It can, there is an ethernet attachment that you have to buy. It's only about $15. 

Nintendo have stated they will be releasing an Ethernet Kit for the Wii. This will allow users to connect the Wii to a standard internet router without the need for wireless support. Good news for those of us not currently using wireless routers.

It was also confirmed that if you have the USB dongle used for DS online play, this will work as well for Wii.

I suggest you google Wii Ethernet Kit. I dont think its out yet but I am not sure. 

Buy a router, please don't waste your money on anythng else

The best and easiest way to get your Wii online is with a router.
