[QUOTE="tomarlyn"]Hopefully they'll teach Nintendo a lesson in online and get rid of those friend codes while they're at it._vacant_

can I ask why you dislike the wii console FCs so much? noone has been able to give me a good reason. other than "its long" which is flimsy at best

I think cuz they like want to just meet any stranger and play em, plus its easier for those lazy people.

Yes its long, irritating, idiotic, archaic. You should be able to connect to anyone from anywhere on the fly, not have to swap friend codes and hope they're on. Its incredibly bang your head against a wall stupid. Indidvidual codes for each game takes it to the next level of foolishness too.

[QUOTE="Spelunker"]People really aren't getting this. They've been partners with Gamepy for years now: that's where the DS network comes from. There is nothing here that indicates it will be *any* different than the DS network, friends code and all. It's another piece of evidence that it *will* be like the DS network, friends codes and all.

This is bad news, not good.
_vacant_

yes, friends rosters, improved matchmaking, and ranking data. all very bad things.. why the hell would we want an improvement over the DS system? I mean, universal friend codes (*ahem* gamer tags) are the most pointless thing ever! why does the wii even have wifi, we should have to get a 56k modem adapter to play our games yea!!

yes, bad news all around that theyre working to improve an online system people have been complaining about.

And where is your evidence that they're working to improve it, or change it? Gamespy IS the system that they use on the DS: people don't seem to be getting that.

so obviously you have no idea how the DS connection works, seeing as you can, connect to people anywhere, anytime, just by setting up a random match.

its really not difficult.

and in fact, the wii FC can easily function in the exact same way as XBL gamertags, and this announcement certainly lends to that theory,   so, whats the problem?

did you even read the article?   "GameSpy has developed middleware technology to enable Wii titles to offer community features, such as friend rosters, advanced matchmaking capabilities and comprehensive rankings data."

we had minimal matchmaking capabilities, and hardly comprehensive ranking data.   this is an improvement.  hell, the move to console FCs was a big enough improvement for me

The DS has actually been using the GameSpy service that the Wii will use.

It does? Where does it say that, in the press release? The things it says it will offer are things that are 'supposedly' offered in the DS version (of the same tools), only in a fashion no one really wants to use. Don't get me wrong: I desperately hope that Nintendo implements a real online solution, something even remotely akin to Live. But people are very much jumping the gun here, as there's no real evidence that this is anything but the same.

no, I know all too well, that they developed the DS system.
well if thats the argument youre going to use, then..   where is your evidence that it will be the same?

taht argument is pointless,  the way I read the release it indicated that there are improvements in the works,  and like I said, the fact that we have console FCs (even though pokemon MAY be using game specific FCs) is a step in the right direction.   I think people just want to b*tch about something.... and this is there.

ps problems with pokemon Fcs may stem from the DS connectivity, and the individual FCs you need to play on the ds..  just a thought

That's the way you want to read it. That doesn't have to be what it means though. We have system friend codes, but we have no indication whatsoever that they're going to actually use those for anything but Miis and email. We have *more* evidence that they won't use them for software (i.e. Pokeman). The press release doesn't have anything in there that screams improvement. "Comphrensive rankings data"? The Gamespy DS system has rankings data. Their idea of 'comprehensive' can certainly be different than ours. Friend rosters? The DS has those too, just on a game by game basis. There's nothing in there that the DS system doesn't already do, albeit badly. And please. "Where is your evidence that it will be the same" is a silly strawman. If there is a status quo, you need evidence that the status quo will change, not that the status quo will remain the same. That's why it's the status quo. They have a system. A not very good one, that few people like. They hire the same company to make an online system that developed the previous system. They send out a press release that says pretty much the exact same things as the press release that came out years ago for the previous system. Excuse me if I take the safe route and wait for some other evidence that they're making drastic changes. People "want to 'b*tch'" because they don't like the current implementation of the online system. That's perfectly acceptable, because it's not a very good implementation. The flip side seems more likely to be true: people want to blindly believe this will be different, because they want it to be different. That's not a real argument, and it's not a solid basis for thinking it *will* be any different. We haven't really seen much to convince a rational person that Nintendo knows what they're doing in the online space, and is committed to a seamless, user friendly experience. They haven't done it yet. I very much want to believe they will, but I'm still waiting for any evidence that is the case.

Why'd my post disapear? I said Gamespy ruined Starwars Battlefront online. I don't care about the DS, it's online system is fine. But I just can't see this being good news at all for Wii...

Knowing Nintendo I am not going to get excited over this. Sounds like they are just expanding on the DS's system.
