But if they release it next year and you wait until 2012 or 2013 to buy one, you'll be able to buy the 3DS after it gets a price drop (or two) and have a whole host of already released games to pick and choose from at discounted prices. I know that's what I plan on doing (it's what I did with the DS, as the early years of the DS were pretty darn awful). One thing I hate about Nintendo is how fast they release stuff. In my opinion, the 3DS shouldn't be released so early, even though I'm not getting one. It should be released by like 2012 or 2013.

I'll will probably wait for about a year before I get one.godfather_1The early DS was ugly as **bleep**. Sadly, I bought one just before the Lite was announced, although I suppose it was sturdier than the Lite, if nothing else. The biggest problem with the DS was the lack of games, GBA ports, and weird games that used the touchscreen for stupid things like a steering wheel or map or whatever. Even Nintendo was doing embarassing things, like their awful port of Super Mario 64 with the silly thumb strap.
[QUOTE="DJ_Lae"][QUOTE="RichardWrite"]They will eventually discontinue the Wii in favour of the next console, though. And the 3DS will likely have every feature the DS currently has, so Nintendo won't be losing any of their audience - they'll just be selling them new, more expensive hardware. Let me give you another example. Amazon would never turn the Kindle into a handheld gaming system and start promoting it primarily as a gaming device? But why not? It would still do what it always did.......Serving as an e-book reader. So why not change it to a game system and promote it as such? BECAUSE PERCEPTION IS EVERYTHING. And the avid book readers would perceive that Amazon had sold out and started making games instead of readers. The 3DS will be marketed as this super-cool toy with high-end futuristic graphics. It will not be perceived as something that welcomes the older gamers. Worse yet, I suspect the 3DS is going to be a colossal failure. For Nintendo to stop making the only handheld that appeals to older gamers would make as much sense for them to cancel the Wii in favor of an X-Box clone. They simply will not surrender those customers.

Oh dear you really think Nintendo is going to market it as "super high realistic graphics"? Have you been paying attention?
Its "roughly as powerful" as the GameCube. If they marketed it as that they'd give it 512MB RAM, and 1Ghz Snapdragon or Intel Atom for that matter!
Kindle is a terrible example. And of course the 3DS is going to be a huge success. Colossal Failure? Not likely.
Infact, the rumors of an Animal Crossing at launch already indicate they're readying to market to casuals with the 3DS, and i bet there is more brain age, nintendogs, etc software then core software, coz thats the right way to build an initial consumer base for a platform
Really? You really think after all this nintendo is gonna market it as high end device? Wow. If its a GameCube then its really not that distiguishable from a PSP in graphics to most consumers (i'm not saying one or the other makes better visuals but i'm saying the general non-core consumer won't notice the difference) therefore it can't be marketed as HIGH END.

No, I mean why release it so soon? DSi/XL hasn't even been released for 2 years yet. Why release it so early?HungryLumaiPod Touch/iPhone. They need something to compete with that, and judging by their DSiWare (or lack of) they realize what they put together in the DSi was woefully inadequate. Apple's already taken a huge chunk out of Sony's handheld market share, and while Nintendo hasn't suffered any yet in terms of sales, DS growth didn't increase much in the past year as it did before. They need something new. I think in ten years the DSi/XL will be viewed as a failure of sorts, given how little Nintendo will have supported them.

As I noted elsewhere, we know for a fact that new DS games will still be coming out through most of 2011. Just have fun with the DSi until then, and then maybe a decent number of 3DS specific titles will be out.One thing I hate about Nintendo is how fast they release stuff.
