Scores a 5/10. I'm not surprised.

Really, thats all I have to say about IGN's review. Everyone who's been reading their previews or listening to their podcasts knows they don't really like the game.
IGN once again lowers the score of a game they didn't hype so they can raise the score of one that they did.Jaysonguy
God forbid their opinion is different from yours.
Everyone who has been reading the previews knew that 1UP would give it a high score and IGN would give it a low one. I just didn't expect it to be this low. :?
I'm really curious though to see what GameSpot and Nintendo Power or ONM give it.

Which overrated score are you referring to?
Whatever flavor of the month they're pushing.

IGN doctors scores. Matt CassahowdidIgetthisjobIcan'tplaygames even edits other Wii reviews so the total score reflects what he thinks it should get.
I pity the Wii games that release around the Conduit. They're going to get points taken off simply because they're going to have to be used to pump up the Conduit's price, oh I mean score.

You seem to have a really screwy sense of cause and effect.

Ouch, sorry Matt.

Or maybe they just don't think Wii Music is a very good game...?
i was expecting this from ign they have hated the game from E3. i haven't seen any of there reviews in the past few months any good, i mean from there movies, wii, and other parts of the site ti seems like most web sites have been getting more harsh on reviews inless its a hyped up gameelbert_b_23I don't know about that. I mean, de Blob had barely any hype at all, and IGN still gave it an 8/10...well, then again, they expected it to be good..nvm lol
As much as I don't like the score or IGN's review style in general, it's not a terrible review. Most of the things that Matt describes as being bad actually sound fun to me.
One thing I can't argue with yet is that the music sounds terrible, since I haven't had the chance to hear it in person. But the wording of his review makes me doubt the severity of that issue.... He says that although MIDI inherently sounds worse than real music, the upside to it is spontaneity. Well, that's the point of Wii Music. It wouldn't be possible to get great orchestral sounds out of such a customizable game, though I do understand his point about good and bad MIDI. The piano sounds fine to me, but I've never heard good MIDI of a stringed instrument like a violin, since the dynamics of the real instrument just don't translate well to a digital kind of input.
But one thing Matt and I seem to agree on is this:
I think there are the beginnings of a great concept with the custom jam sessions, enabling you take control of several different instruments and layer them together into a song. . . . This process, called overdubbing, is where determined buyers desperate to make the most of Wii Music will be able to experiment with songs and ultimately add their own signature styIe to them. I think this is Wii Music's single greatest feature.Matt
That's pretty much what I've been saying from the beginning, even without ever playing it. And if Matt, who apparently sucks at rhythm and this game in general judging by his gameplay vids, can enjoy this part of the game, then I'm sure lots of people will. I'll say again that we're sure to see some pretty cool Wii Music videos on YouTube with some awesome renditions of these songs.

Why not? You pre-record all the songs and grace notes being played on real instruments.
Why don't you also acknowledge the music library as a problem? He brings up a good point about that.

Wait just a minute, pal. Let me get this straight. Are you telling me that IGN tends to end up giving good scores to games they say are probably going to be good and giving bad scores to games they say are probably going to be bad?
Seeing that the biggest Nintendo Fanboy over at IGN gave it a 5, I see no problem here for anyone to come up with crazyness. Tjeremiah1988
And yet they do.

That's a matter of taste, and I don't know the entirety of the track list. It's not that important to me, really. I would never listen to most of the songs in Guitar Hero or Rock Band just for the fun of it, but I still love playing them. I can have a blast belting out the Freezepop song in Rock Band, but I always end it by laughing and saying "that's such a terrible song." Still fun.
As for the MIDI thing, I honestly don't know that much about it since I've never worked with interactive sound on a technical level. But it seems to me that using real recordings would sound utterly manufactured and disjointed, since the notes and chords flow into each other on the real instruments. It wouldn't be an easy effect to recreate when the next sound isn't set in stone, at least I don't think it would be. Again, I can't be positive.
But I won't argue that point too hard. The only thing that matters is what's in the game and whether or not it works well. Matt says it doesn't, and I don't remember 1up saying anything about the quality of the MIDI.
It seems that there's a problem though in that it's trying to appeal to too many different audiences, and ends up with not enough to please any one audience (except maybe the kids.) I'd be rather embarrassed to get my older relatives to play Twinkle Twinkle and I think they'd look at me curiously if I tried. But then, Wii Music doesn't have a lot of classical pieces, and it has very poor renditions of them, so they'd probably still be looking at me quizzically, wondering why I didn't just get them a nice recording of Itzhak Perlman, Isaac Stern, or Jean Pierre Rampal and get them a baton to wave around.
But then, apparently the person interested in Nintendo's own songs won't fair much better. Seems there's a lot of everything and too little of each thing.

But you're not playing your own notes to make your own variations. You're activating pre-recorded ones. In any case, it couldn't sound more disjointed than MIDI note changes.

Ya, 1UP's review really wasn't very thorough. ;)

I agree. I didn't even think it was that funny and I was the one who said it.
