An article at Kotaku Reads:

"While the Wii isn't known for its particularly awesome online scene (*cough* friend codes *cough*), Nintendo is interested in improving the product. NOA President Reggie Fils-Aime said this morning during a conference call that while they have no interest in adding online multiplayer to Virtual Console titles, voice chat could be coming to the Wii all the same.

and he also stated that'We do not anticipate making online gameplay for Virtual Console games. In terms of voice chat... certainly our system has the capability for online voice chat, what it comes down to is finalizing the peripheral... I would not be surprised to see that capability come to this system.'

And finalizing a peripheral shouldn't be much of a problem, because Nintendo could easily add a Bluetooth headset...since the Wiimote already utilizes the wireless standard."

I believe that if there is a headset, they should make a wireless reciever that plugs into the USB outlets on the rear of the Wii and connects to the headset wirelessly. Another alternative, would be to make a sort of "bridge" between the Wiimote and the Nunchuk. The way this would work would be that it plugs into the Wiimote with a Nunchuk outlet at the end. A thirs alternative could be using bluetooth (since it is already used for the Wiimote) ,even thought they already said it above. They could just use the Home button as a sort of Xbox 360 dashboard sort of thing where Voice chat and messaging is a whole different thing and does not have to be all about the game.

What do you guys think about:

-peripheral setup ?

-release (date/if it will happen or not) ?

-my idea for the setup ?

In other words the only hurdle is making a Wii-only-compatible headset that ensures Nintendo reaps in the cash. Wouldn't a simple firmware update allow any bluetooth headset to be Wii-compatible? Or am I being too cynical about all this?

To answer you question, im going to have to say that, assuming that the wii wouldn't already work with blutooth like the wii mote, it should be able to with a firmware update.

I think that any bluetooth headset should be made compatible for wii because not everyone might want to use wii speak where your conversations are public and it is priced at £30 on its own! Nintendo are making us pay far too much.

I am going to buy animal crossing without wii speak and hope that a wii headset will come out for less or they make bluetooth ones compatible!

It will be a sad day if Nintendo ever uses a headset

Wii Speak is a nice adult choice for the system. If you have something to hear or say you have Wii Speak. Children don't like it because then their parents will hear what they're saying.

It would be a huge blow to the system if they offered a headset for the children

Unless a third-party makes some sort of headset peripheral, then I do not think we will be seeing this feature on the Wii. Nintendo's answer to online voice-chat is the Wii Speak - if you want something more enjoyable then get an XBOX 360, PS3 or gaming PC.
