Wii Online Multiplayer Games

I bought a Wii about a month ago and was under the assumption that Nintendo has finally decided to follow the popular trend of online multiplayer gaming with this new console. Am I missing something or are there no plans for this. And I don't understand why 3rd party developers don't include a multiplayer option even when they do so for the same game on other consoles, such as Call of Duty 3. What's the deal?

You should add that any Activision titles from Wii might be online as well.
