there were less jaggeds, but it's not as bad as the first PS2 games.

I agree with you, the third parties should bring out more quality games if they are gonna get any sales. When it comes to the money though, they just get a lil lazy.
