What exactly does WiiConnect24 do?

Supposedly, it prefetches updates but when I connect to the news, weather, (or worst of all) the shop channel, I suffer horrible load times. I thought all the info was fetched when my Wii was "connected" to the updates while idle? The only thing that comes to mind is friend messages but I'd rather use AIM or MSN for all of that. An ideal WiiConnect24 would be instant access to weather and news and minimal load times for the shop channel. Nintendo needs to get it's act together with this "Always connected" system because for now, I feel sorely disconnected.

My load time for the Shop Channel is extremely fast I don't know why people say it's long.

Probably because their wireless network is not configured right. You can just plug in a wireless router and not check the settings. Most of them have built in Firewalls which can slow down your experience. You have to circumvent them sometime by allowing certain ports complete open access. My Wii connect is super fast too.

I'm just mad that it takes so long just to load the Wii Shop Channel... or worse yet it takes two to three tries just for it to not give me an error message.

I've heard alot of complaints about the WiiConnect24 system, and I'll agree, it does feel gimmicky and tacked on. But keep in mind, the Wii is only 4 months old, and this is Nintendo's first (serious) attempt at an online experience. Given a few months, or maybe as long as a year, knowing Nintendo, the WiiConnect24 system will evolve and become a major part of the Wii experience. I got my Wii five days after launch, and the online system has already come a long way. I expect the system to evolve by leaps and bounds once online games start to make their way into the market. Sorry for the rant, but that's my 2 cents. Or maybe that's a dime. Oh well.

I think it has decent loading times. Maybe your connection sucks. Anyway I'm not really complaining about these channels, I just want online games.

It's not supposed to always have you connected to the shop channel or forecast and news channels. All it's supposed to do is update your systems firmware and check for updates. Find me one link where Nintendo said it was supposed to always supposed to be connected to the channels. You make assumptions but they never said anything like that. Go ahead find one.

I had problems with the shop channel when I first got my Wii. The fix was changing the wireless channel to either 1 or 11. If that's not the case, it is more or less your Wii's wireless connection. And it stays pretty connected when it comes to the weather channel. More features of WiiConnect24 are sure to come in the future when Nintendo and GameSpy finish up their networks for online capabilities.

WiiConnect24 is pretty useless right now. Not at all like Nintendo advertised. What I don't like is that if you turn it off half of the channels don't work.

I wonder how many people actually look in the owner's manual to troubleshoot their connection problems before crying about how crappy the shop channel works on forums.

Anyways, I can get right into the weather and news with no loading times at all, and the time for the shop channel is very minimal.

WiiConnect doesnt do anything. It only allows you to receive messages while the Wii is off. Thats it.
