Just curious if it would make any difference. I'm wondering if you think the Wii U will have a better scaler than what's in the Wii? Will the hdmi port make any difference on current 480i games?

Generally I keep all my existing systems because for some reason games always look best on my tvs on their original console. I have a Pioneer Kuro so only the best. Would it be recommended to keep the Wii (as usual) or do you think games won't suffer image quality next gen?

The games will probably look more clear...At least I think. Judging by how original Xbox games look better on the 360 than the Wii should do the same. PS1 games also look better when played on PS2.

Nope

The Wii games wont look any different on the WiiU then they do on the Wii

There's no opinion to this statement, there's facts

It's impossible

This, the only thing that can be done is upscaling. Just like how you can plug a PS2 in via a componenet. But it won't look better, the resolution stays the same, the colours stay the same and just about everything else stays the same.

The difference won't be that much I'll say. Maybe they will look like the PS3 HD remakes which is already good.

We will get tons of remakes so nothing to worry about;) Unfortunately original Wii games will still be the same.

No they won't, those games have been remastered in HD. Textures and everything. Putting a normal PS2 game disc into a PS3 doesn't make it HD.

I know it won't make Wii games look better but what I'm asking is will it look worse? Most often games look THEIR BEST on original hardware. It's true PS1 games look excellent on PS2 but I still prefer to use a PS1 on a 480i CRT, for example.

Can I expect the same picture out of the Wii U connected to a 480i CRT? It probably doesn't make sense to some of you because nowaday ppl use hdtvs but I'm thinking that will just make the picture worse, even upscaled next gen. So do you think it'll be 1:1 between Wii and Wii U with current games? If so I'll give my Wii to my niece. It's all speculation but still.

the cable itself wont make a jot of difference really. there is a lot ninty can do to improve the image quality of wii games on the wiiu though. they can add post process AA and upscale the image and such like. as far as i know though ninty have 0 intention of doing that which is a shame if true. the wiiu itself should be up to the job...its just a question of emulator development and how much time ninty is willing to put into it. but just having HDMI wont make a jot of difference.

It will probably look slightly better. It will be the exact same 480p signal but because of the digital HDMI cable versus analog component it should look slightly sharper. The difference won't be very noticeable but will be there. Really you could just experiment by taking a 360 or PS3 change the settings to 480p and check whether it looks better with component or HDMI. That would tell you right there if the digital signal makes any difference. That would have to be the only difference though as the Wii U is hardware backwards compatible. It's the same with Gamecube games on the Wii. Gamecube games look the same so Wii games on the Wii U will look the same or slightly better.

Its not impossible, but very unlikely. At its core it seems to be more of a software issue rather than hardware.

If its running on the wii hardware itself then no, but most likely the WiiU's hardware will support teh older intructions on the Wii's CPU so there is a possibility that Nintendo could do this.Sometimes when u run things a higher spec than intended certain artifacts could appear because some of the rendering algorithms weren't meant to work with larger images.

A good example is in TP where links shadow map resolution is actually dependent on the screen resolution. This isn't a bad thing, but it just shows how these things are interconnected and could potentially cause problems.

Thats the only reason I see that Nintendo would hesitate to do this. They could release a patch, but thats not really worth it financially.

Why exactly would it be impossible? Different cabling does make a difference. Component cables make the Wii look better than composite or S-Video even if you leave the resolution at 480i. Since HDMI is better than component I would imagine it would work the same. I know it won't work any miracles and it wouldn't increase the resolution but the picture could still look a little better.

one casn hope thast due sdoftware emyulation, some re-rendering or post processing may take place, but I think the open source community will go further with the possibilities then nintendo actually will.

analog=digital?

I didn't know that component cables could carry a 14 channel audio signal and supported a much higher color space. Thanks for the info jayson. I learned alot today.

first of all the system itself will have an HDMI output which may make the picture it's self a different resolution and the 3ds make ds games look better so... just because it hasn't been done before doesn't mean it can't be done

Yes they do. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. If you put a thousand hours on the DS you can tell the games are blurry on the 3DS....all of them.

It depends on the game really. Some games are blurry, and some look fine.

They all look worse on the 3DS, just some worse than others. There are a few where you would have to compare them to a DS to see the difference and some games look way worse. It's because the resolution of the 3DS isn't an even multiple of the original DS's so the pixels are stretched badly. If it had doubled the resolution of the original DS than it would look pretty much the same.

Yes the wii U has the HDMI port. I would imagine the wii games will be upscaled slightly. You should check out the 60gb ps3 and see how ps2 games run on it with HDMI connected. That will probably give you your answer.

Nintendo said the games wouldn't be upscaled at all Wii games are running natively on the system and not emulated (as PS2 games partially are). The difference would be in the digital HDMI cable. Even at 480p HDMI has a better picture than component so the games will probably look slight better. Nothing major but probably at least the difference from say hooking up the Wii with an S-video cable instead of a composite. I would assume though that anything emulated would be upscaled though. VC games are already upscaled on the Wii so hopefully they will be upscaled to full 1080p. I'm not sure how they will be handling Wiiware and Gamecube games though, assuming Gamecube games are added to the VC of course.

Completely wrong

There is no difference in component vs HDMI

The Wii's games go to 480p, there is no dofference at all

Any other answer is just spreading misinformation and for that I have to ask why

Mr. IT guy here to break it down for you all.

HDMI allows for 1080p without any audio/video degradation, since it's a digital signal. Colours are clearer and more accurate with HDMI.

Component is an analog signal, so the quality of the image is degraded and is suspetable to noise and line attentuation.

The only way games would look better is through upscaling, which Nintendo I believe has already said that Wii games won't do on the Wii U.

when talking about the wii, he's correct. a picture can only be as good as the source. crap source = crap picture, no matter how good the cable is. if you were to plug an hdmi cable into an NES, does it suddenly become HD?? NO

This is a good question. If it's anything like running a Wii game in 1080p using Dolphin, everything should look smoother on an HDTV, rather than jagged. I swear, some of these Wii games are held back by the Wii's output. Mario Galaxy/2 and Metroid Other M look closer to 360/PS3 games in 1080p.

All i can say is that i got HD cables for my Wii on amazon, they dont make them look HD cause the Wii cant, but it DOES look better than my old cables. The Wii games will probably get better looking but thats it, no extreme resolutions.

Also, who cares really, most Wii games look just awesome, especially with the right TV settings.

Haziqonfire

They said Wii-U won't run games at higher resolutions ala Dolphin. Far different than what upscaling does.

The games will probably look more clear...At least I think. Judging by how original Xbox games look better on the 360 than the Wii should do the same. PS1 games also look better when played on PS2.

Vickman178
I remember playing shenmue 2 on my xbox 360 and it was more crisp and clear through hdmi, however that was comparing it too my standard composite cables (the yellow white and red standard games that ship with all consoles). However if you were going to compare it to someone who has there wii connected to there tv through component or RGB scart then i think they are going to see very little difference
