Exactly. While Gerstmann was here (in '06 especially), note that Gears of War and Elder Scrolls both got insanely high scores. Enlighten me: does anyone here still play Gears of War? I didn't think so, because if you love multiplayer, you're probably playing COD4 or SSBB. And from even the most devout lovers of Gears of War, everyone says it has an insanely short campaign.
And while I don't think Twilight Princess deserved a 10, it certainly earned a 9.0-9.5. Amazing game, but not perfect by a long shot. Metroid Prime 3 is another one that was underrated way, way too much by Gamespot. 8.5? Are you kidding? Maybe 9.5... While they gave No More Heroes a 9.0. And it had tons of blood... Maybe they add .5 to a score for blood.
By the new standards for a 10, Galaxy earned a 10 though. I couldn't find a flaw, and I went searching. The controller complaint is funny. If they can do better, I'd like them to prove it. No, I'd REALLY like them to prove it. The gravity set up in Galaxy more than made up for the fact the controls invert when you go upside down, which makes sense anyway. I agree with their Brawl review though. Great graphics, great music, great multiplayer, but as much of an improvement as Subspace Emissary was, single player still needs a lot of work.
Hopefully they've lightened up, because a lot of people set store on the reviews on sites like this. They can be critical, but they can't be biased. That's not fair to anyone. And I'm not biased. I haven't played GTA IV or MGS 4, and they may well deserve there 10's. But then they give Galaxy, Prime 3 and Twilight Princess all scores lower than they earned? Those were seriously some of the best works I've ever seen from Nintendo. I've been with the big N since the N64 years, btw. Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Metroid Prime 1, Wind Waker, and RE4 are the others up there. Not that they all deserve 10's, but that's an example imo.
Maybe they have lightened up. After all, they gave Galaxy Game of the Year. I think they're starting to collaborate with IGN, those scores are starting to be very similar. Together, those two would probably have a balanced, fair, objective opinion, if they aren't doing that yet.
So in other words, I think Gamespot's figuring things out, as is IGN, and they will, at some point, give a 10 to a Nintendo game. If they make another Mario for Wii (they should, but there was only one for N64 and the Cube), or with the next Zelda, Nintendo could get a 10. Conduit would have to do a lot better than I'm predicting to get a 10, but at least they're being serious about it. Fatal Frame has that chance, as do Spore and Sadness, but who knows. And more importantly, who cares? I agree with the sig I saw somewhere: when Gamespot gives a review, a puppy dies. I don't listen to Gamespot a whole lot when I'm looking for games.
