The Wii is probably not powerful enough to emulate Dreamcast games. Emulation requires a lot of power. I mean even fairly powerful PC's struggle with emulating PS2 and Xbox games even though they are way more powerful then those system. Saturn games would be more realistic, but even those might be a long shot because of the wierd design of the hardware.
Systems that Wii would be able to emulate in my opinion that haven't been done yet are Sony Playstation (though I don't think that would be possible as Sony wouldn't let it), CD-i, 3D0, 32X, and Atari Jaguar. Most of those systems were flops so it doesn't really make sense.
My wish for the Virtual Console is more import games, a switch back to the 3 games a week, and better games overall. I'd also like to be able to run games directly from the SD card and a bit better menu navigation.
With Samba de Amigo, Phantasy Star, Skies of Arcadia, Sonic Adventure, Ikaruga, Crazy Taxi, Snk Vs. Capcom, Evolution 1 and 2, and House of the Dead already playable on a Wii console; is there really that many more DC games to make available for download?
Marvel Vs. Capcom will likely never happen, nor would Power Stone (since Z&W signaled the splitting of the team), Sega can't use the NFL 2k liscence anymore, Sega gave us the Nights sequel we asked for 10 years ago, Chu Chu rocket was realized on the GBA, Bangai-O was remade for the DS, same with Typing of the Dead, Bomberman is coming to Wiiware.
That pretty much leaves Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves, which can be released as a Neo Geo game; Grandia, Shenmune, Shining Force III complete, Panzer Dragoon trilogy, and Dragon Force 1 and 2 (the game not the band...) as anything post VC capable now that fans would pick up.
But it doesn't matter to Nintendo, because in Japan most of these came out in the Sega Ages collections on the PS2! Meaning that while Sega still owns the original IP, Sony owns part of the rehashes, meaning that Sega would have to remake them again to put on Wiiware or would have to ask permission to use the Sony name on a Nintendo brand.
Sony name on a Nintendo game would lead to one thing only, more people asking where Final Fantasy 7 is and why isn't it on Nintendo. Quite frankly, both companies would throw money at SE to fix that problem. You think 2000 calls in a weekend for one cause is bad, Nintendo would have that many a day just asking about FF7.
They could just release a patch that enables the Wii to read Dreamcast discs, but as the above poster says, emulation may be tricky.Raiko101
Is that possibe? Sounds like a good idea

No I do not think it is possible with just a simple patch. The whole drive would need to be re-worked.

yes its possible but with the wii's current hardware it would run like crap

Unless the emulation software is really good, hence GC games. It's good that you know what you're talking about.
[QUOTE="-Oath"][QUOTE="JAB991"]The Wii simply doesn't have the power. Plus, Saturn games need to get on the VC first.webbut
A dreamcast emulator is in the works for the Wii, and its nearly full speed. Just thought you should know.
linky?
Its on a hacking/homebrew website, Im not taking my chances. However, if I can find a better link Ill let you know.

Mabey i am not understanding something but the Wii is more powerful than the Dream Cast Right? So whats the problem about playing the games off a dream cast disk?(If they got the patch to work)

It's just not possible. Posters above have explained why. Just putting a software patch through would not enable the Wii to play Dreamcast games. It's like saying you could patch your PS2 to play computer games. It's not just the software, but the hardware that's different. Different games call on different pieces of hardware to run. The only way it could be done is through software emulation (emulates the hardware of the other system). However, this is a very intensive process, as it's basically "pretending" to be another console, all through software. The Wii is simply not powerful enough to emulate 128-bit hardware. Not to mention the downloads would be too large even with current compressions techniques (this point is moot however, since it wouldn't work in the first place).

The Wii was never designed to read GDU's. Even if you could patch the machine to read and translate Sega-owned data, you would greatly shorten the lifespan of the console each time you forced the laser to emulate the Dreamcast.
It's just SO much easier to take the data from a Dreamcast game and fit it on a Wii disc. There will likely be a hiccup or two to iron out, but the GPU is 3 times as big as dreamcast discs were, so any engines needed to run would have plenty of space to operate on the disc before space became critical.
See Samba de Amigo and House of the Dead as examples. Both games look and sound better, but operate the same as their DC counterpart. Why create an emulator when simply upgrading your game provides so much positive?
Dreamcast games the Wii VC needs is:
Soul Caliber DC
Tony Hawk Pro Skater 2
NFL 2K & 2K1
Test Drive Le Mans
Resident Evil Code: Veronica
Unreal Tournament
Quake 3 Arena
Rayman 2: The Great Escape
Skies of Arcadia
UFC
Sonic Adventure
Dead or Alive 2
Jet Grind Radio
Well there is a list of what I would want as VC from Dreamcast.
The Dreamcast didn't fail you, you failed to dream...
I doubt that we'll ever see this happen in the near future. For one the Wii doesn't have a large enough hard drive and the Wii probably can't handle the graphics of the Dreamcast.

Packt
No, the Sega marketing team failed. They failed themselves, as they would be the ones to profit from better sales of the console.
It was sega fault DreamCast was the future they let it out to early they should have improved it and waited waited for the gamecube sega would still be in the console game if they had not jumped the gun
I agree, I'd like more focus on bringing out classic games, including all of the ones that were exclusive to Japan. The Wii is probably not powerful enough to emulate Dreamcast games. And I would like to see them emulate the Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance - that can be done. If they could find some way to link games together, like enable people who have Pokemon Red, Blue and Yellow to transfer their pokemon over to Pokemon Stadium for example, that would make things all the better.
Maybe if the wii had a hard drive it would have been possible to emulate the dreamcast games (which would result in a huge loss of quality especially for larger tv's). But as of now you have a better chance getting a dreamcast off of ebay or waiting till the next Nintendo system comes out and then maybe it will have the capabilities necessary to play dreamcast titles.
I just bought a dreamcast off of ebay for 25 bucks with 2 controllers and the VMUs because my old dreamcast died, so you're better off checking out ebay for dreamcast.
But if somehow it were ever possible...
Sonic Adventure
Sonic Adventure 2
Power Stone
Power Stone 2
...those would be must buys for me
That pretty much leaves Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves, which can be released as a Neo Geo game; Grandia, Shenmune, Shining Force III complete, Panzer Dragoon trilogy, and Dragon Force 1 and 2 (the game not the band...) as anything post VC capable now that fans would pick up.

I would pay a lot of wii points for that game
Dreamcast games would be impossible for Wii to emulate. The only option would be to port the games and sell them at retail, which they're already doing (House of the Dead 2 = Dreamcast port, Shenmue 1&2 are rumoured to be coming to Wii as well). It wouldn't make sense for Sega to bring out those games at retail if it were possible to put them on VC.
As for Saturn games I doubt they'll happen either. The system was very powerful for its time and was very strange in terms of archetecture and design. It was intended to be a 2D console, but Sega put one of their 3D arcade proccessors into it at the last minute after learning about Sony's plans for the Playstation. Because of this, it was very hard to develop for and is also very hard to emulate. It'd be far too time consuming for Sega to get the emulation running smoothly on a machine with as limited power as Wii.
Well, with how cheaply one can find a Dreamcast in almost new condition and the low price of games for said system... why not just go and buy a Dreamcast? Play the games on the system they were made for. I still have my Dreamcast plugged in right next to my Wii and OS Xbox and it still gets playing time.
We need third party developers working on decent games for the Wii, not wasting even more time rehashing even more stuff that has already been done last generation.
