Well they don't sound good in the first place so I've no idea why they would. :P Seriously though, they sound reasonable as non audiophile headphones but you could do much better with your money than the Beats range. Very overpriced headphones.

Any headphones will sound as they should through the gamepad. The Wii U gamepad really blew me away with how good it can transfer a wireless signal from the unit.

Usually when you have wireless sound devices that transmit through infared or radio frequency there is a ton of hiss, click, pops and crackles. White noise that would drive a sound geek like me crazy.

Whatever technology Nintendo is using it seems to be working great, in fact the sound is perfect. I use Astro A40s headset and they plug right in. What I'm curious about is the icon where you plug in the headphone doesn't show a mic. I wonder if the gamepad can take a three ring TRS input for both audio and mic. Unfortunately I don't own any multiplayer games on the Wii U yet to be able to test this. Maybe someone else can share.

well I'm not saying it doesn't... I just don't have a multiplayer game to try like COD or Tekken. I am thinking it has to right...? Cause how else would they do voice chat? They already said the onboard mic won't be used for chat, just video chat.

Beats aren't worth the money. I'm an audio engineering major, and one of my professors has kicked someone out of a class for walking in with Beats on. They produce a bassy wall of sound not worth a quarter of the price tag. No one with an ear should ever listen to music or anything on Beats even if they were $50 headphones, but they're far more than that. I'm not saying this to be mean or scathing, I just want you to save your money. They're overpriced headphones, even on sale, with extremely low-quality drivers for the price and tasteless (even offensive) EQ coloring.

That just made my day, I'm not one to know too much about audio, but always thought Beats headphones were very overpriced for the sound they make.

Beats don't sound good on anything. Get proper headphones from Sennhesier, Audio-Technica, AKG or any other good company.

Thanks for the replys everyone. I asked about the headphone sound quality because I have some half decent headphones already and when I use them for my 3ds its very quiet even at full volume but when used in my phone they are 3x louder.

Headphones preference are a very subjective. What sounds good to one person doesn't sound good to another. The reason for the different sound is that each headphone will put a certain EQ curve on top of the source that has already been EQ'd. It's all about what sounds good to you.

Now I happen to like headphones that don't add much EQ and the sound can be heard for what it is. Some people find them less bassy or thin but I say it's true and clear. I would recommend the tried and true Sony MDR-V6. Read about them, they are great... and at $67 they're a steal.

If you are not an audiophile of any kind (ie you don't know/care about audio bitrate - like most people) I recommend these: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10850&cs_id=1080910&p_id=9770&seq=1&format=2 I bought a pair of headphones from them and they sound a ton better than the $100 skullcandy's I wasted my money on. Plus they are super cheap.

There is a simple solution for those with with a nice headset with separate mic & sound plugs: an adapter cable. Just search for "Headset Buddy" on Amazon.

As far as "nice" headphones for the Wii U; since there is no optical audio out, this will affect everyone with a nice 7.1 headset (Astro A40 useless). The only way to "easily" use a headset with this system is through the gamepad. Unless you have your Wii U routed through a nice AV receiver, I don't think there is an easy way for people to get surround sound in their headsets. Perhaps 3rd parties will come up with a solution, but it won't be cheap.

not sure what the beats cost....but i am sure they are not cheap...i love my AKG 702's for gaming...crazy good sound stage... some something a little mroe reasonable priced i would suggest http://www.amazon.com/Technica-ATH-AD700-Open-air-Audiophile-Headphones/dp/B000CMS0XU/ref=sr_1_67?ie=UTF8&qid=1353615149&sr=8-67&keywords=headphones run away from Astro, Turtle beach, razer all the so called gaming sets...get a decent set from a known audio grade manafacturer. the AD700's will do 75% of what my AKG's can do imo...nice set for $100...
