To my knowledge I have yet to post in here and if there is already a thread on this I am sorry...I do not look further than the first page lol.

But I was wondering what everyones "best" of the year albums are so far? Mainly because I need to find some **** to jam too. There has only been a small handful that ive got this year and really enjoyed.

Strong Arm steady - In Search of Stoney Jackson

&

The Roots - How I got over.

Leftback, Distant Relatives and the new Reflection Eternal all fell short for me, which sucked :(

Sir Lucious Leftfoot, Marcberg, and Pilot Talk are probably my top 3. I've been bumping Black Milk's album a lot recently, and enjoying it, so I'll see after I let it settle in some more. It may be up there.

We usually have a Top Albums/Songs/Mixtapes Voting thread at the end of the year, and that'll be going up in a few months.

Big Boi - Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty
Nas & Damian Marley - Distant Relatives

Those are my runaway favorite albums this year. Black Milk, J.Cole, Skyzoo, and Kanye are the only artists that I see having a shot at passing either of those albums. Any other albums upcoming I'm either not anticipating as much or simply forgot about.

Thank Me Later, Suite 420, and Teflon Don deserve mention for being enjoyable though. And I'm surprised at how quickly RPM and How I Got Over got played out for me.

My point is, mixtapes and albums is a distinction without a difference. Especially from the listener's perspective . . .

in my opinion, albums and mixtapes are like squares and rectangles. a mixtape is an album, but an album isn't a mixtape. not sure if that makes sense.

Really though.

A couple years ago there was a much bigger divide between albums and mixtapes. Mixtapes were sloppier, unrefined, unmixed, over someone else's year old beats... but now more and more mixtapes are over original beats and more album-like. Mixtapes like Kush and OJ and Big K.R.I.T. Wuz Here are basically albums. There's still a divide since so many rappers' mixtapes are still sloppy and recorded at less than studio quality but the gap is closing.

As mixtapes continue to improve (in recording quality, refinement, etc) and become more album-like, I think it'll only be a matter of time before more rappers just start calling their "free mixtapes" as "free albums." It's not there yet but I could see it happening.

Maybe we'll even reach an age down the line where all music is free and that artists make their money in other ways. Jay-Z could release his new album for free download and sell advertising on that website (with an option to purchase a physical copy too I guess).

^^^ Word. The music industry has a bad business model that fails to adapt to the reality of piracy. Instead of stifling innovation, the industry needs to move in a direction where people can get more product and artists can still get revenue. The method you laid out is a great example of how the industry should move forward.

It would be interesting for there to be a day where artists release their musack for free and make their income doing different things. Only thing is when you have artists without an education (actually scratch that, because Jay and Diddy don't have a degree) when you have artists who who aren't open-minded when it comes to expanding yourself in different ways of making money they find themselves stuck in music only and thinking like Waka Flaka;not using lyrics because it doesn't make money. I think the lack of creativity and imagination keeps them from getting to the point that Orlando mentioned.

I was just typing up a big thread about Travis Porter but then I realized that pretty much all their good songs aren't on Youtube, and there didn't seem to be much of a point of making a thread if I couldn't provide the audio.

Anyways, "Differenter Gang" and "Proud to Be a Problem" are two of my favorite releases so far this year ... "Hotel" is easily one of my most played tracks this year, "Be Free" could easily be a Billboard-crushing hit, and there is just a ridiculous amount of good music floating around those two mixtapes.

Nice to see people still getting behind Black C's "70's Baby" ... I still really cant decide between that and J Dawg's "Behind Tint Vol 2" for AOTY. And, as I've said before, "Livewire Radio Vol 3" far out-ranks both of them as my most-played album of the year.

Other albums I'd say recently entered my AOTY contention would be the Nas & Damine Marley album, and the 8Ball & MJG record.

It took a loooooooooong-*** time, but 2010 is finally really starting to shape up. But I think the best is yet to come ... I sense a lot of great records coming out in about the next two months ... everything from Telly Mac to San Quinn to Stevie Joe to that new "Devilz Rejects" (which I really would not be surrpised if that ends up as AOTY); there's a lot of time for 2010 to go from "good" year in rap to "great".

Yeah, it's called "10 Toes Down", and it's fantastic. I'd say possibly the best thing Koch has put out since the first Boss Hogg Outlawz record. That record they put out on Bad Boy a couple years ago got a lot of hype but the album basically sucked ... this album owns. It's not them at the peak of their career, but it's still damn good.

The album was released as a joint venture between TI's Grand Hustle and Koch. In addition to that, the album was executive produced by Drumma Boy. That means, not only did Drumma do a hanfull of the albums' beats, but he oversaw guided the album's overall vision, which is evident in the fact that most of the non-Drumma-produced tracks sound like they could've been made by him.

Now, if you thought Drumma's production on TI's "Paper Trail" was good, then you should go listen to Drumma's mixtape "Welcome to My City". Then after that, you should listen to this record, because he has some insanely good production on here.

Ball's lyrcs are a mixed bag; they range from awful to excellent. MJG is pretty consisten throughout.

More than anything, you need to hear "Right Now", with some amazing production by Mo B Dick (yes, that Mo B Dick, of No Limit fame). The only real downsides to the album would be track 2, with an awful Nitti beat, and a track has a verse with Soulja Boy, for some reason.
